Kasargod, May 29: An undertrial who had given police the slip while being brought from court on Monday May 27, was caught by the police on Wednesday May 29.

The prisoner, P A Abdul Lathif alias Charal Lathif (40) from Chattanchal Tekkil, was arrested by a team led by Kasargod circle inspector Sunil Kumar at Kuttikol.

Lathif, said to be a notorious prisoner, was already serving a sentence in Kannur central jail in connection with a theft, and was brought to court for his alleged involvement in another case.

On Monday, he was produced in Kasargod court and was being taken back to Kannur jail. He escaped from the clutches of the police near Vidyanagar bus stand. Though police gave him a chase, he managed to slip away.

It is said that he spent the night in a forest area at Cherkala and next morning caught an auto rickshaw to Kanathur.

He bought a pair of slippers from a shop in Kanathur and again took refuge in the forest. The police on receiving this information began manhunt in this area. But even as the police were searching the forest, Lathif escaped and took an auto to Kuttikol. The police, however, learnt of his whereabouts and arrested him there.

Lathif was taken to Vidyanagar police station. He was later produced in court and shifted to Kannur prison.
