Educare Trust : Rs 25 Cr fund to support needy students

Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network

Mangalore, May 30: Quite often we see poor students, though they may be brilliant in studies, deprived of opportunities to realize their dreams due to paucity of funds. Several students who are capable of becoming doctors or engineers are forced to opt for lesser courses due to lack of support and financial difficulties.

But now, an NRI entrepreneur from UAE has stepped in to reach out to such Mangalorean Catholic students, in a way that perhaps no one in the past has ever done for the community. This highly visionary and magnanimous NRI, who has requested to remain anonymous, is investing a Rs 25 crore Educare Fund, which will be managed by a team of trustees and well-wishers, with the blessing and good wishes from Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius D'Souza.

Canara Organisation for Development and Peace  (CODP - a non-governmental organization voluntary agency operating in the coastal Karnataka districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi and Kasargod in Kerala), an institute under Mangalore diocese which has rendered yeoman service to the poor and needy from past several years will involve in the execution of this dream project which is expected to help thousands of poor students in the coming years.

The Educare Trust will disburse the reserved amount over a period of five years and then on the scheme will continue by repayment of “interest-free loans” from the students back to the Educare Trust.

This scheme by the NRI family, in collaboration with CODP, is a compulsorily refundable interest-free loan which is to be repaid within one to two years after completion of studies. The selection process of deserving students will be completly on merit basis, and each and every deserving student will be benifited. The selection process will comprise of a team of CODP and Educare Trust members.

Fr Onil Dsouza

Speaking to Daijiworld, Fr Onil D’Souza, director of CODP said, "Based on the above scheme, every year around 400 to 600 deserving students of Mangalore and Udupi diocese will be getting the benefits to pursue their higher education in the field of medicine, engineering, paramedical, MBA, MCA, MA, LLM, journalism, BEd, BSc nursing, undergraduation (BA, BCom, BSc, BCA, BBM, LLB) diploma in polytechnic, ITI etc every year.”

Fr Onil further said, “Merit students from poor families whose income is below Rs 2 lac per annum can apply for this facility. Meanwhile, priority will be given to orphans and to those students whose families are affected by tragedies and life-threatening diseases.

"Once the applications are received, interview of the students who have applied will be taken in order to make sure that they are deserving candidates. The final list of students will be forwarded to Educare Trust which will then disburse the funds to the students," added Fr Onil.

Applications are available with parish priests or with CODP.

Last date to submit the application is June 30, 2013 for degree students and July 31, 2013 for other courses.

Simply awesome! God bless this generous heart and his family! A single person reaching out is simply unbelievable. St.Mary''s Konkan Community (SMKC) Dubai has been doing the same for the past 10 years but to the tune of a very smaller amount. Engineers and doctors have passed out from the portals of SJEC and Fr Muller''s Medical College through the SMKC Education Trust fund established at Mangalore Bishop''s House in 2004 but the pay back is only negligible as the students do have commitment due to the poor family background. But this kind person and family has shown everyone the singular way, according to the teachings of Jesus Christ. "Whatever you do unto my brethren, that you do unto me"

Words are not enough to praise the good mind, act of kindness and brilliant vision of the DONOR, who wish to remain unanimous. Just wish to say “THANK YOU and Sincere Appreciation to YOU and YOUR family. All we can do is to appreciate your kind gesture and pray to God to bless YOU and YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY for making it possible and to shower HIS choicest blessings by way of Good Health, Happiness, Long Life, Peace of Mind, Good Luck and protect you and your family from all evils of the normal life. May the LORD also grant wisdom and vision to many others who could afford to follow your footsteps in their own capacity to help the community at large.
We are sure, this magnanimous kind gesture of yours will be rewarded in many many folds by the Father Almighty.
A small suggestion if permitted, that it may be very useful if a little portion of the same fund may be utilized to train and develop capable and deserving students in the community for IAS, IPS, IFS and other KAS courses so that our community would have able reap the benefits in future. IT may also be a good idea to establish a learning institution for our community youngsters to take up active politics to support the community as well as others.
Once again we sincerely appreciate noble human quality, vision, kindness, valuable gesture and the Humbleness shown by the NRI - DONOR and his FAMILY to establish the much-needed Education Fund, God bless YOU Sir and your FAMILY. Warm regards, Herman Lewis and Family and the entire team of RADIO SPICE 105.4 FM

The loan could be repaid within 5 years of studies would be apt. 2 years is too early for a youngster who has just passed out. It is difficult to immediately get a good job.

