Mangalore: Men in drunken stupor snatch cane, beat up policemen!

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, May 28: The members of a gang, in an inebriated state, snatched away canes from the hands of two policemen, and beat them up badly near Alake Market in the city late night on Sunday May 26. Two constables attached to Bunder police stations in the city, were injured in this incident.

Head constables, Damodar (54) and Eshwaraswamy (48), were admitted into a private hospital here for treatment of injuries sustained in the incident.

At around 1.10 am on Monday, the police control room received a call. The caller told the policemen that a gang was involved with disturbing peace at Alake Market near Kudroli. As per the instructions of the higher officers, the above policemen were deputed to the spot. When the policemen questioned the gang about the motive of raising ruckus at the spot, the gang members reportedly snatched away canes from their hands and assaulted the policemen.

“When I went to Alake Market along with Eshwaraswamy as per the instructions of our higher officers, we saw that five persons, who were fully drunk, were involved in heated with raised voices. As soon as I got out of the police control room vehicle and asked the gang what they were up to, one of the gang members questioned me what problem I had with the issue. I said the people are facing problems. One of the gang members held my collar, and forcibly took away the cane in my hand. All the gang members then started beating me up with cane and hands. When Eshwaraswamy tried to save me, they hit him too with the cane. We were also kicked in the back and waist regions. The assaulters also used filthy words. Eshwaraswamy succeeded in escaping from there and calling the control room, upon which the accused sped away in two cars,” Damodar said at the hospital.

Eshwaraswamy said that both he and his colleague have put in over two decades of service in the department, and this was their worst experience so far. He said he was pained at the fact that the gang did not respect the uniforms they were wearing. He said both of them do not know the individuals involved, but will be able to identify them.

One of the assaulters is suspected to be a city corporator, sources said.

Assistant commissioner of police, Kavitha, and Bunder sub-inspector of police, Ramakrishna, visited the hospital and enquired about the well-being of their injured subordinates. Ramakrishna said that the policemen have got hint about the gang members, and exuded confidence of arresting the culprits soon.

First try to differentiate between idealism and reality Mr. D'Silva. I would love to live in a drug free, alcohol free, illness free, crime free, poverty less utopian world.Unfortunately one does not exist. One has to take all positives and negatives and then work out a balance. That is unfortunately the reality of today's world. I agree that the government should spend time and money on eradicating evils like alcoholism. The revenues obtained from the sale of regulated alcohol can be used for this purpose. And please do not compare a free peg with free rice. If the government is distributing free rice to the needy what is the harm in it? As far as free pegs are concerned they are already offered by all political parties during elections and political rallies.

Dear Prakash, you have missed many comments from the same intellectuals blaming BJP again, for two reasons.
    1. creating such incidents to malign congress
    2. out of old habit BJP is continuing such activities. new government will require some time to eradicate this menace.
Now you may wonder - there might have been a possibility that during BJP rule the congress might have done something to malign BJP. Please do not ask such questions. Congress is an all saints party. They will never do like that (at least some of us would like to beleive).

    Hi Simple, Bangalore

You have expressed befitting views on Mr. Shetty's comments. Particularly, last line, vey much inspiring.

About alcohol we have to bear in mind that if it is costly, people will drink sparingly and if it is going to be cheap, there would not be any control over the drinking class.(Alcohics). Labour class may drink three shifts, and skip two working days and the result is utter loss of health in their livelyhood.

If it is possible, kindly read again what Siddu said about alcohol for lower class.
You are aware, there is no stopping these people from drinking. Whatever better quality alcohol was available then was stopped by the earlier Govt. to fill the market with filthy alcohol to fill their pockets. This has resulted in not helping those poor class but has spoiled their health completely.
Siddu wants to stop that kind of bootlegging done by earlier officials.
I hope he succeeds in doing that.
Siddu's thinking is so unlike of those of his predecessor Govt. He really means well of the people and not the type to fill ones' own pockets all the time, as it was done earlier.

