Udupi: Assault on bus employee - accused surrender, protest condemned

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Update: June 11

Udupi, Jun 11: Even as the persons accused of assaulting a bus driver in an incident on Sunday night surrendered at Kaup police station on Monday June 10 morning, there has been widespread condemnation of the way in which the bus employees resorted to flash strike, inconveniencing scores of passengers in Udupi as well as in Mangalore.

It is said that the occupants of a car, including the local BJP municipal councillor, Yashpal Suvarna, angered by the fact that the driver of a private express bus moving to Udupi from Mangalore frequently overtook their vehicle by intimidating them through close overtakes, had intercepted the bus at Udyavar and beaten up its driver, Dinesh. Drivers of two other buses, Manjunath and Shamsuddin, who tried to help Dinesh, also were beaten up by the gang.

Mangalore

The names of the assaulters who accompanied Yashpal Suvarna, who also happens to be the president of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district Fishermen's Federation, have been given as Shivakumar, Yathish Kumar, and Vishwanath from Udupi. The accused secured bail on Monday afternoon.

The drivers of two 'Vishal' buses, Dinesh and Manjunath, as well as driver of 'Ayra' bus, Shamsuddin, have got admtited into the district hospital here for treatment.

In a complaint, the bus drivers also said that a passenger named Lakshman was also manhandled, and the window panes of 'Vishal' bus were shattered by the gang before fleeing from the scene. Thereafter, traffic was blocked at the spot for about one hour, before the police intervened and restored vehicular movement. Several buses curtailed their trips at Udyavar and offloaded the passengers. On Monday morning too, the strike continued till afternoon. Employees of private buses, who gathered at Udupi bus stand, held a protest and demanded justice. They remained stubborn, even after the bus owners and deputy superintendent of police, Dr Prabhudeva Mane, approached them with a request to suspend the protest.

Meanwhile, Udupi district president of Welfare Party of India, U Anwar Ali Kaup, in a press statement, asked the government to view the incident in all seriousness, as students, employees, and hundreds of other passengers faced problems because of this strike. He demanded for the running of government buses in all the routes.

There have also been calls to regulate the reckless driving of buses and other vehicles on the national highway.

Centre of Indian Trade Unions district committee condemned the assault and demanded action against the assaulters. It also demanded medical and other relief to the affected bus employees. Canara Bus Owners Association also condemned the incident, and demanded action from the government to ensure that such incidents do not recur. The association said that buses have begun to ply as usual since Monday afternoon, after the accused surrendered in the police station.

13 KSRTC buses were pressed into service after the buses stopped plying, on Kundapur-Udupi-Mangalore route. Even Volvo buses picked up and dropped off passengers at the places of their convenience, mitigating the hardships of people to some extent.

Kaup police circle inspector, Shivanand Walekar, oversaw law and order situation, with the help of Kaup station house officer, Archana K, Padubidri station house officer, Mahadeva Setti, Shirva police station in-charge, K R Naik, and other personnel.

Udupi: BJP leader, four others assault bus driver, protest staged

Umesh Marpalli
Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi

Udupi, Jun 10: A group of 5 miscreants who were allegedly drunk came in a car and waylaid a private bus near Udayavar at around 8.45 pm on Sunday June 9, and reportedly attacked the bus driver and others.

Udupi

As per the information obtained, a group of 5 people in a Ritz car (KA 20 P 8328) started creating nuisance for the Vishal Travels bus from Mulky onwards, by coming in its way repeatedly and applying breaks unexpectedly. But as soon as the bus reached Udyavar, the group waylaid the bus and attacked the bus driver Dinesh, causing him serious injuries.

As per the police complaint, five persons including BJP leader and Udupi councillor Yashpal Suvarna were in the Ritz car. The group also damaged three other buses, it is said. Sources say that Suvarna and the four others attacked the Vishal bus driver for not giving them way.

Another private bus driver identified as Shamshuddin and locals who came to Dinesh's rescue were also thrashed by the group. Altogether, four bus employees and three passengers were beaten up. The people informed Kaup police but the group fled from the spot immediately.

A case has been registered at Kaup police station. Circle inspector Maruti Nayak, Aman, traffic SI, DySP Prabhudev Mane, town SI Lingaraj visited the spot.

In this regard, a few private buses protested for an hour demanding immediate arrest of the miscreants.

The protest also continued on Monday June 10 morning with service buses plying from Udupi to Mangalore, Kundapur, Karkala, Hebri, Saiddapur going on strike. The protest hit Mangalore too with buses staying off the road. The protestors sat on a dharna at Kaup bus stand, and some of the schools have also declared holiday due to unavailibility of buses.

In Udupi, all the buses have been parked along Karavali road and the service bus stand is almost empty. The protesting groups and the bus owners have been dispersed from the bus stand, it is learnt.

