'Not a sanyasi to give up fisheries department,' says Abhaychandra

Update

Bangalore, May 27: Karnataka’s new Fisheries and Youth Services Minister Abhaychandra Jain, a first-timer in the Siddaramaiah cabinet, has declared that he has no plans to give up his fisheries portfolio.

''I am not a sanyasi to give up the fisheries portfolio," he told reporters, scotching newspaper reports regarding his intention to ask the Chief Minister to divest his responsibility of fisheries department.

Abhaychandra Jain, who represents the Moodabidri assembly constituency in coastal Dakshina Kannada district, had reportedly stated at a function in his home town on Sunday that he would seek a change in his fisheries portfolio as being a Jain he could not handle the department on account of his religious sentiments.

According to reports in a section of the media, the minister had reportedly stated in the presence of Jain seers and other community leaders on Sunday at Moodabidri that he would not like to handle the fisheries department as he was a ''vegetarian" and the Jain religion did not believe in killing any living beings.

The minister made it clear that he was ''misquoted" by the media and asseted that he had no intention of asking the chief minister to change his portfolio much less to resign.

''Allotment of portfolios to the ministers is the chief minister’s prerogative and I have to abide by his decision," he said.

When reporters persisted with the question on whether he would quit his portfolio, he clarified that the media had ''misquoted" him and that he would neither quit the Ministry nor seek a change in the Fisheries portfolio.

Asked whether he would relinquish the fisheries department, Jain said “I am not a sanyasi to give up the fisheries department."

Moodbidri: Jain to relinquish fisheries department on religious grounds?

Daijiworld Media Network – Moodbidri (SP)

Moodbidri, May 27: State minister for youth services and fisheries, Abhaychandra Jain, speaking to reporters on Monday May 27, expressed his intention to be relieved of the department of fisheries.

His decision has come in the wake of the demand from his supporters.

Jainism advocates non-violence in all forms and strict vegetarianism. Members of Jain community in the constituency have reportedly exerted pressure on Jain to relinquish fisheries department and request the Chief Minister to attach this department to some other minister.

Jain said he has decided to bow to their demand as holding this portfolio is likely to hurt religious sentiments of his supporters.

“I do not want to hurt the sentiments of my supporters. I have been receiving requests to get rid of fisheries department from the day the ministry was allocated to me,” he clarified.

    Mr. Wilson
Mr. Abhayachandra is MLA not only for Jain community. He is representing Moodbidri constituency as a whole. He has proved it during his earlier terms. That is the reason he has been chosen by voters for continuous 4 terms. He never told that, he is going to serve only Jain community.
But, I personally feel, a vegitarian person (belonging to any cast or community) will feel embarrased to visit area surrounded by fish/meat.

The people who are opposing Abhaya's decision, would also have opposed, if the Mujurai ministry was awarded to Mr. U.T Khader.

Cast and Profession are much related in our Coastal area in particular and all over India in general. But refusal of duty by an elected Candidate in democratic rule is not acceptable since he has been elected to represent our region to serve the common people in their needs. No doubt Jain Religion is pure vegetarians by principle but it doesn’t mean that he can’t become Fishery Minister since there is no rule to force Fishery Minister to eat fish. Same like U T Khader become family welfare Minister but does it mean that he has to implement the “Family Control Policy” in his own family in particular and in his region in general?

It is better he quits politics once for all. He must understand that he is not the MLA or minister for one community. He was not voted to power because of one community. He is not respected and loved by only one community. Government work is Gods work they say. But Mr. Jain is more interested in appeasing people of one community while forgetting that he is insulting another community. However all said and done he must have rejected the offer of this department before becoming the minister. Not after accepting the offer and being sworn in as minister.
But then again, it is better to accept his request since he will never do justice to his job as fishiries minister. Because to do justice to his/her job, one must first LOVE doing that job, next comes the ability to do the job.

He is a gentleman & mingles with people irrespective of their caste or religion. That is the reason, he is accepted by the people of this constituency for continuous 4 terms.
How someone can comment 'he is jain, so should not ask votes from non-vegiterian'? Pathetic.

His decision to give up the Ministry of Fisheries, just to avoid situation, when he might feel embarrassed to visit places, where he usually does not visit (fishing area, fish storage etc). When you are not sure of giving justice to your position, you should sincerely stay back or give up. This is what Abhayanna did. I really respect his decision.

A meaningful song from a old hindi movie comes to my mind:

The vegetables are also grown with animal manure/human manure which contain vitamin B-12. Jain cannot hug people who wear animal products and he is forbidden to travel in vehicles with leather seats & belts. Must not consume medicines since it has venom and alchohal. I have a tricky question, Suppose Mr. Abayachandra becomes Chief Minister of Karnataka, Should Karnataka have to shut Down its Fisheries? Because Ultimately he will be the one who is handling the Cabinet then. he might be Minister for Fisheries not One who will go and catch fish, Don't be silly. Let him Continue his portfolio because it is the one which gives life for lakhs of people living in sea belt, also a good revenue. Think in global prospective, then only we can grow. Mr. Abhayachandra is a clean man, he should handle this ministry, so the 3 districts on the belt. Remember the words written on the vidhana soudha " Sarakarada Kelasa, Devara Kelasa".

Do I understand from the comments of some 'learned' friends that fisheries ministry is all about EATING fish? On similar arguments, Law breaker is well suited to be a Law Minister.

Just because you don't eat fish that does not mean you must not accept the fisheries portfolio. It is like saying that I don't want the Home Ministry because I am not an anti social element or criminal. There seems to be no logic.

I too was surprised on this particular portfolio allotment.
The Minister should have taste and interest in the portfolio allotted to him or her to be able to give justice to that field.
Naturally, being a vegetarian, this portfolio doesn't suit Mr. Jain.
    May need some re-shuffle!

Good deccession by Abhayachandra Jain. I was surprised when Fisheries ministry allocated to him as the one who doesn't know the taste of fish or the market how the C.M. chosen this for him? This ministry is best suited for Pramod Madhwaraj.

Being Fisheries minister does not necessitate him to eat fish. As Fisheries minister he is supposed to work for the welfare the fishermen, take measures to increase fish yield, make fisheries a viable business, and so on. This is the stupidest decision any minister can take. It is nothing but a political stunt.

Really great decision by MLA Mr. Jain.. One side some MLA's are lobbying to get ministership by lobbying High Command and at this point Mr. Abhayanna is role model for them. He should be awarded Health related portfolio...

This was the first question came to my mind when fisheries ministry was given to him. Knowing Abayanna for so long the question remains unanswered. I had discussion with couple of friends but they convinced me some how. Thank you Daijiworld for the same.
