One killed as army foils infiltration bid in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 18 (IANS): A junior commissioned officer (JCO) was killed and a soldier was injured when army soldiers foiled an infiltration bid in north Kashmir's Kupwara district early Saturday, an official said.

A gunfight erupted between a group of four-five militants and security forces when the soldiers detected the infiltration bid in Machil area, an army spokesperson said.

"The militants opened fire resulting in the death of a JCO and injuries to another trooper," the spokesperson added. The injured soldier was rushed to hospital for treatment.

"Searches are continuing in the area. We have recovered a huge quantity of ammunition," he added.