I really liked compulsory refundable clause. Those who take this loan will learn three important things.
    1) To be generous and humble (lesson from NRI entrepreneur who is generous and also humble)
    2) to become responsible (when you compulsorily repay the amount within a specified period automatically you will learn responsibility). Students should not pay the amount back from parents retirement savings.
    3. It teaches you to save. When student have to pay the amount within a specified period, they have to save their earnings in a disciplined way. This initiates a good habit of saving (and also to be generous) throughout their life.

Great scheme, good thinking and a boost to our society. God bless those who are selflessly involved in this project.

Sir, GOD is going to bless you with blessings and abundance as you are offering prosperity and great future to hundreds of deserving but financially backward students.
Those students who are benefitted through this charity programme must make a decision to help somebody else as they have received the generous help from an unknown person. I hope and pray that many rich people may be challenged to invest atleast a portion of their wealth to help the helpless people through any charity channel possible. Those rich people who are trying to portray their success of life through their massive mansions-fleet of luxury car collection etc are simply missing a whole lot of peace and happiness in life but the generous people are greatly blessed with divine peace and happiness.

It’s a great thing from the donor to keep himself away from the publicity and quietly donate such a huge amount of money to the needy and orphans without any fanfare. Though the NRI donor did not disclose his name, one can easily guess who he is. It reminds me a scripture from the Bible which reads “when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing“ (Matthew 6 :3). May the Almighty bless him and his family in manifold for his noble deed.
There are lots of rich Indians, who siphon their black money out of India and stash away in Swiss banks to avoid income tax. If they choose Indians banks, they can indirectly help Indians from their income tax.

This is extremely the need of an hour to avert aspiring talents fading away and ending up with doing some survival jobs. Alongwith this our great masses must understand priorities and ask our elected representatives to do their best to make higher education affordable and available to every aspiring child. Why talent should go a waste because we could not create appropriate infrastructure even after 65 years of independence. At least start working today in order to give our next generation both the education and opportunities, so that they need not depend on other countries for a living.

This fund was much needed for financially poor but intellectually brilliant Students . Many such students Opt. for courses with cheaper fees merely due to financial constraints. There are many students whose parents cannot afford bus tickets, food / clothing/ hostel expenses .Such students should be identified and encouraged to take up professional courses . The names of such students should be kept confidential . GOD Bless the donor and his Family. Long live the generous donor who has given this gift to the needy. There is a well deserved clause in the loan which has to be repaid, hence others can benefit in the future and the cylce goes on. Students availing this loan should be good enough to repay the kindness.

    Dear Donor,

Kindly reveal your name - for the sake of beneficiaries who really wanna remember your service and timely financial help in realizing dreams of good careers. Keeping anonymous is not a good way to do service. Beneficiary has the right to know who is giving help, and intern recognize the significant contribution from donor. There is nothing wrong to reveal name - atleast to the beneficiaries of your gesture. Great philosophers - Jesus, Buddha, Gandhi, Pigamber, Mahaveer, Nanak etc., great inventors - who selflessly sacrificed their lives n personal life for the benefit of humankind, are all not for hiding their identities. A noble soul will not aim for glory and fame, but the beneficiaries definitely need address to acknowledge the donor. It will help beneficiaries to contribute back to society what they have received in their upbringing. More than the Financial Help, it is the moral, ethical, and enlightened vision that beneficiary will encounter with the donor, will go a long way in impacting many ore lives in positive way. Appreciations must go to this donor, and must be a motivation for many more well-to-do personalities to come forward and help generously to the needy.

Now this is what I will call philanthropy. We have to respect this person's wish to remain anonymous for the good he is doing, while we have so many others vying for attention with their philanthropy. But one piece of advise for this selfless person is to ensure transparency of all loans that are lent. An appointment of an auditor is advisable in the very beginning.

The scheme is good in itself. Kudos to the benefactor. However, it would be nice if the scheme goes beyond Catholics and reaches out to all the deserving, irrespective caste, creed and religion.

An excellent initiative by the NRI entrepreneur. I am sure this is going to benefit a good number of needy students of christian community who aspire to become doctors, engineers and other professionals.

Receiving interest free loans for higher education is something great as in these days people reluctant to impart even 100 rupees without foreseeing any gain from the receiver.

Really appreciable of the gesture by this anonymous gentleman.

Muslim business tycoons should see and learn from this.

May God shower his choicest blessings on this generous benefactor and his family, whose magnanimous offer would help the needy and the deprived to get the benefit of higher education. By not publishing his name he has proved that what he is doing is not to attain fame or achieve any sort of gain.
