Manufacture, sale of gutka may be banned in state

Bangalore, May 31 (DHNS): The state government is understood to have decided to ban the manufacture and sale of gutka and panmasala.

A formal announcement in this regard is likely to be made on the occasion of World Tobacco Day on Friday.

Gutka has been banned as per the Centre’s Food Safety and Standards of India Act. Though the Union government notified the Act a year ago making it mandatory for all states to ban gutka, the state had shied away from it, apparently yielding to the pressure from arecanut growers.

However, areca growers say that the ban is being imposed due to lobbying by cigarette manufacturers.

The Health Department had put up a proposal on banning gutka soon after the Centre’s notification. But the then BJP government shelved the proposal bowing to pressure from arecanut growers. Doctors’ associations and Petitions Committee of the Legislature, too, had recommended immediate ban.

Health Minister U T Khader had earlier in the day told reporters that people, especially the youth, are badly affected due to consumption of gutka. “About 20 states have already banned gutka. We have collected data on how the consumption has been a health hazard. Besides, the Supreme Court, too, has ordered in favour of a ban. Hence, the government is seriously considering it,” he added.

The minister said arecanut growers will not be affected.

    What will the areca farmers do in Karnataka. Commit suicide ? There will be more deaths this way than by chewing gutka. Karnataka Govt. please rethink the consequences arising out of the ban.

    Government takes decision which does not have any proper concern. It gives cheap liquor and bans Gutkha. Is th health is motive? No. because liquor is also dangerous to health. Then what is motive? Very simple. In the corrupt political circles, it is very clear that Government got more bribe from liquor industries but not from tobacco industries.

    I don't buy the argument that that the Government should consider the plight of arecanut growers before banning Gutka.. Gutka has already damaged the lives of middle class and labour class men. GUTKA should be banned with immediate effect. Government could consider giving support to arecanut farmers through different ways.

    Everyone is commenting here about ban on Gutka. Why cant govt ban cigarates and alcohol? This is insane by karnataka government by taking all areca formers into road.May be Mr. Khadar has done good job but what is the alternate for areca farmers ?
    He can argue that in 22 states gutka is banned ! but all these 22 states are not producing areca in their land so making such policy is very easy for them . But here its different ball game ! I am true supporter of congress but this decision without any alternative by khadar makes me so upset about my decision to vote to congress.

    Just Banning Gutka will not solve the problem of eating PAAN and spitting on the road. Gukta came in to use just about 30 years ago whereas Indian have been eating Paan and spitting in any corner since last 3000 years atleast. Even Devatas & Ramba/Urvashi were eating paan as per our Mythology.
    Now a days marriages of all the communities has a separate Paan counter, where even small children eat sweet Paan and spit in the corners of the Hall.
    All this can be stopped only with strict rules about spitting in public as in Singapore.

    Devtas and Rmbas and Urvashis, never use to spit Pan on road side they used to carry "Thhok dani"
    To make it simple, just restrict Paan to individual residence. Let them eat and spit on their wall, or use thokdhani according to their culture/maturity. But not allowed spitting on public property. Those who speak of culture, be ready to clean the "Cultural Spit" created by fellow cultural Indians.

    @Mohan H Naik/Mangaluru,

    I would strongly support the ban on Gutka as long as people will restrict themselves from spitting on roads and at public places,

    OR if our coastal moral police from BJP, Bajrang, Senes and others will do the moral policing against those who chew Gutka and spit in public, so that the national environment remains clean and healthy.

People who are commenting here should understand that arecanut is no way health hazardous. It is right to ban some taobacco contents which these congis never do.

    Very bold and healthy decision by the Govt. Guthka is already banned in many states already after it being proven beyond doubt as the largest cause of oral cancer taking away lives of young productive adults!! Those themselves in the final stages of oral CA caused by chewing pan masala have urged the Govt. to ban this carcinogen to save precious lives!!

    Very Good move!.
    Gutka is really slow poison, but sadly many are addicted to it.
    Ban not only manufacturing and sale, but also CONSUMPTION.
    Gujarat banned alcohol, which is o.k if taken moderately in right age!
    Karnataka is banning Gutka which is 100%right!
    We should be ahead of Gujarat in right direction!

    @Valerian D'Souza,

    Did my statements say that i have put karnataka down ? Being an kannadiga can i put my own state down ? As far as developments is concerned Gujarat tops India. Karnataka need to have more developments in coming days. All investors r moving to gujrat now.Sir banning gutka, will effect arecanut workers rite. Instead they could have banned that chemical. Well why cant they ban liquor? So many families have come to streets cz of this. And our CM is bringing cheap liquor which will spoil poor families again.

    Smoking is most dangerous & cause of cancer. Govt may get direct revenue from sale of cigarettes but ultimately we all pay a big price. My suggestion is not banning cigarettes or alike products but restrict the sales. Cigarettes n bedies should not be sold in loose, it should be sold in packs of 20s. Young guys can afford rs 7 for a cigarette but he might find difficult to have rs 140 with him. Even I was a smoker other day even I was tempted to have a fag after 10 yrs, it was easy for me to buy just one fag for rs7. Hope this point will be taken seriously by our hon. Health minister.
