Bangalore: J R Lobo demands fresh probe into church attacks in Assembly

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Jun 13: J R Lobo, MLA representing Mangalore (south) constituency, has demanded a fresh inquiry into the incidents of church attacks in the state.

Speaking in support of the motion of thanks moved in the assembly to the Governor’s address on Wednesday June 12, Lobo pointed out that the report submitted by Justice Somashekhara Commission of Inquiry, which went into these attacks and conducted a probe for a period of two years, is full of contradictions. He asserted that in view of these things, there was a strong case of holding fresh investigation into these incidents.

“The above report has not specifically said anything about the persons and organizations involved in the attacks, or politicians who instigated them. Moreover, none of the culprits have been punished. In such a scenario, how can the people have faith in the government?” he questioned.

Lobo said that the brand image which Mangalore once enjoyed, is now facing danger from incidents of moral policing, which have given rise a situation of apprehension and fear. He asked the government to find and root out people who are indulging in goondaism in the name of moral policing.

Stating that the previous government had saffronized the text books during its term, he demanded for the dissolution of text book committees, and to form them afresh by bringing together expert educationists.

Don't rely on percentages, they misguide sometimes. Look at this example:
There was a breaking news saying 100% female candidates failed in certain exam. The fact was that there was only single female appeared for that exam.!!and she failed, that makes 100%. What a bad name for females for the sake of one.

    Dear Nawaz,
Let me clarify on your comments to put the record straight.
I am not a spokesperson of any agency or entity. I am an individual, do not want to represent anybody (any community, party, group or faith) and try as far as possible to remain neutral. My comments on the subject in no way indicate that I am either taking side of somebody or speaking on behalf of them as you have alleged. I have firm opinion on the subject and I avoid speculation while writing. If my comments ‘seem’ something to anybody I cannot help them. I can only tell you that I am as much a ‘spokesperson’ as you are that is if you insist to hold the same position further.
I have not commented on Mr. Lobo in this topic. Did I say anywhere in my comments that
Mr. Lobo is nominated (not elected)
Mr. Lobo represents himself in Vidhan Sabha (not Mangalore)
Mr. Lobo is not doing his Job
No bad incident happened at all in Mangalore in the last 5 years
Offenders should not be punished and blah… blah…. blah….
I fully understand that some people lack the ability to comprehend the comments made by others. They simply READ the comment and react. I suggest that the comments should be read both ‘in letter and spirit’ in which case there is scope for a healthy debate on the matter.
This forum has provided opportunity for the individual to voice his opinion. Just because the supporters of one section are predominant in number, it that does not always mean that what they are advocating is right. Please have patience to hear the other voice (sensible) sometimes.

Hindu's are the most tolerable people, and I lived in a village of 50/50 Hindus/Christian ratio without any problem. It is an open reality that BJP and her political sisters used the great Hindu religion as a tool for political gain, thus created greater friction towards the minority religions, especially with the Muslim and Christian religions. When BJP came into power in 2008, in a single day, many Churches were attacked, and the highly literate state of Karnataka took the lead as the no 1 State in the Union with the highest number of attacks on the Christians and Churches. The street rowdies have nothing to do, so they took the dirty game plan of attacking the defenseless Christians and the BJP steered by Sri. Yeddyurappa simply blinked the eyes. Even though it was a painful bygone chapter of Karnataka history however, its inside truth and reasons must be brought to the light some day very soon.

Mr Lobo is elected by all communities irrespective of caste, creed & religion. During the attacks on religious places every community raised it's voice as a concerned citizen. The protection under the Indian constitution is not for a particular community. During BJP's rule there used be a lot of partisan politics which helped religious fanatics to come to centre stage. We understand that every religion has 2-5% fantics and they only oppose MR J R Lobo. Attacks on religious places is not 10 year's old it's the most recent incident. That's why there has to be a impartial inquiry without bringing in Hindu, Muslim & Christianity but by upholding the Constitutional spirit.

