Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, Jun 15: In yet another case of smuggling, a passenger was arrested by the customs officials Mangalore International Airport here on Saturday June 15, on charges of smuggling saffron worth Rs 15 lac.

The accused has been identified as Abdul Safeeer (23), a resident of Kasargod.

He arrived by the Jet Airways flight from Dubai on Saturday morning.

Safeer was passing through the green channel at the customs, when the official grew suspicious about him and checked his luggage. Sources said that saffron packets were hidden inside four diaper packets, which were covered with clothes.

The total weight of the seized saffron is 15 kg, valued at Rs 15 lac.

On interrogation, Safeer said that he did not know whom the saffron was for, and that a person was supposed to recognise him by the colour and pattern of his shirt and take the bag from him.

He is expected to be produced in court.

Further investigations are on.

I would like to suggest Airport commissioner to install CCTV cameras on CUSTOM OFFICERS and watch how much smuggling is allowed because of bribes and how Mangalore custom targetting single community passengers and the how they harrased the passengers of a particular place.

I also would like to suggest the Airport authority that like every passenger is throughly checked by metal detector when boarding a plane, like that every passenger should be pass through the same metal detector after they have disembarked.

Targetting a certain community people will only result in the diversion of attention of the authorities from other people. The other people are getting free hand to smuggle what they want.

Safron is not banned in INDIA..because of its price, it is prohibited from bringing in large quantities while you are coming from abroad (commercially you can import)..its rare & very difficult to cultivate.hence, one of the costliest herbs in the world..Now a days mainly produced in spain, greece & Iran..Before militancy, Kashmir was famous for saffron cultivation in INDIA..

If he cross Talapady then he will be safe for lifetime coz the secular govts. are ruling Kerala and most importantly he belongs to minority community. So no one Kerala will think of acting against him. People in Ktaka are fortunate that their Govt.s are not gone to this extent.
