Mangalore: Auto rickshaw driver loots women of gold, cash worth Rs 7 lac

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, May 31: An auto rickshaw driver allegedly robbed a mother-daughter duo of their valuables on Thursday May 30. The value of gold ornaments looted by him has been put at seven lac rupees, and the women reportedly were also relieved of Rs 5000 cash found in their possession.

Khaleeda (55), and her daughter, Farah Kausar (28), residents of Vijayanagar, Bangalore, had arrived here on Thursday morning to take part in a marriage function at Bikarnakatte in the city.

They alighted at Jyothi bus stop in the city from the private bus early morning, and hired an auto rickshaw to reach Bikarnakatte. However, the rickshaw driver, instead of taking the passengers to Bikarnakatte, summoned two of his friends by making a phone call, and took the vehicle to an unidentified destination with the passengers and his friends. After stopping his rickshaw there, he, supported by his friends, put pressure on the women to hand over their gold ornaments.

When the two resisted, the three inflicted scratch injuries on the hands and necks of the duo, before snatching away ornaments worth seven lac rupees and Rs 5,000 in cash. Thereafter, the women were taken by the robbers in another rickshaw and dumped by the roadside, before making good their escape. The women then called their relatives over phone and conveyed the information to them. With help of relatives, both of them got admitted into a private hospital, and lodged police complaint.

Under such circumstances, every passenger should note down the Auto number while getting in to the auto and send the number by text message to your relative / friend while travelling. We have to take some pains to teach rowdies , particularly travelling in the nights and in early morning.

In a place like Jyothi where people from other places alight at Mangalore , a prepaid Rickshaw stand should be setup. Even a nominal fee of Rs 2 per Richshaw need to be given for manning the stand, such cheating & looting can be avoided. Can Ivan D'Souza take initiative in this matter?

This Auto driver got a chance to loot, when our elected representatives loot our country. I blame the women for ornamenting themselves with so much of gold. When they are ornamenting themselves with so much of gold and precious stones they should have traveled by air. Who know's if they were carrying so much of gold.

Now for the 1st time I heard this ie., looting the ladies. I am sure this driver must be out sider cannot be mangalorean. I always found that Mlore auto drivers are very nice and very helpful. In recent years we can find some auto rickshaw-drivers at Kankanady
Railway Station,Central Railway Station,Pumpwell Circle(near Pentagon Hotel)who demand more money from the passengers who arrive late night or early morning.
They are supposed to charge one and a half times auto fare only. But some looters and goondas demand Rs.150 from Kankanady Railway Station to Bendur Cirle. This is because of inactiveness of Police/RTO Departments. If Police want to stop this they can easily
arrest the gang leaders at Kanakanay railway Staion any night.

On Jan 9,2013 an auto driver was pararded removing shirt in Suratkal town by the Auto Union drivers lead by its President Mr.Umesh for molesting a minor girl in his auto. If there was a Union President like Mr.Umesh in Mangalore he definitely would have initiated to catch the auto driver who looted the women passengers.Generally auto drivers know kind of persons operating in their area.
Here also police should enquire the local drivers especiall moring operating drivers near Jyothi circle and I am sure enquiry may through some light that will help to nabb the culprits.

For the safety of passengers there shall be a system followed which should be made mandatory for all taxis and autos. The regestration number and contact numbers of the vehicle should be stencilled inside the vehicle in large fonts with the name of the owner of the vehicle. Also the rates per meter table also to be made available.
Friends, please suggest if anything else can be included for safety of common public who travel by public transport like me.

Autodrivers in Bangalore, and other metro cities are FAMOUS for looting gullible passengers who come from other places/cities. Traveler is always being tricked and victimized by local loot gangs.

Mangalore too joined this list. Auto Union President IVAN D's hafta would have increased... and auto drivers are forced to find shortcuts to garner money to satisfy their boss.

During long journeys, reaching destinations at Early morning and late night always is DANGEROUS bcz there are crooked people waiting to take advantage of the helplessness situation of travelers - be it rape, loot, murder etc. Why enough police is not deployed at sensitive areas ?

Passengers also must be blamed for their apathy. Make note of important parameters like number of auto/taxi, appearance of driver, search for some important mark on the vehicle before you make a travel.
By the way, where is IVAN's auto parked?

Once he said to me that, he never seen such honest auto drivers around India which he found in Mangalore. He also said every time when comes to Mangalore he just show the address of the place where he has to go and without any hastle sincerely they use to take him. whether it day or night.

But see what this rascal. He sould be traced and learnt a lesson in such a way that no body like him should think in the future.

There was a time when anyone going to Mangalore and coming back had a good opinion about auto people of Mangalore. But now for the past 12 years I come to Mangalore every weekend and have to face the torture of auto's in Mangalore. I get down in PVS and have to go to new chitra, doest even cost the minimum. But they charge 50 rupees. I simply choose to walk. But I feel bad about passengers who have to go far away places. It is now much better in Bangalore. Out auto's in Mangalore have become arrogant or try to show thier might if we get down to an arguement.

People please exercise caution, be careful of your conversation when commuting or when you are in public. People may eves and seize the opportunity to loot. I am sure the ladies would have told the rickshaw driver that they were here to attend a wedding and everyone knows of our ladies' passion to wear loads of jewellery on such occasions.
