Movies, cricket spoiling youth : Bangalore High Court

Bangalore, Jun 4 (Agencies): A division bench headed by Justice K Sreedhar Rao on Monday, June 3 observed that films and cricket (specially IPL) have spoiled the young generation. Expressing grave concern over some of the current trends that have distracted the young people from studies and careers, the bench mooted the idea of raising the age at which one attains majority.

He was hearing two similar habeas corpus petitions where two 20-year-old girls  eloped with 21-year-old boys in separate incidents. The judge observed that youngsters, influenced by recent films, fell in love and  got married after fleeing form their homes.

The youths were thus ruining their lives at an age where they ought to be studying and standing up in society, the judge observed. The judge said that when police or courts question their behaviour, they defend themselves saying they were majors.

The bench then wondered if the lives of many teenagers could be saved if the age of majority was raised.

While hearing the case, the bench asked one of the girls whether her parents’ allegation that she was kidnapped by the boy was true.  To this, the girl replied that it was she who took the boy with her. The bench then said that before it was boys who used to take away  girls, but that the situation had changed with girls taking the lead.

The judge said half the youth were ruining their lives by watching movies and that IPL matches had a bad influence on society. The  bench further observed that the country will not see development till cricket was banned.

These days, youngsters don’t respect elders and are forgetting their culture and tradition, the bench observed, and allowed both  couples to live together.

Very difficult problem and no easy solution. Should ban the entire TV, internet and the like entertainment avenues as well then. Only way out is up to the parents to coax and get their children to limit the viewing times especially during the exam time, etc and hope for the best. The distractions will always be there in one form or the other and it is up to the individual concerned to have self discipline and get on to the task ahead.

Sports is never a spoiler. Football is played all over the world and betting is legal so make betting legal and it will surely solve the matter and then about spot fixing teams will have to be under thorough scanner during matches and surely everything will be in its place. But please do not say Cricket is spoiling the youth instead it has become popular and when football is played all over nobody says that its spoiling the youth then how cricket is spoling the youth its a false argument so please encourage the youth at least because of IPL our children have the urge to play well and get into some team and play the IPL.

Good followed with bad, development followed by bad things, it’s called vicious circle. You can’t choose only good things, some bad things will automatically come.

India is developing faster and faster. Don’t expect only good things from rest of the world. Its not that all the young generation is bad, nor is all the young generation good. It’s up to the youths which they are going to choose! If you are seeing the average may be 5% or maximum 10% may be following modern movies or IPL style. Rest of the 90% is still good. Thank God.

Mitwaji, Banning IPL is like cutting the nose to cure the common cold. The negative aspects of the tournament should be FIXED. Positive aspects are many. It generates revenue, tax for the government, employment opportunity for hundreds be it in hotels, transport, restaurant, security, communication and so on. On the similar argument, I support lavish wedding by the rich. Allow them to spend. We need not be jealous. In that wedding count the number of people getting short term employment. Part of the money earned is required to be spent. Ensure that everything is done legally.

Better be late than never. At last someone raised the voice. Looking back at the last 15-20 years of cricket in this nation and especially IPL matches I feel it is total wastage of human resource. Cricket should be banned from India without any delay.Politicians, glamour world, cricketers all involved in easy money making business. Look at the owners of the IPL leagues.Afterall out of 1.3 billion population 11 players will come out to fool whole nation.

Once in a team they knew business endorsement can earn in crores. That is why even after loosing their form nobody wish to retire. Look at our young people addicted to TV, mobile and internet. If it goes like this sure the nation will not produce anything worth. It is high time all school and colleges adopt football instead of cricket. This will save time in addition built strong physique and athletic capabilities among children. Another worst thing is our movies. Most of them good for nothing. Only exposure of flesh and violence.Definately this will have impact on young minds. Few TV serials based on extra marital relations, no harmony between in laws (sas bahu fight).Where we are heading to? Are we loosing our conscience?

3.We have BCCI- No Control as the court said cricket spoiling.
4.We have danger sign on beedi,ciggrates- Govt making money via tax and court says youth spoiled.
5.TV serial makers say they only show us what happening in society and court ruled that these shows promote crime.

What a wonderful observation-Justice Sreedhar Rao-Hats off to you -Sir
Look at the gall of the Gal!In our days (beautiful they were!) we used to coax the girls to speak!A few words from them were enough to send us (me) in a tizzy! Hai! Hai! Where has delicate feminism gone?Development yes, Equality yes but not at the cost of "precious Feminine Traits' please! The romantic lyrics of yore seem to be forgotten to with none nearing the same being penned.Look at some examples:
    Kannada: Kolle Nannane! Wha?
Hindi: Balam Tune Maari-Jo Yeh Pichkaari!! Whoa?
And to add you have poems on 'Being a Woman, I am a Woman' and what not saying that they will not be challenged at all and all that.If it comes down to that-what's the basic difference-pray??There are some like me who still prefer the 'delicate race' to feel shy, speak through their eyes so that we can keep singing-
    Aap Ke Aankhon Mein Kuch
    Meheke Hue Se Raaz Hain'...
Tell me-Is that asking for much?

Your Honour, no doubt our youth generation is spoiled bit more then compare to one or two decades youths earlier. Indeed they have attained the age of majority but when they come to know the ground reality it’s too late. When they can’t differentiate between “Pyaar and Chaahat” they are not in a position to listen to their parents, relatives or elders. But we can still curb this kind of menace to certain extent by denying their birth right on their ancestor or parent’s property or wealth if they elope with any partner which is not suited to their caliber or family status. It gives more unbearable pain to parent’s if their loved ones take the route of their own but this is the price we all pay due to modernization too

You are 100% correct. Not only IPL CRICKET must be banned. If not possible the broadcasting must be stopped. When Americans, Japanese, Russians don't want Cricket then why we want. Already spoiled the youth. Difficult to bring back the original status...

Some people play somewhere... Here all others waste their valuable time shouting... If Doctors who are busy in OTs, Security Guards especially BSF, drivers, pilots are addicted to cricket means - just imagine the life.

When we are going to school our teachers insist us to play one game per day like Cricket one day, Kabaddi next day, Volleyball, Football etc... Games are required to keep ourselves healthy. How we can keep ourselves healthy watching at them when somebody play somewhere... ? There is one Kannada saying "Aatada samayadalli aata, Ootada samayadalli oota.." Now ... Morning also Cricket... Late night also Cricket....

Why unnecessary importance to CRICKET and CRICKET only....???? Football gives the players a very good exercise...

Who will tell these things to our law makers and how to dissuade students and children from this beast that ruin their life...??