It is very true that J.R.Lobo won
the election because of Hindu votes.
98% of Hindus are good, peace loving
people. Only 2% are instigated of
the middle class Hindus are instigated or misguided by some upper class fundamentalists. Why did some youngsters attacked Churches?
If any conversions take place, there are police, there is law.Who
has given right to some communal
groups to attack innocent Christians or Muslims? Why did they
    spoiled the peace in Mangalore?
Thats why the truth should come out. And those fundamentalist leaders and the communal groups should be exposed. Also the public wants to know who were behind those church attacks? Who funded those goondas? Why the police officers and the police entered the churches?Who gave them authority? This is not revenge. This is upholding the law and costitution of our country.

But when we have other larger issues like city infrastructure, City planning, water crises, corrupt admin, declining industrial growth in the city, incrising crimes in the city, Education reforms, poverty in certain arieas, you should have given the priority first and then last you should have started it. Why should the public ( BJP supporters ) get nervous / anxious about a fresh inquiry by the CBI ? Is it because their masters will be subjected to the CBI probe and prosecuted too ? Lobo sir, your one wrong step broke the trust we had. Just remember it's not that you were voted by christians and won because of christian community. It's people from Mangalore who were really looking for a good leader across community to lead the city and bring back it's name and fame. Now you see the comments. one side of the community is saying it's right ( except few ) and one side of the community saying it's wrong ( except few ). You already proved the difference. If you are saying you are demanding investigation irrespective of the communcal thoughts, there were a lot of issues and incidents happened from past years. Will you be able to raise investigation a fresh for all those ? It will be a mess of the society. So, being normal on communal thoughts, what I suggest, let's close those bad memories and start a fresh. Both the sides should start feeling that those were stupid thoughts and incidents. Life and city can be beautiful if we ignore our communcal thoughts and have a good leader who will lead the city in a unique way, prove himself justifying the decision of Mangalorians was right. Sir, you have a lot more things to do to improve the city. Work on projects which will help both the communities. Also do something to improve the relationship between the communities. We all will support you and encourage you.

These were certainly planned attacks on a minority community who are generally soft targets. It should be deplored by all means and by everybody. I support a fresh inquiry not less than the CBI. Thanks to Mr.J.R.Lobo for raising the Church attack issue in the assembly. We want to know the truth.
Who attacked the churches?Which communal group they belonged to and which communal leaders were behind them and shielding them.Sometimes we need to dig the past. Postmortem of the church attack is very much required. The CM and the Home Minister should take up the issue seriously. Many Christian youngsters were arrested and tortured by Police officers like SP,DySp,SI,ASI and so on.Police men acted like beasts and beat innocent Women,Nuns,Elderly people mercilessly.Local MLA Yogish Bhat or Home Minister Late V.S.Acharya did nothing.Justice Somshekar commission was an eye wash by Yeddiyurappa and his Govt.
Those who say forgive and forget might not have experienced the brutuality of the police men (also immoral police men in disguise). When Sanjay Dutt was sent to jail, why not the church attackers and the leaders who instigated them?Peace loving Mangaloreans should support Mr.J.R.Lobo, irrespective of caste
and creed. People of Mangalore have
every right to know the TRUTH.There
should be a FULL STOP for immoral
    policing.
Only Justice Michael Saldanha and his team brought out some facts.
Now Home Minister should take the
initiative and give justice to the
    victims of Church attacks.

    Dear Mr Lobo,
You have rightly demanded a fresh probe into church attacks. A couple of commentators havent understood the agony undergone by several innocent youngsters who were victims. They have not gone through the Justice Somshekar Commission report. Some of the Law enforcing agencies have tortured our Priests, Nuns, ladies and youngsters. How can the guilty be allowed to go scot-free. It was not a small incident. It has shaken the confidence of all secular Mangaloreans irrespective of religion, caste and creed. This attack was reported on media worldwide and condemned. So let the new Karnataka Government conduct a fresh probe and bring out the truth .

Ever since Independence 100's of attacks have taken place on religious places only on Christian worshipers and its places. If proper investigations have been done & guilty punished, today nobody would have dared to attack religious places in Mangalore. There should be an independent enquiry by CBI so that the partisan witch hunting will not take place. It's in the interest of all communities that a certain ideology is not imposed on other communities. Minorities have become target of VHP/BD and other fundamental organisations of sangh Parivar. Christians have never thrown a stone on others. Let's all live peacefully by keeping the religious fanatics out.

