Mangalore, Jan 4: Police could be effective as long as they are in service seems to be the theory of these thieves who broke into a retired police sub inspector's house and decamped with valuables and cash.

The thieves who broke into the house of K Sitaram, a retired police sub inspector at Subhashnagar near Pandeshwar here have decamped with 3 sovereigns of gold and Rs 9,500 in cash.  The total value of the stolen valuables is estimated at Rs 23,500.   The theft took place when no one was present in the house.  The thieves had entered the house after breaking open the front door of the house.

The theft came to light when the family members came home on Monday January 2.  A complaint has now been filed in the Pandeshwar police station in this regard.
