Ajman: GMC Hospitals celebrate Int'l Nurses' Day

Ajman, Jun 13: Recently, the GMC Hospitals in UAE celebrated International Nurses' Day 2013. The theme that International Council of Nurses chose for this year’s event was  ‘Closing the Gap : The Millennium Development Goals : 8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1’.  This slogan is intended to be a countdown to 2015 with an emphasis on the health related goals.
 
On the eve of the International Nurses Day celebrations, 2103 GMC Hospitals celebrated the grand event in three segments. 

In the first segment, the nurses were administered with a professional oath during the lamp lighting ceremony which was graced by Professor Gita Ashok Raj, provost of the Gulf Medical University.

Later, in the second segment the nursing department in association with health communication division organized a continuing nursing education program on ‘Vision, Innovation and Implementation in Nursing Practice’. Medical experts deliberated on various topics related to the event. Dr Kavita Bhalekar – NMC Hospital, Dubai spoke on the ‘Scope and benefits of nursing informatics. Dr Meenu Cherian, academic director, GMC Hospital, Ajman emphasized on the ‘Importance of CME in Nursing’.  Abhi Thomas Ayoor, department of nursing, GMC hospital spoke on the topic of ‘The future role of nursing in health promotion’. Professor Jayadevan Sreedharan, assistant director - Center for Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation, GMU lectured in detail on ‘The research methodology for nurses’.

Around 100 nurses from all over UAE participated in the event which was accredited by MoH for 6 CME hours.

In the third and final segment, the annual nurses cultural festival was held in the campus of Gulf Medical University whereby thenurses from GMC Ajman, Sharjah, and Fujairahdemonstrated their talents by hosting a special cultural show in singing, dance and drama.

The chief guest of the gala event was Dr Manvir Singh Walia, medical director of GMC Hospital. Professor Gita Ashok Raj and Dr Prashant Hegde felicitated the nurses with awards for the Best Ward, Best Unit Incharge, Best Unit Nurses, Best Care Assistant and Best Medical Orderly Assistant. The Best Nurse award was bagged by GMC Medical & Dental Specialty Centre, Sharjah while the Best Unit Nurse and Best Care Assistant Award was bagged by GMC Hospital, Fujairah.