It is time to forget what happened in 2008. There is no point digging the past and make an issue out of it. We should learn to forgive and forget rather than make it a fresh wound. If any cases are there against innocent people who protected our churches cases against them should be immediately withdrawn. Let us move forward in the right direction. I thought JR Lobo had some matured sense but regret to note that he has made the wound fresh. Mangalore and D.K. have many problems like Ration Card issue, traffic issue, bad roads, no footpaths, breakdown of infrastructure etc etc and these issues need to be addressed rather than we dig and open up dead wounds. Let us seek change and move in the right direction.

This is not about digging the past or revenge. Nor is it a Hindu vs Christian matter. Why have law at all if this is to be forgotten ? This is about crime and criminals. This is about justice for the victims and punishment for the guilty. Ignoring these would simply encourage people to repeat such offences in future and there would be no deterrent to prevent these crimes in the absence of the fear of punishment.
Developmental activities can also be initiated/carried on in parallel with the pursuit of justice. JRL is on the right track and doing the right thing. We wish him success.

But just imagine if there was an attack on any Hindu temple and the 'Garba Gudi' was destroyed - there would have been a bloodbath in Mangalore - But the Catholic community protested peacefully and the result was zero. Now since a secular administration has come up they must warn the 'Goondas' that such acts are not acceptable. Its nothing to do with JRL but without punishing the -ve elements you cannot convey a message ' Bisi madidhare matra Benne Karogod Sir'. My sincere question to the attackers on Morning Mist party, Icrecream Parlour, Mangala Bar etc...and those who still defend and justify such action, are themselves free from any vices. ( which are countless)

Preaching and exposing others is easy but practicing the morals is quite difficult. Sometime we are saints with paint.

I will watch Agree/Disagree and prepare my analysis on that.

What investigation and what will be the result. When TV channels were showing openly that some MLA’s watching Blue films, because of government support they made it wrong and no one was punished. In cricket betting Bindu/Kundra etc were caught and first they accepted and now they are telling they are innocent. Sreesant was caught with cash and girls now he is telling he is innocent and when he was released from the jail some stupid supporters gone to receive him. I don’t think a ordinary people will get justice in India if they investigate also. When CBI investigated Bajrangi’s case and when she was given punishment , the Government came to support her because she is from some community… so What justice you will get the ordinary people.

Salutations to J.R.Lobo for having picked up the issue of sacrilages on places of worship. These goons who had the support of the BJP Govt. MUST be booked and 'Goonda law' has to be applied. Justice Somshekar Commsn.was an eye wash just to complete the formality. In this case - the actual goondas must be booked and automatically the 'God Father' will come into the picture. JRL -keep up the heat and REOPEN the case. The Catholic community will never forget the assault at the Falnir adoration place of worship where the Holy Cross was broken and Bajrang Dal chief made negative comments on Lord Jesus Christ. They must pay the price for their acts which will be lesson for future troble mongers.

I agree with Mr Lobo as i am not personally against this step ,the Culprits should be punished but this issue is not a priority. The simple logic is If Mr Lobo aims for progress now and starts the work, for all this to complete it will take a few years and believe me people of Mangalore will never vote for BJP again.I saw many people felicitating MLAs for their Victory. I believe people of Mangalore should felicitate after the completion of 5 years for the service rendered by these MLAs. People are felicitating MLAs as if they are going to be in power for the rest of Indias future.Players in any game are felicitated only after winning the game. In elections the Game is of 5 years and not a day or a month.

As far as I am concerned, the revenage/vengence is not the solution. Let the culprits realize their own sins and reform.

Even God doesn’t forgive a unrepentant sinner
A person does wrong and is not repentant. Forgiving him has no meaning at all. Absolving his crimes will make him repeat his crime again and again for he knows he will go scot free. It is not only the matter of one religion but it is the cry for justice of many innocent youth, women and others. They have been beaten, tortured, harassed, denied their basic rights, and made to struggle for years with false court cases. but no action was taken on the culprits.

They had the patronage of govt and police. Has happened to the cry for justices of thousand and thousands protesters Mangalore and around the world gone unheard? the B J P govt’s inaction gave birth to incidents like pub attacks, moral policing, home stay attack, harassing and preventing school children going home on vacation, accusing christians of conversion, taking law in their hands, beating up and damaging vehicles transporting cattle. Most of these goons who were involved in church attacks have gone unpunished. If the were checked then, the name of Mangalore and India wouldn’t have been put to shame.

