Doha: Fresh talents galore at MCC annual competitions

Media Release

Doha, May 20: The much-awaited annual Talent Contest organized by the Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC), Qatar were held on Friday, May 17 at the Ashoka Hall of the Indian Cultural Center. It is the eighth time that MCC is organizing this talent contest which is open to all Konkani speaking Mangaloreans in Qatar.

The evening began with a prayer by Joint Cultural Secretary Prabha Rego followed by a welcome note from President Sunil D'Silva. The programme was anchored by Emelia and Harry Correa who welcomed the judges Joyce Mascarenhas, Celia D'Souza, Richard D'Souza and Anthony Peter D'Souza.

The talent competitions kicked off with the fancy dress and were followed by dance and singing competitions. Fancy dress was conducted for little children upto 6 years with the theme being different occupations and it was a delight to see little children with their presentations.

In the solo category of the dance competition there was no language bar but the group categories had to mandatorily perform to Konkani songs. The songs were peppy and the costumes were a treat to the eyes both from kids as well as adults. The choreography of the dances was superb, truly the end result was a testimony of the dedication and the number of hours of practice put in by the performers.

This was followed by the singing competition wherein only Konkani language songs were permitted. It was a treat to the ears when little children were singing so fluently the Konkani songs in their solo performances.

As a token of appreciation the president honoured all the judges with a memento. Judges shared their thoughts and gave some good tips and suggestions to the participants and expressed their joy in judging the beautiful talents. They congratulated all the participants for their spirit and shared an encouraging thought 'All quitters are not winners and all winners are not quitters'. Praises poured in from the judges and the audience for three-year-old girl Suzanne Fernandes who stole the show in the group dance performance.

Committee members Ephrem D'sa, John Britto and Ronald Saldanha manned the registration desk, while Dephny Lobo and Winnie Saldanha were the official timers. William Thoras and Sabinash D'Souza provided sound support and Ryan Renjar provided the backstage support. Winnie Saldanha proposed the vote of thanks. Cultural secretary Riana Pinto thanked all the participants and announced the results. President Sunil D'Silva and general secretary Prakash Noronha handed out the participation certificates.