Bus service resumes

The protestors in Udupi called off their strike by afternoon after assurance from the police that the accused would be arrested soon and action taken against them.

The bus employees also said that they were calling off the strike in the interests of citizens and students who had been hit by the protest.

I fear travelling via Mangalore-Udupi highway just because of these private bus drivers. They behave like hooligans killing people traveling in smaller vehicles. I appreciate the act of Yashpal Suvarna (whoever you are). I understand the reason for such a blow up coz I have experienced the torture these drivers give you on the highway! Keep up the good work

Any bus driver involved in road rage should be put behind bars and license cancelled. Public service is at stake with the lives of so-many people on board.

Also condemn public beating up drivers. I think frustration of lack of policing is showing up. DC to take note please.

Ravi Ullal, do not support vandalizes!! DK has had enough of such goondagiri! Report to police!! Do not allow any political party goon to take law into hands!!
It is not possible to draw conclusion on merits and demerits of rash driving. It needs sea change with combination of RTO, police, law makers and demand from general public. Why only in DK competition among buses?? Who is allowing private lobby?? How it works in developed countries?? Debatable!!
In reality we are in desperate need of 3 lane each side from M’lore to Kundapur. Vehicle tax and revenue collected is enough to manage beautiful road, rail and sea transport. Corruption has denied us all the comfort!

Taking Law in hand is wrong !!
If anyone comes & beat you, ….you should not beat……because it is against law.???
But you people just talking against the BJP with Congress mentality, just think humanity & reality. Read Daily local News paper , you will come to know how many people dies by road accidents. Most of the accidents due to rash driving of bus drivers. Visit the family members of the Victims, how they have to survive without the backbone of the family.
We are the victim of this Bus Owners, without keeping any political mentality, I say at least some one shown the daring to stop this Culprits (Bus Drivers).
You go & experience the driving in Mangalore – Kundapur highway, then you realize the fact. This Bus drivers , over takes by flickering the light, even though the vehicle coming from opposite direction have no chance to give way to them. The Two wheelers & light vehicle drivers are the victims always. Even this Drivers abuses us & try to bang our vehicle because they are sitting in Heavy vehicle it is stronger than our light vehicles. When accident happens they get out of the bus & run. Even though they kill the victim, next day we can see them driving in another bus.
This is our Law & Order ???? Do you people agree on this ?? This is the special Law provided by Bus Owners with political influence.
I am working on this project to minimize the traffic accidents but no Political leaders giving support. No Congress leader wants to go against Bus Owners . The reason behind this is, the Bus union leaders are the active members of Congress party.
Mangalore / Udupi Traffic Department s are paralysed , only you can see hundreds of Traffic police standing both side of the road during Political leader’s or any Celebrities visit to city.
I am sure most of the Traffic Police does not know all the Traffic rules !!
I have many pictures of Traffic offenders, even I produced to them but no action taken.

I dont think anyone would start a fight without any reasons. Every vehicle big or small has the right to way. But as it is known through our twin districts, the private buses act as if they own the roads. And what more do you expect from citizens when they are faced by such arrogance added with no actions from the authorities, the citizens are forced to take law into thier own hands.
So a piece of advice to the authorities, look deep into the matter and remove the dirt from the source, and not just say Mr. Yashpal and his friends were drunk & created this problem. Look both sides of the coin.

Irrespective of any political party As per my knowledge Mr Yashpal Suvarna never indulge in such activities,he is down to earth man, God knows the truth. We can't believe especially 'Express" bus drivers. We know how they drive in coastal roads.

Mr.Krishna , i really support Mr.Yaspal in this matter . The bus drivers are like devils of death on Mlr-Udupi road ,they just dont care about any other vehicles travelling in the road , for them important is thier timing ! Not the life of innocent people .

Need to give more treatment like this to the drivers , so they come in line !! ( Raddh burrnagne mogeleg mande popini )

So when any person insults private bus driver they can go for strike ? What about private bus conductors and drivers insulting passengers ? Here is the list of wats happening in private buses -
    1. They wont give sufficient time for the passengers to get down. They will be in hurry and they will scold openly.
2.Making fun of women in the bus.
3.While women getting down cleaners standing on the foot board.
4.If the ticket costs 9 rs not giving the change back.
5.When guys are seated in the ladies seat, these people wont have the guts to scold them and for the senior citizen seats also.

So the time has come to get more govt buses as there wont be any race while travelling

    Karan,
    Very true
U made a valid comment. You hit the right point. Because of the rowdy bus drivers we are not able to ride our bikes on the highway.
For this point I am with BJP

One bus driver assaulted for not giving way - all bus drivers protest. When bikers or pedestrians or others killed by these buses - why no one protests?

These bus drivers and bus staff need Whip treatment. They have no value for human life.Had any incidents of Mowing down bikers / Small vehicles / Pedestrians by rash and negligent driving had happened in any other parts of Karnataka... general public would be enough to teach them.