The Hindus are peace loving people and want to live in harmony [the election results proves that]But these fundamentalists gave Hindus a bad name. Why do we not realize this? Have we all forgotten what has happened? Should we forgive and forget all and wait for another problem to crop up? It is better to put the house in order before any development takes place.

Hi Valerian, Nobody is against preaching. I think nobody objects to one’s wilful conversion. Although it was wrong on the part of a certain fanatic group to attack places of worship (which is highly condemnable) whether it is a church or a makeshift prayer room, I must object to the practice of a certain group (sect) within Christianity, resorting to the practice of openly ridiculing the symbols of faith of other community to lure weak minded people into conversion. I have seen this happening in our district. What is this approach of preaching "my God is better than your God" "Your so called Gods and Goddesses were committing sins" etc. etc? Even a third rate salesman follows some business ethics and does not try sell his soap by ridiculing other brands. Majority within the Hindu community were feeling hurt, reading the publications sometimes thrown at their door steps. DID ANYBODY CARE? But when a small minority within the majority community took the wrong route to correct (?) the wrongdoings, it makes headlines and becomes a matter of world wide condemnation. Somebody writes in this forum, if a temple was attacked in Mangalore there would have been bloodbath. No Sir, It is not going to happen. SIMPLY, THERE IS NO UNITY AMONG HINDUS. There have been many instances (like Sharavu temple for one) where blood bath could have taken place (supposedly). Rest assured, majority Hindus are not volatile but please do not rub salt on the wound. I appreciate sensible readers to condemn BOTH wrongs together with a call for appropriate punishment to all those found guilty.

I was appalled to find him seeking blessings from Bishop, the very next day he won. Was it Bishop or was it people who brought him to power? Politicians should stop playing sectarian and religious games and invoke people sentiments, rather than that they need to concentrate on essential issues like the state of roads, road accidents, drainage system, water shortage, impoverished houses, education, poverty, child labour etc which have peaked in the city of mangalore.

The Hindutva forces, with Vishwa Hindu Parishad on the forefront, created a Hindutva mania all over India in the name of Ramjanam Bhoomi movement. The result of the promise made by them to have the historical Babri Masjid replaced by Ram Mandir was that around Rs 8,000 Crore were easily collected for the purpose. It is the beginning point of Hindutva terrorism throughout India.
During the past few incidents, in connection with the bomb blasts across the country there emerged the names of some people who in past were associated with Sangh Parivar. RSS was quick to disown them declaring that at the time of the incident they were not its members. It is pointed out that these extremists had intentionally distanced themselves from RSS under a plan to ensure that the image of RSS is not affected if their terrorism is exposed.
It seems that the separation of some hard core Hindutvas from Sangh Parivar, their formation of sovereign outfits and then the subsequent attack & blasts directly on minorities was a part of their master plan. The past incidents in and around Mangalore is the visible proof that Hindutva terrorism is increasing gradually under this plan of internal cooperation of RSS. Now the time has come to nail RSS for Hindutva Terrorism and it as a terrorist organisation.

The way he has started his journey as a MLA from our constituency is praise worthy. For any sustained development in any area we require investments from the Private sector. For investments to flow we require sustained Peace in the Area. Hence first and for most thing Government has to strengthen the Law and order situation in the area by punishing the Guilty who unleashed terror in the name of Religion. Our MLA has taken the right step by raising his voice in the assembly against the way previous Government wrapped up the whole issue and pushed the matter under the carpet. People may call it as digging the old grave, but this is required to clean up the muck the previous Government has left and to strengthen the Law and order system in our District. Otherwise no sane investor shall invest for the fear of Communal disharmony in our District. Hence sustained Peace in the Area is a Prelude to any Development.

