Hit-and-run accident leaves one dead, two in hospital

Realtor's 22-year-old son nabbed in Audi hit-and-run case

Bangalore, Jun 3 (PTI): Cracking a hit-and-run case within hours, city police today nabbed a youth for allegedly killing a 19-year-old boy by ramming his SUV into an autorickshaw.

22-year-old Rajesh, son of a realtor, was driving the Audi sports utility vehicle, when it rammed the autorickshaw last night, killing Deepak on the spot and seriously injuring another occupant.

The youth was arrested this morning, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M A Saleem said.

The accused has been charged under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and was in police custody, he said.

The injured, a colleague and neighbour of Rajesh, had been admitted to a private hospital.

According to police, under the impact of the collision, the autorickshaw was thrown up in the air and landed on the ground with a thud. The accused along with two of his friends, who were also in the SUV, fled the scene abandoning the vehicle.

The vehicle belonged to Rajesh's mother, police said.

The deceased was the sole breadwinner of his three-member family and was working in a pub in the city.

Hit-and-run accident leaves one dead, two in hospital

Bangalore, June 3 (DHNS): A brand new Audi car rammed an autorickshaw near Mayo Hall, killing a passenger and injuring two in the wee hours of Sunday. Police have launched a search for the occupants of the car who fled after the accident.

Deepak (19) and his cousin Karthik (20), both residents of Murphy Town and employees of a pub were returning home from work by an autorickshaw at about 2 am.

When the auto took a right turn towards Ulsoor near the Mayo Hall junction, the speeding Audi rammed it from the opposite direction. The impact of the collision was so huge that the auto was flung into the air and landed several feet away.

The car later ploughed into the footpath, before coming to a screeching halt. Deepak was killed on the spot. Karthik and auto driver Younus Ali sustained injuries.
Eyewitness

Syed Abdul Khaleel, another auto driver and an eyewitness to the accident, rushed all the three men to nearby Bowring Hospital.

According to Khaleel there were four poeple in the car —three men and a woman — all in their 20s.

He later told police that four got out of the car and discussed the incident amongst themselves, before getting away on foot. “They did not even come to help the victims,” he said. All of them absconded as Khaleel was helping the injured.

“Of the two people seated in the auto, one was killed on the spot. The other, Karthik, had been thrown far away from the vehicle. He had suffered a major head injury and was unconcious. The driver was trapped below the auto,” Khaleel said. He said he shifted all the three to the hospital in his auto and lodged a police complaint.

D G Rathnakara, inspector attached to Ashoknagar traffic police station, said going by the scene of the accident and the eyewitness account it was evident that the car was moving at a speed of 120 kmph.

“The airbags in the car inflated when the Audi struck the auto, saving those in the car,” he said.

The car had a blank number plate. A closer examination showed that it was purchased two or three days ago.

Documents found in the car showed the registration number as KA 51/TR 324, indicating that it was purchased from an agency registered under the Electronics City RTO.

The inspector said that the owner of the vehicle is yet to be found.

catch him, his mother and father - all are to blame. father because of financing reckless activities. mother because of raising a reckless child, son because, even at 22, wanting to play with toys.

There are many such families, who give life threatening toys to their children, life threatening not for them, but for others on the road. Unless strict punishment - literally denial of life is given to them, they are bound to repeat this and take other's life.

not only these, there are many others, who have ill gotten wealth, and dispose it through these deadly means.
this time, atleast the fellow is 22 years old, so won't be treated like a minor. few years ago, in Mangalore, a minor had killed 2 people with similar acrobatics, and as he was minor, he was let loose.

I agree with Varshal's comment. The auto had entered into MG Road without stopping to see if there are any oncoming vehicles. Even though the SUV was driven very fast, the auto driver could have waited near the junction to see if there was any oncoming vehicle. Though my view might not be correct. The SUV driver might be drunk and returning after late night partying. The delay in arresting the driver might weaken the investigation.

Sad to know that we have lost a life.
But Bangaloreans generally disobey traffic rules. I don't know who was at fault, but if one of the either drivers , took a little bit of extra care it could have been avoided. If you ever happened to drive in Bangalore, you would certainly remember an old kannada song - nooru kannu saaladu...Bangaloreans don't follow lane discipline. Its better to flee the spot just to save your life, in case of any accident that too if you hit a 2-3 wheeler or vice versa. The general rule of description of an accident in Bangalore is that the bigger vehicle is always at fault even if that was parked within the parking limits & also unoccupied.
Coming to Physics, the autorickshaw was nor fixed to the ground neither there was any barrier on the other side of it, which is why it was tossed in the air as soon as the car hit it.Also the car didn't completely transferred its momentum into the auto rickshaw as it continued moving even after hitting it. Survival in case of an accident is mere luck. In this case the survivors were certainly thrown out of their vehicle.

The gross weight of an Audi is more than 3 ton as compared to any mid segment car which weighs .7 ton (on an average). I don't know if the Audi was being driven at 120 kph, had it been the case then the momentum would be, mass * velocity = {3,000 * (120 * 1,000) / 3600} kg-m / sec = 100,000 kg-m/sec. And trust me, at this momentum if it hits an Auto weighing merely 350 kg, (momentum of the auto will be 0 as it was not a head-on collision), the auto rickshaw would have completely crushed and none of the auto passengers would be alive.

