Coastal districts soak in joy of pre-monsoon showers

Mangalore/Udupi, May 27: It is that time of the year when people eagerly await the onset of monsoons, and are greeted with splashes of rain now and then as a trailer to what lies in store for the next few months. Though the relief may be temporary, one cannot but enjoy the brief fragrance of the rejuvenated earth, the sweet music accompanying the raindrops and the icy-cool breeze that freshens you up like nothing else.

On the night of Sunday May 26 and the morning of Monday May 27, pre-monsoon rain brought down temperature in the twin districts and elsewhere, especially in Udupi region.

The rainfall coupled with thunder and lightning, which started at around 10 pm, continued for an average of three hours in most parts of the coast, affecting power supply and cooling the temperature. It also provided temporary relief to far-flung areas where drinking water scarcity had worsened in the recent past.

Traffic and power supply were the worst hit because of rain.

The rainfall at Udupi was measured at 3 cm on May 26 night. In addition to Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts, Kodagu, Mysore, and Chamarajanagar districts bordering Kerala also received good rain.

Kerala has been experiencing heavy rain since the last couple of days, while districts in north Karnataka continue to reel under extreme heat.

The meteorological department has predicted heavy rain in the coast during the next two days. It has warned fishermen to be careful, as wind velocity from western direction has shot up to 45 to 55 km per hour.