    Dear Ajay Lobo and Flavian,

Very good comments, appreciated. Corporator involved could be from congress party. Might be, celebrations and feasting on account of victory of congress in recent elections (Municipal n State), is still not come to an end. I wonder how drinking in night time in public place, creating trouble to citizens ( who want a peaceful sleep), can amount to celebration of Victory ? I am sure, these people will be rejected by Common Man in next elections. I strongly feel the corporator involved must be put behind bar. Peoples servants are turning out to be criminals. We all know Mangalore police are notorious for victimizing the victims. Policemen involved in this incident could be innocent. The powerful senior police officials ( like earlier SP sathish, ACP jagannatha etc.) should have got this treatment.

    Hi Ajay Lobo,

I agree to your points. I studied in Government college (years back)
and know how disciplined and active our M'lore police are.

There was communal hormony. Freedom to move around with your G.F. or enjoy icecream in Icream Parlour (well known place, Komals in Hampankatta). All such, freedom and personal choices were stanched by the BJP rule and their hencmen MP). what to do. Atleast since J.R. Lobo is the MLA, I hope thinks will be ok.

To talk about M'lore police, yes they are not with poor people. As long as they get their haftha they are happy. But how to stop this menace. In other words, if all the gondas fight with police, Manglore would become another Nexalite place.

People are jobless, bad poticians and influence of alcohol etc. are the main reasons.

Effective maintainance of public discipline comes from effective administration, which includes the police as well. What effectice will 30 odd cops have on a lakh population???
Lets stop talking of the BJP misrule and start putting pressure on the present government to make immediate arrangements to fill all vacant positions in the police department and all other departments responsible for public service.

A mallu tea stall owner confessed that when Kasab and his accomplice opened fire at the CST, there were 10 cops hanging out in the shop some of them armed, but they simply fled. 20 Cops in Azad Maidan police station were so scared they switched of the building lights as Kasab passed by after the carnage.

Fist of all the police department is responsible that no one is not respecting their uniform, reason people are thinking that if they commit any crime and will be left off after paying small fine or corruption. Secondly punishment in India is not there if you attack Government official. I saw some politicians slapping Government officials and giving some reason that the official has misbehaved with him. Now they have equip the police with proper weapons not with canes. Police department prove the public that they are not corrupt and lastly during office duty attack on Government official must be treated as l non bailable crime, and steep punishment must be given.

Praveen Sir, let me guess what happened. Two policemen reached the spot wielding the cane, caught the collar of the first available person (may be the corporator) and shouted "Bol.. Magane"... That's all. Rest of the story you know already.

I wish these beaten up police are able to note the car number! Otherwise they may not fit the job!! Police vehicle must be fitted with camera too? Without precaution how can they handle such barbarians?

Obviously, this gang has drunk cheap quality liquor. Siddanna's plan to supply cheap but quality liquor may solve the problem.

Mr. K.A.D'Silva, you should understand certain facts. It has been proven over and over that prohibition is a failure and there is no way curtailing the sale of alcohol will succeed anywhere in the world. In Gujarat there is prohibition, but alcohol is available in plenty to everyone who drinks and nobody has been able to stop it.

Please note that a labourer who earns a minimum wage and with a habit of drinking will go looking for his daily dose to bootleggers if he is not able to find it in the market and in our country we have already witnessed many tragedies with hundreds of people dying after drinking illicit liquor. Therefore Siddhu's plan to introduce cheap and clean alcohol will for one, help in stopping bootleggers and their poison, unnecessary deaths and tragedies and at the same time earn revenue for the government.

I agree to disagree your views. instead of promoting Govt can spend some time and money to eradicate alcoholism. Govt need to take help of Social service organzations / Social scientist. See how much efforts Dharmadikar Virendra Hegde doing for society to eradicate alcoholism. the main root of this problem is Poverty and illitracy. we need to get these issues sorted out instead of making alochohol cheap. today this govt making as cheap and tomorrow next govt will 1 peg free for each person to get votes. same like done with free rice !!