There is no offence in talking this issue in assembly. But in the same time He should speak about present needs of the Mangalore and future requirement of Mangalore. MLA’s should analyze the Past and use that experience to present and future development. But here Mr. Lobo looks like sitting on past only. Or news coverage is not complete. I am sure when I say this my fellow Christians will agree. Let me know if my suggestions are wrong please.
As our dear hindu brother and sisters and some of our our christian brothers and sisters, suggest yes as christians we shall forgive. Thats what Jesus taught us to do. But getting out the truth and knowing it is the right thing to do. I support the demand from JR Lobo, so that all of us will know the truth.
We all know that the earlier probe was just a eye wash. So it is good we have a new probe. But what needs to be done here is not a congress or BJP probe but an independent probe by an agency who is not anybody'd puppet.
So....lets all forgive the church attackers and let God be the judge, but a new fresh probe is the need of the hour

Exactly you said, only you knows who is doing coversion, BUT your head-less followers dont know the difference between Catholics and Bible Society, all you need is give your followers little education. In every relegion there are many sects.
We can not fire whole India to get rid of bad people, but need to find out who are the trouble makers.

just for your reference, what happend after killing of late Smt Indira Gandhi, Hindus killed so many innocent Sikhs because of One or two persons.

regarding Converion, there is law of land exits. If some one doing coversion forcefully and inducements, then have to take action as per law.

therefore it is your duty (presume you have some education) to educate your esteemed followers.

Then others can also demand for many commissions for many social reasons for which they are suffering in the name of so called secularism. What it is the use of another commission report? By the time report comes to Assembly for discussion, may be we will have another Government and they may not agree for the outcome and order for another commission. You must have heard legal term: "FOUGHT IN SELF DEFENSE"
This what some Parishioners did, (Church goers) when Lathi wielding hoodlums, attacked the Churches and parishioners!
Then the Police were mute spectators!
BUT When Parishioners repulsed the attackers, the Police became active to arrest and beat Parishioners!
When somebody comes and attack your household, your defensive action is not intended to attack, so it is not attack!
Knocking legal door for justice is also not revenge. Instead tolerating injustice is as good as encouragement!

Anger against injustice is good if it it in the interest of peace n harmony of the society. Mahatma Gandhi went encountered racism, exploitation in his youthful days got ANGRY and his anger is justified. It motivated him to fight for freedom of India. He fought for injustices such as inequality practiced in Indian society for ages. He called backward people as Harijan. What an enlightened soul Gandhi was.

Church attack case is still not brought to a logical conclusion. In the "eyes" of law and constitution, the investigation report doesnt fix people and organisations responsible for attack on Mangalorean Catholic Churches. The wounds are not healed if perpetrators are not brought to justice. Digging the old grave is important to find out root causes of attacks as well as people responsible for such heinous crimes. The elements of such attacks are still very much alive and roaming freely. Now they have gone into hibernation mode because their patrons are now lost power. These same elements will be active once BJP comes to power, and the story of moral policing, church attacks will go on. The investigating agency led by Somashekara also must be booked and fixed for not delivering justice. Commission was just behind victims, but was soft on attackers n patrons. Somashekara must be legally tried as well for not doing constitutional duty.

There was no single voice from Christian community to demand for justice during BJP tenure. I wonder what present home minister K.J.George was doing as an MLA that time. As an MLA, he has responsibility to stand up for truth and fight against injustice. I do not think present government will reopen investigations into church attacks because if the do so, then RSS and other sister organisations will divide society and create further problems.

It is a tricky situation when the government lacks will power to deliver justice. If anti-social evils who beat up women, attack on faith are rooted out, Mangalore can develop on all fronts.

Now, situation is, people outside twin districts (Mangalore & Udupi) look at our districts in different angle due to misdeeds carried out by communal forces. So, our district's image is tainted. When the fear of illegal activities disappears from people's mind (mainly businessmen, investors), automatically the growth rate increases.

To your kind info, German Govt still following and prosecuting NAZI war criminals irrespective of their age ( they may be above 80-90 years ),
It is not just bcoz of revenge politics but Govt want teach lesson that new generation that not commit heinous crime against humanity

In South Africa ,in 1993 Newly democratically elected Govt constituted TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISION under Bishop Desmond Tutu.
Its not just bcoz of revenge politics, but Govt want to teach that every elected representative should not commit RACIAL DISCRIMINATION and Crime against Humanity.

Here also J.R.Lobo doing same. His demand is justified. Those who committed sacrilegious should punished such a way that hear afterward Politicians should not instigate/commit/support Moral Policing, Attack on Holy places, School, Orphanage etc.

