• Dies three months after delivering still-born 

New Delhi, Jan 2: In a tragic culmination of her tale of woes, Gudiya, whose reunion with her army man husband after remarriage with another man and carrying his child had hit media headlines, died in New Delhi on Monday of septicaemea, blood poisoning caused by bacteria or their toxins.   

Twentysix-year-old Gudiya, wife of Lance Naik Mohammad Arif and a resident of a Mundali village near Meerut, was admitted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital on December 13, 2006 as she complained of frequent breakdowns after the trauma of delivering a still-born baby in October last year.

She died of septicaemea, according to Deputy Commandant of the hospital.

Gudiya’s case came into media focus in August 2005 when her husband Mohammad Arif, who had gone missing in action since the 1999 Kargil war, was repatriated by Pakistan as a Prisoner of War (PoW).

During the five-year absence of Arif who had been presumed dead after initially being declared a deserter, Gudiya had married Taufiq and carried his child.

After his marriage, Arif had spent a very short time with Gudiya as he was called for active service during Kargil conflict.

On his return to his native vilage, Arif found his wife Gudiya married to Taufiq. But Arif and Gudiya were reunited following a decision by the village council.

Taufiq, who hails from Pataudi village in Gurgaon, tried to get Gudiya back but the council ruled in favour of Arif and she had since been living with the Army man.

Gudiya’s body was taken to her native village for burial.
