New Delhi, Jan 1: The cold snap, sweeping vast swathes of North India, has claimed four more lives pushing the death count this winter to 100.

The latest casualties were from Uttar Pradesh. The state so far has seen more than 80 people die due to the cold.

Thick fog blanketed many parts of the region disrupting road traffic, which moved bumper-to-bumper though air services operated on schedule.

Mercury plummets

Srinagar shivered with mercury plummeting to minus two degrees Celsius while Jammuites had a comfortable day with the minimum temperature settling at 7.6 degrees Celsius.

Fresh snowfall in tribal belts in Himachal Pradesh aggravated cold wave conditions with mercury hovering minus 10 to minus 15 degrees Celsius in Lahaul valley.

Mercury rose by several notches in Chandigarh where the minimum temperature settled at 8.2 degrees Celsius, as the sun shone brightly providing much-needed respite from a prolonged cold spell.
