Kundapur: Newspaper lady works without leave for 13 years!

Silvester D'Souza
Daijiworld Media Network – Kundapur (SP)

Kundapur, May 21: We keep hearing about achievements of people who do something great. At the same time, there are many, who remain behind the scenes and record achievements in their own way, without getting any recognition.

Shakuntala from Ombattu Dandige in the town is one such unassuming achiever. Every individual who has stayed in the town for at least a few days comes to know of her.

Shakuntala has been working in a well-established newspaper agency located in the old bus stand area. During the 13 years she has been working here, Shakuntala has not taken even a day off. In spite of studying up to only the eighth standard, Shakuntala has achieved expertise in neatly arranging the newspapers and other publications in the shop, and also in identifying the needs of the customers and catering to their needs.

Shakuntala, at the time of arranging these newspapers, also reads them. So, she has in-depth knowledge in almost all the subjects. She has not only adopted the job as a way of living, but also utilized the opportunity to grow tremendously in terms of knowledge.

Shakuntala’s work starts at 3.30 am. She walks 30 minutes to her shop, and opens it exactly at 4 am. She then arranges about 800 newspapers that are received at the shop by 4.30 am, and packs them for being sent to Hosanagar, Siddapur, Hosangady, Gangolli, and other rural areas around the town by bus. She also provides service with a smile to customers who approach the shop.

Shakuntala has been working tirelessly to brighten up the lives of her three younger sisters and live comfortably with their mother.

Shakuntala, who visits Lord Eshwara temple every Monday without fail, attends the annual Kalavar Shashti. Other than that, she finds God in her work, and perhaps on account of blissful life she leads there, she has never found the compulsion to take leave even for a single day in the last 13 years!

Congratulation dear Shakuntala for your hard dedicated work without break for 13 long years. I do not know from where you got such a stamina for your punctuality. Silvester D'Souza and Daijiworld media did a fantastic job by publishing such an article. Also the pictures were inspiring. We visit India/Udupi/Kundapur/Mangalore/Mumbai every year and even though we are from New York. This visit in October this year we will definitely visit Shakuntala. We have been inspired by this article. God knows how many must be like Shakuntala. God bless her, her family and her work.

    I agree with your comments.

No doubt she is a very hardworking and dedicated woman. She desrves many more compliments. In the mean time life throughout is not only meant to work hard. We need rest, proper brake also to enjoy life. If she uses her life like this when she will relax. After becoming 60.

    Right word...
    She is "workaholic" !

My bow to this unsung/hardworking hero. I can relate to her because I too like to be punctual in what I do. I cannot understand the concept of taking time off for silly reasons and give excuses of sickness. Shakuntala loves what she does so she does not feel the necessity to take time off. Wish all of us learn a lesson from her. I will keep praying for her good health so she can set a world record of "Shakuntala retired without taking a day off work". I love her calm demeanor. No wonder she serves the customers with a smile. God bless!!

Shakuntala is a honest lady. The owner has trusted the whole shop on her.She worked for 13 years she may be very well acquainted with her job.She is the best candidate for business. If someone helps her financially to start her own paper business,no doubt she will be the winner.Instead of someone else enjoying her hard work, she can enjoy herself.

    This is called foolishness.

Human Body is similar to a machine which needs periodic servicing in the form of breaks from your usual stuff and doing things which broadens the mind like family visits, parties, touring, etc

Donkeys work without breaks , humans need to divert away from the usual monotonous work once in a while to relax the mind.

I appreciate Shakuntala's dedication towards her job and her courage to create her own identity, in a society which suppresses the girl child.

However i am not in support of her nonstop 13 years journey.

Human beings are social creatures and life without socializing is meaningless.

It depends on the circumstances in which she is in, where she has to provide for her family.

Some people dont have a urge for socialising, Which I consider as a Blessing, yet she is committed to her work, family, customers and relate herself to God.

Those who are disagreeing for the comments here - they are all from Kundapur. They know this lady is meticulous and when they did wrong or were lethargic in their work, she had solded them or made them do the work again. They have that hatred...