Once there was a serpent living in a house. People in the house knew about it and thought it was harmless. One day it bit the grandmother and she died.
Now should the people in the house think that their grandmother is dead and nothing can be done about it, let us forget the serpent, or think of eliminating the serpent from the house for it might bite another member of the house..
It is your choice to decide...

The initiative u are taken is highly appreciable and the criminals must be given harsh treatment.

Nothing wrong in demanding for an re-enquiry. If the demand is accepted, it will be done by an investigating body not by JRL. So comments advising JRL to concentrate on developmental works are superfluous.

Mr. Lobo, tell people how you'll focuss on development of Mangalore. Keep pressing for justice for Hindus, Muslims and Christians. You would be a fool not to demand justice for if there is proof that previous BJP came to power and stayed in it by instigating communal strife. People need to know the truth. Even Nelson Mandela wanted truth and reconciliation commission to find out who were involved in atrocities. Only knowing the truth we can say we forgive them. Ignorance and fear is no solution. As a leader you have to stand up for what is right and not bow down to pressures which unwanted elements may try to press on you. Reopening old wounds would only create more animosity amongst the generations which have beleived tha you can make Mangalore a better place where no matter what age, sex, nationality, race or religion you could live peacefully in co-existence. Do you wish that people start poiniting fingers at each other again?
Wakeup folks..we live one life. lets capitalize on making the best of it first for others and then for us. Believe me, this will change the perception that unfortunately has gotten ingrained into our DNA these last few years!!!

While going through first few comments itself i could feel that Lobo has failed in his first step itself. If we wanted the communal politics or any such mess ups, we wouldn't have chosen you sir. We wanted you to close such communal issues and focus on Mangalore to bring it to it's original shape and dignity. Instead of talking on those necessary measures required on top riority you went and started talking about past incidents, revenges, representing yourself from a communcal group... really disappointing. I agree there were a lot of issues or political plays played in past. But now it's time to revamp completely and look in a different view. Just consider it as a whole Mangalore community and see what best you can contribute to the city as such. then only we will get back the trust and confidence we had on you Lobo, really. Stop doing anything fousing on any of the communcal group... I am iterating... any of the communal group... be a representative of whole Mangalore city.

Mr. JR Lobo MLA for Mangalore and also note that he represent his community too. You are well aware that previous govt covered the Church attacks by booking false cases againt those who went protect the churches during the attacks !
The old wound will be there till we found the root cause that that and then only we can heal and prevent next !!

As of this date either previous govt or current govt not found or caught who was behind this attacks,
but the way you are opposing now for fresh probe it indicates YOU ARE ONE OF THE ATTACKERS. the probing agencies should take note of this.

just for your guidence whenever, whoever attacked the any places of worship never survived becuase peoples prayer pwoer is stroger than attacker.
just see what happend to previous home minister on his time the attacks happened, what happend to pervious CMs who have blindly supported the attack, please see what happens to our favourite NAMO, is going against against his own Guru!!

In India perpetrators(Church attack/Mosque attack/moral policing etc)were set Scot- free for the reason unknown. This will again motivate to repeat the criminal activities. If rule of land not respected, is it called democracy?A organized, well deliberated CHURCH ATTACKS ACROSS KARNATAKA had no issue of previous govt!!Is it not state sponsored then? What kind of commission constituted? Why such toothless commission constituted? To exonerate Govt and it's Sangh parivars?

Hundreds of defenders of place of worships were sent to jail instead sending those who attacked the place of worships! What kind of justice is this?Moral policing going on unabated especially in twin districts with mute and lukewarm response from security officials. Siddu CM of Karnataka, taken these issues before election to deal firmly if voted to power but so far nothing has been done. Those who break the law may be from CONGRESS OR BJP OR any individual from any class should dealt with iron fist of law.In this context Mr JR Lobo,MLA's plea is appropriate and those concerned should not term this plea as RAKING.WE DEMAND CM TO DEAL THIS ISSUE WITH HUMANITARIAN CONSIDERATION AND REMIND YOUR PROMISE FOR A ACTION...

If investigation is to be held on church attacks, then investigation should start from the point on why was the church attacked and not from who did the attack. Instead on blaming the sanghparivar, the minority community should understand that it was a retalliation from hindu's for various religious conversions which were going on in full pledge during that time.
