Education is important for social security: Ramanath Rai

Mangalore, Jun 9: "The central government under Sarva Shikshana Abhiyana allotted a sum of Rs 52 crore through zilla panchayat to the district for various programmes. Dakshina Kannada district has benefitted a lot through these programmes," said district in-charge and forest minister B Ramanath Rai.

He addressed the gathering after inaugurating the newly built auditorium and hall at Sarkari Shikshaka Shikshana Mahavidhyalaya in Hampankatta on Saturday June 8.

Addressing further, Ramanath Rai said that it was his first government programme as a minister. Stating that education was his favourite department, Rai said importance was given to education in the entire country due to the efforts of Rajiv Gandhi through Literacy Mission and efforts of various other leaders.

"Education is important to build the society and for individual social security," he added.

MLA J R Lobo in his presidential address said, "In education, infrastructure like buildings and so on do not play a major role but it is important how we make use of these facilities to create good citizens."

Lobo also asked parents to encourage their children in extra-curricular activities too along with their academic studies which will help them in personality development.

Ramrao H S, director of DSERT in his address said, "Last year the central government announced Rs 56 crore in 'Revised Teacher Education Plan', 75% of which was funded by the central government and the rest by the state government. There are chances that this year the government might sanction more than Rs 200 crore."

Philomena Lobo, deputy director and principal of teaching and non teaching staff, Rajendra Kalbavi, project director of DK Nirmiti Kendra, corporator Vinay Raj among others were present.
