Kasargod: Consumer Forum raids Snehalaya orphanage at Manjeshwar

Daijiworld Media Network - Kasargod (DV)

Kasargod, Jun 1: Snehalaya orphanage at Thumminadu, Manjeshwar, was on Saturday June 1 raided by the members of Consumer Forum, Manjeshwar and Thumminadu Nagarika Samithi.

The raid was carried out based on complaint by the public, sources said. The orphanage is run by Joseph Crasta.

It is said that the organization has been active from the past three years, and that under Kerala Board of Control of Orphanages and Other Charitable Homes, it is certified from 2011 to 2014. However, the members of raiding team said that the orphanage has been functioning since 2009.

Sources said that the Consumer Forum received complaint from the public about the poor condition of not only the orphanage and its premises, but also the surroundings. The Forum thereafter enquired about it with Joseph Crasta, while Thumminadu Nagarika Samithi filed an application under RTI.

The RTI information reportedly revealed that though home has permission for only 25 inmates, as many as 86 persons, including those who are physically challenged, mentally ill, and even children, are housed there. The condition is also said to be poor, with bad odour in the premises which reportedly led the public to complain. A lane beside the home meant for public use is also said to be in poor condition.

Raju Singh, an 8th std boy from Jammu who went missing, told reporters that he had come to the orphanage about one-and-a-half years ago but so far there has been no attempt to send him back to Jammu. He is the son of Suredra Singh, a commander in Jammu, and Kamala Devi.

The raid was led by Sanjeev Shetty, president of Manjeshwar Nagarika Samithi and Consumer Forum.

Its a publicity stunt. The work carried by the person and the institution is commendable. Is there a alternative to the destitutes ? Can these attackers provide shelter and food for the inmates ? Police should have taken a undertaking from the attackers.

I wish the Consumer Forum Manjeshwar and Suvarna News Channel Bangalore will come forward to take care of all the inmates of Snehalaya. Its very very easy to raid an Ashram run by a Christian as it was done to Corporator Lancelot Pinto by some BJP people.
He was simply harrased by that group. Now Nagarika Seva Samithi of
Manjeshwar has done the same thing.
Let this Nagarika Seva Samithi lend some Seva to Snehalaya.

It is shame on the part of the people who have raided this orphanage as if it is an 5 star hotel. somebody is doing service for people who are in need. instead of helping, these organisations are giving a bad opinion of the minds of the people those who may wish to serve the poor people. i personally know Mr.joseph. Please let him run that organisation so the beggers and the sick people are benifited.

there are some individuals take up social responsibility and start some charitable works. as there are more needy in the society, perhaps the number of inmates could go higher than the allowed limit. the quality of food provided might be poor. but we should respect the great individual who took initiative of this devine job.
There is a doctor couple near to manjeswar (Sasigoli) who put their earnings to accomodate, feed and school some unpreviledged children from the society. Even they couldn't skip unworthy comments from some elements of the society.

It is very easy to raise a hue and cry that there is stench, the place is dirty and foul smell emanates. Well what do you expect when few people are trying their level best to bring some relief to the downtrodden and needy who have been shunted out by their kith and kin. The boy from Jammu claims that he has not been sent back. How did he land here in Manjeshwar / Mangalore from North absconding and running away from his parents? Now he wants to go back how can he claim that the Snehalaya authorities have not tried. This is just a gimmick to deface the charitable institution. Instead of raiding and harassing, it would have been justifiable if the concerned authorities had helped to alleviate the hardships of the inmates. They are saying instead of 25 over 86 are housed. This is a charity institution and how can they turn away the destitute people coming to them craving for food and shelter. Shame on our government authorities, who support groups who are basically social evils who do not raise a finger to help the society, but harass genuine institutions. The complaint would have been justified, if there was ill treatment of the inmates. I have a strong feeling this is purely communal biased act as this institution is run by the Catholic authorities. Hope the government will lend a hand in meeting the immediate needs of this institution and ask the public to help out wherever possible, rather than cribbing and complaining.

This clearly shows there is no place for good things in today's world. i have been visiting joseph's ashram for the last one year and we visit this place to spread some smiles! what joseph is doing is commendable! He picks up mentally challenged people from street who rely on food from garbage for thier livelihood. Joseph takes them to this home, treats them with a lot of love, takes them to hospital so as to treat thier illness too and he has ensured that most of the inmates are sent back to thier home after getting thier address. The same news channels have appreciated thier work in the past , today all of a sudden they begin to complain coz the place apparently stinks.
God is there today to see what is right and wrong, and mark my words he will come out clean for the betterment of society. Most of us do talk of doing good to the society or a lot of charity, but Josephs' action talks louder than his words!
    God bless him

People like Mother Theresa, U.C.Paulose of Seon Ashram, Hajabba of Ullal School, Corporate Lancy and Corrine Rasquinha of White Doves with their destitute homes and now Joseph Crasta have gone through the process of intimidating, mud slinging, criticism and attacks by the so called pseudo well wishers of community, vedike's, sena's, enforcing authorities, etc and have survived and rebounded' as there was genuine benevolent intention of lifting the helpless and neglected brethren of our society with their sacrifices, dedication and leadership. I only wish that those who criticise the good work done by these Samaritan members of our society, just spend a day or two in these Ashrams/places and experience themselves the touching service rendered by these Samaritans and I have no doubt, they will those casting stones and veil of biased thoughts and walk out glorifying the selfless love showered on those inmates flowing from their noble deeds. Long live the band of these committed selfless Samaritans members of the society for sacrificing their family time and comforts for others. I am sure Joseph Crasta would emerge victorious from this ordeal, as he has all the noble intentions in his committed mission.

Public making complains. So now let the complaining public and the Samithis and the inspectors take over. They can do a better job as they see.

When people come begging at your gate, do you take them in and care for them ? or do you shew them out.

Mr John Crasta takes in any and everyone and looks after them whether there is room or not. He does not send away anyone. He does not say, "sorry, I got permission only for 25 inmates, so I cannot take you, go away"

May be from now on, Mr John Crasta has to show them the way to the Samithi's office so that the office bearers will take care and house these inmates.

Good opening as can be seen.

Of course, it’s very easy to lodge a complaint or talk ill about anything but, just impossible to rehabilitate such people by any ordinary person. I’ve seen such incredible talent in Mr. Joseph Crasta, a noble person doing this selfless service.
Now the question is why there were 86 inmates where the place was permitted for only 25? So simple! destitute are on the rise and all the organizations are full and do not have the capacity handling such people.
Any sensible consumer forum wouldn’t have committed such a blunder in raiding this place. What did they find? Drug trafficking den or so on… disgrace upon this organization.

They surely care so much, that is why they raided to check the cleanliness.

Let all understand their genuine concern. Let them also get an opportunity to do the work, and understand how easy it is to feed, provide security and maintain hyegine

Enough said. The ashram is meant for 25 but houses 86, that means it has insufficient space for its inmates. Let Thumminadu Nagarika Samithi oblige Mr. Joseph Crasta with some more space so that he can house not 86, but 150 persons and also enough funds to house, clothe & feed them. Today it is not all about money, but time. Will anyone give their time to spend with the inmates, make them laugh, wipe their tears, be their friend. That is the most important gift we can give to the inmates. Let us share our time with these folks.

One must be authorized by law to conduct the raid. What kind of power the Nagarika Samithi has? What is Nagarika Samithi's contributions to this orphanage? They can simply visit the facilities with the permission from the owner and help him taking corrective actions.

There are so many people live in slums, especially the so called untouchables (it is wrong word) and I suggest this Samithi should visit (not raid) those slums and help them live better life.