It seems we both are accusing each other, whereas our fight should be against the govt, against its inability to curb the nuisance, crime and corruption.
Around 35-55 years ago the population of our country was merely 400 million, after the independence our grandparents were so damn happy that India's population shot up to 1.2 billion. India's policy, infrastructure, planning commission can't even support one third of its current population, so forget the rest. We are a consumer market, not a single electronics goods, automobiles and day to day stuff get exported unlike China and other developing ('ed) countries. So how will govt tackle this population boom.. unemployment? Because, again the so-called educated people will blame the govt only for this disaster. So, the answer to this was foreign investment, open Call Center/BPO, International IT giants/financial institution can invest in India because of cheap labor and young talent, and what our Govt is doing is sitting idle and enjoy the taxes paid by these companies and us. Now imagine the situation when you don't have a single IT/BPO in india and think about the faith of nearly several million direct employees and others of dependent industries (i.e., travel/tourism agencies, insurance co., hotel management, catering.. and the list is endless). India will be back to old age and there will be "civil war".
Nowadays the competition is more and current (educated) generation is constantly under stress and pressure. They love to work and party hard and I don't see anything wrong with that. There are sports bars in bangalore where people go and enjoy their stint.
Now, about culture and language, there is a say in Hindi, "Language aapne aap me itne mahaan hote hain ke usko koi chhota nahi kar sakta" and I believe "Bangalore is a product of unique blend of established traditions and new influences". And trust me no one can ever change other's attitude. All Auto drivers are localite, then why their behavior is so rude?

    Dear Shammi,

I don't buy the fact that "... out of IT/BT boom because lot of pub, dance bar and resort party are routine business in young bangaloreans life. financially it helps bangalore but morally it destroyes them". Do you think all non-IT citizens, auto drivers are of highest ethical standard !! Then what will you say when innocent call center girls are brutally raped and murdered by so called highly educated, righteous cab driver? Why an elderly couple was abused and beaten up by a group of honest auto drivers? Why a young student was harassed by a group of 5 jobless fellows from a shanty? Why the night shift employees are always targeted by the muggers? Going to a pub/restaurant or a discotheque can not bring you down morally, ethically. Our moral sense dictates a clearcut preference for the society which shares with us an abiding respect for individual human rights. I feel sad for auto driver, but that doesn't mean I would blindly go against my ethics and blame the BMW guy just for the sake of it.

    Dear Mr. Dayananda,
First of all how do you know the Audi is driving at 120 kmph? In that narrow junction no one can drive at that speed.
Secondly, It has nothing to do with IT/BT boom. Please don't vent your frustration on IT people. They are the only one who instead of honestly paying the income taxes enjoy very little or NO benefit from the govt. Nobody wants to drink and drive and eventually get caught. The police are always very eager to catch those driving drunk hoping to earn some quick bucks, they never catch the autowallahs standing outside the bar/restaurants charging an exorbitant fare after 10 'o clock. After a bottle of beer and supper (which hardly cost you ~600), if you try to catch an auto to your place, they will charge you 400 or nothing less than 300 for a merely 3/4 kms drive. Our commissioner always install police picket at every commercial area to stop this malpractices, but I tell you why they won't, because they hardly get some money/commission from these autodrivers, instead they will prefer catching those driving their bike/car in drunken state although their BAC level is marginally higher (mild euphoria) than permissible limit and its not only in Bangalore, its everywhere.

a good point raised by Shridhar. they don't care for the vehicles those r speeding on highways. they just turn the way they want n also stop any where between the road.
other day one rickshaw came n hit my left front side of the car bumper. i was waiting for the signal to turn green at jyothi, one rickshaw came from my left side n for his luck it turned green that man just dint care to stop n i was heading to a meeting that i was already late.
i had to change my whole bumper as a result.

Its well said by Mr. Rajneesh Mangalore. Auto Drivers do not see left and right and directly take turns on road without giving signals. If we ask them they will shout at us with low level language, very uncultured behaviour. I have experienced this so many times while driving. Even they show rowdism in front of female car drivers too. This is common in mangalore and udupi.

Auto drivers do not see left right and just turn auto at their will blindly. Yes the audi was at high speed, it is also the auto drivers responsibility to see if there is a vehicle approaching the road and then take a turn. Every one always blames the car person and do not even check whose mistake it is before commenting. AUto drivers do not see any thing while taking a sudden turn. It has happened so many times to me also..

Sheer mistake of autorickshaw driver, all autowallahs never bother to look around before taking turn, they think they are the king of the road. Blaming a car driver or a bus/truck driver is always easy and it seems to be a fashion nowadays, that if a car hits an auto its the car driver's fault, if a bus hits an auto, its the poor bus driver's fault. All bangaloreans are pissed of by the driving style of autowallahs and there attitude. The punishment has to come some way. Although this is a tragic accident, but once again I would say its the auto driver's fault.
