Mangalore, May 21: Newly appointed forest minister and Bantwal MLA Ramanath Rai arrived in the city here on Tuesday May 21 to a warm welcome by his well-wishers, supporters and Congress partyworkers.

He was welcomed at Mangalore International Aiport where he arrived by the morning flight from Bangalore, after being sworn-in as minister in the Siddaramaiah cabinet. A music band and a vehicle decorated in his honour were part of the celebrations.

Speaking to mediapersons, Rai said that forest ministry is a very important one in the cabinet. "Eco balance can be maintained if the forest area is preserved. Hence preservation and conservation of forests is my top priority," he said.

"I will strive hard to be a prompt and trustworthy leader, and make our department the best in the coming days," he promised.

"I thank CM Siddaramaiah and Congress high command for making me a minister in the state cabinet. I will remain loyal to the party and do my best to fulfil the expectations of the party and the people. I will call for a meeting with the officials of the forest department and gather all information, and take steps for further development at the earliest," he added.

A large number people thronged the airport to welcome their leader.

MLA Moideen Bava, Praveenchandra Alva, Bhaskar Moily, Mohan Mendon, T K Sudhir, Ivan D’Souza, Ashraf, Shashidar Hegde, Ashith Pereira, Milaz Attavar and others were present.

Mangalore, May 21: Addressing a press meet in the district for the first time after being sworn in as minister of forest, environment, and ecology in Siddaramaiah’s cabinet, B Ramanath Rai said, “I gladly accept this responsibility. Globally there is a discussion going on about the preservation and conservation of forests to maintain the ecological balance. Many rivers take birth from the Western Ghats and it is our duty to protect nature. The department will concentrate on protection, conservation, and provide a pollution-free environment. This department will provide an eco-friendly and pro-people administration.”

Rai also said that the chief minster is contemplating about this department. “Legitimately, he has chosen me and given me responsibility hence I will provide clean, transparent, and corruption free administration,” he added.

When media persons bombarded him with issues of Kudremukh, Niddodi, low conviction rate of violating the wildlife protection law, and the problem of relocation of tribes from the reserve forest, Rai said, “I have recently taken responsibility as forest minister and I will surely discuss about the prevailing problems in the department with the authorized officials and resolve it.”

Rai also said that there are four ministers in the undivided Dakshina Kannada-Udupi district. “Hence, we will surely concentrate on the development of the district. On the issues of CRZ, we will talk with the Government of India and play a further role,” he added.

“My mission and prominence is to give eco-friendly, corruption-free, and transparent administration. I will concentrate on afforestation and conservation. I plan to organize ‘Laksha Vruksha Abhiyana’ in the future,” said Rai.

He also said that he will not continue as district president.

MLA Mohiuddin Bava and Shashidar Hegde were also present on this occasion.

Congratulations sir,its a pleasure to have you as the forest minister.conservation of wildlife was least concerned by the ministers till now which had to be a very important matter. please try to wash out the illegal hunting and deforestation carried out in most of our region. try to appoint staffs to spread the awareness about the importance of conservation of forests. appoint more forest officials, try to modernize the technology and the equipment used by the officials. The last hope for our national animal 'TIGER' is India, and in India the maximum hope is in Karnataka which is a big issue worldwide,we are very lucky to have so many endemic species of flora and fauna in the western ghats and the rain forests which has to be protected at any cost. take strict action on those violating wildlife laws either they are rich or poor. let us conserve our nature for the future generation too.

    Ismail,

I am not targetting Rai or any individual. The issue is that CM held the meeting with officials last week about water scarcity, but no outcome from it. CM is busy with visiting Matha, Mandira and election campaign. BWSSB also comes under govt. BBMP can look into the issue if there is some leakage or breakdown in the pipeline.

    Nadeem Khan Bangalore,

I deliberately not pin point BBMP because I had some reasons not to mention.Drinking water supply/maintenance/responsibility comes under BBMP in coordination with the BWSSB. That being said, there are no representation either from concerned authority or BBMP to govt in a serious note but there had a statement from one concerned officer that drinking water shortage would be rectified as water from other canal already started to move to main station of BWSSB.

Coming to your another political issue,'CM visiting Mandir Math'etc it is just a courtesy call and in fact, he is not wasting time or resources in the name of said issue unlike BJP govt did through out it's tenure to fool the voters. This govt headed by Siddu certainly work for the people and state of Karnataka.Water scarcity in the month of MAY- till June first week is a common phenomena across Karnataka.

No problem if he visits Matha, Mandir to take blessings. But what is priority for him? Visiting Matha or solving peoples problems? First of all he is not a religious leader, he is a leader of democracy. In democracy people comes first. He can take the blessings later.

When it comes to society and people, don't support a party, leader blindly. Even I am a congress supporter.

portfolios in newly installed Govt.Due to various political reasons Rai was awarded Forest ministry.Mr Rai has 6th time MLA and senior leader of Congress was short listed CM of Karnataka.Mr Rai challenged RSS openly even before election which is said to be unprecedented and RSS did no stone un turned to clip the wing of RAI turned to be futile exercise. One day Kudalite will become CM of Karnataka for sure.

It is hard to believe that taps did not dry in Bangalore during previous 5 years. Are you serious about it. People were shouting at the Govt. for their apathy for not providing water for days together.
Do you remember BJP Minister promising to provide PURE clean water a plenty. If water was available in every tap why he should make such a statement?
Some who agree here with their comments may be staying in one of those huge complexes where tankers of water is supplied to replenish their tanks.
It is a big racket - taps going dry many areas but water tankers supplying water whoever ready to pay!!!! Ministers have made money out of this created situation.
Why anyone should blame the newly elected Govt. for the apathy of the previous Govt. The New Govt. has not taken over as yet -
and some of you are already complaining of them. Is that the frustration from the previous 5 Years you are venting out.?
If one reads the news - CM has already directed to look into the matter and working on it.
We will have good monsoons this year and following years because good Govt. is at the helm.
Everything will be alright as the months pass by (Cannot use word - days - as it is concerning our huge Karnataka State. Not our individual houses)
All of us, let us pray for good monsoon and extend good co-operation with govt. authorities and things will look up - for the better.

Then why he has to go BACK there .. it is so difficult to undersatnd what actually you want to say.
If he was there for 5 years. I am sure he has learnt a lot of things about forests and has gained precious knowledge from his VANAVASA which will help him in his present responsibilities.
