Mangalore, May 18: The Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy presented its Honorary Awards for the years 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 in a glittering function held at Town Hall here on Saturday May 18.

The awards were conferred on Ismail Musliyar Nekkiladi Maddani (Beary language), Mohammad Baddoor (Beary literature), Dr B K Yusuf (Beary culture), Basheer Baikampady (Beary art), Mohammad Chikmagalore (culture) Abdul Razak Harekala (Beary literary education), Abdul Khader Haji  Golthamajal (organizer), Charmadi Hasanabba (social service), Zakariya Venoor (theatre), B M Mumthaz Ali (social service) and Dr Kaup Mohammed (education).

The programme was inaugurated by Kasargod Chinna, president of Konkani Sahitya Academy.

Addressing the gathering, he said, "Our mother tongue is the root of our culture. When our language is strengthened, our culture also develops. Today, Beary language is facing a challenge in that there are not enough writers coming up in the field of Beary literature. We can only find a few limited writers. If this continues, people may lose interest in literature, and hence Beary Sahitya Academy should take this as a challenge and organize training camps to educate people about the language and its literature. When a person respects the soil of his homeland he will defintely love his culture and language."

After conferring the awards, Ganesh Rao, founder, Karavali Educational Institutions in his address said, "If the society improves then its literature too will surely improve. Ten years ago the Beary community was backward in terms of education but in the present scenario it is embracing education and moving to the mainstream."

He added, "The community leaders have a major role to play, they should contribute towards providing good education to the community children instead of fulfilling their mundane needs. The Beary Academy has the responsibility to develop the language holistically."

Prior to the programme, a procession was flagged off from the University College, Hampankatta, which passed through State Bank and culminated at Town Hall. The processions was flanked by Kolkali, Oppan, Duff, Thalim, Cheeni band and attractive Beary folk teams.
