Big thumbs down for Manmohan, UPA if polls held now: Survey

Kolkata, May 20 (IANS): The Congress-led UPA 2, which will complete four years in office Wednesday, would fare badly if general elections were to be held now, with inflation, unbridled corruption and economic decline playing a major role, said a survey.

The ABP Ananda- Nielsen survey conducted across 21 states and union territories says the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) would suffer badly in several states of the country including West Bengal, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led led National Democratic Alliance would gain.

According to the survey, the UPA's kitty would come down to just 136 from the current 262 while the NDA's share would swell to 206 from the current 158.

People have also given a thumbs down to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with only 7 percent of them wanting see him in the top post for the third time.

BJP leader and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is the "favourite" with as many as 48 percent of the surveyed wanting him to be the prime minister. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi comes a distant second with 18 percent.

In West Bengal, the Congress would get nine Lok Sabha seats and the Trinamool 14 in case the former allies contested independently with the Left Front getting 18 seats.

However, in case of a Congress-Trinamool alliance, they would bag 24 seats with the Left getting 17.

In Uttar Pradesh, Congress's kitty would come down to six from the current 21 while the ruling Samajwadi Party would be the leaders with 24 seats. The biggest gainer though would be the BJP which will see its seat count swell to 23 from the current 10.

The scenario in Maharastra would also be similar with the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party coalition's share coming down to 16 seats from the 25 they now have.

In Bihar, the ruling BJP and Nitish Kumar led Janata Dal United alliance would continue to be the leaders with 34 seats while the Congress would manage just three seats.

The survey also says the "charisma" of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit who was voted to power third time in arrow would not work this time.

This survey is not true it speaks of NaMo becoming the PM and BJP getting back to power earlier too they had predicted same thing during Delhiu Assembly election that BJP will come into power but unfortunately(?) Congress was back to power with overwhelming majority.
Congress maynot get absolute majority but will be the single largest party. MMS may not be the PM but congress has already decided to field "Mr Clean Antony" for the post.

Another question that arises here is why survey is quiet about the formation of 3rd front and also that of Mr Nitish Kumar becoming the PM.

Therefore this is nothing but the political Gimic played by the BJP.....

If polls are held now UPA may get this much. But if Polls are held after one year as scheduled then they may get still lesser.
Anyway, Cong will fare very badly in Andhra Pradesh inspite of having Star Chiranjeevi on their side.
Thumbs Up to Surveyors for being candid.

The people who hates corruption is Karnataka when BJP was in power now supporting Congress for the same reason. That means, nobody wants to eradicate corruption. They are fighting for the parties. If we, voters do like this, then how can we expect India as a Developed country? We thrown out BJP from Karnataka because of corruption. But some of our beloved commentators still want corrupt UPA in central. They want only Congress, though it is corrupt!!!

During the previous General elections it was said that NDA would come to power by various surveys. But to everyones surprise UPA came to power. Not a single survey was proved right in the previous general election.

Same story will repeat this year.Congress needs just two months time to turn the table and is already planning strategy inside closed doors. It will come out with a most powerful weapon to counter the challenge of the BJP walas.Forget ruling, BJP will not even get a chance to sit in opposition in next general election.Mr Man Mohan Singh will be the PM for the third term and will creat history.

Dear Vivek, First of let’s take a look at numbers, Modi can become PM only if BJP on its own wins at least 200 seats(like Congress 206 seats 2009 election) without any NDA allies. This is because larger the NDA, tougher for Modi to become acceptable candidate. Nitish has opposed and it is quite possible couple of others like Biju,(sena already told about Susma) and akali doubtful about Modi, and these are big regional parties. Given the reality, BJP will rely heavily on regional groupings. Ground reality does not favor BJP so much to give it 200 on its own: it has no presence in the South (in Karnataka, it has finished) it is not going strong in big states, it has presence only in Rajasthan, MP and Gujarath. It has less presence in larger states like UP, Bihar, Orissa, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and so on. Moreover, Ram temple issue already close chapter (bcz people understand now they cannot build). I see UPA comes back to power in around 2014-15 with most probably Rahul as the PM. Whether we like it or not, this is how it looks more realistic. So if people want Modi as PM, people must give BJP 200 seats on its own – tell me be frank is it possible? Then why so much of hypes of Modi to PM? Sorry Modi…just wake up dear…its only dream…….

Vivek, in 2004 the predictions and surveys said that the NDA would come back on the shining India platform. In 2009 the surveys predicted that the UPA would be thrown out and in the recent Karnataka elections it was predicted that the Congress would get around 80-90 seats. So don't hatch your eggs yet. The congress has never won opinion polls but it always wins in real elections.
