Mangalore, Jun 16: The newly elected MLAs and ministers were felicitated on Sunday June 16 at Loyola hall here on Sunday June 16 during a convention organized by SCDCC Bank in association with Navodaya Grama Vikasa Charitable Trust.

Forest and district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai, health minister U T Khadar, urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, fisheries minister Abhaychandra Jain, IT-BT minister S R Patil, and primary and secondary education minister Kimmane Ratnakar were felicitated, along with MLAs J R Lobo, Vasanth Bangera, Shakuntala Shetty, Mohiuddin Bava, Gopal Poojary and Pramod Madhwaraj.

Rajya Sabha member Oscar Fernandes did the honours as well as inaugurated the convention by lighting the lamp.

Oscar in his presidential address said the programme will encourage the newly elected representatives to work better. "If our district has to progress in a greater way, then more importance should be given to youth, women and labourers, and in this regard Rajendra Kumar and his team have been doing great work, especially in making women independent," he said.

"Our district is ahead compared to other districts, but we should not stop here but move forward," Oscar said, assuring his support to all the elected members in their good work.

Kimmane Ratnakar said, "The honour bestowed on us today has not only made us happy but also increased our responsibility. If we do not work for the welfare of the people, then all these honors make no sense."

"Our country is vast comprising people of different faiths, religions and castes, but what is important is that all should think in terms of the betterment of the country, as this is the only way it will progress," he added, assuring that the newly-elected ministers and MLAs will perform their duty to the best of their abilities.

On the 4,200-crore fund sanctioned by CM Siddaramaiah to distribute rice to the poor at Re 1, the minister said no other CM in the history of Karnataka has so far done so much for the poor.

Expressing his happiness on being elected for the second time as district in-charge minister, Ramanath Rai said the district has good name in the co-operative sector. "When we think of co-operative society here, the first name that comes to my mind is that of Rajendra Kumar, who has helped women in a great way through self-help groups."

"There are several people suffering in society, it is our duty to render our support and in this regard co-operative society plays a major role," he added.

"Politics should not enter the co-operative sector as it will affect growth. I am extremely proud of Dakshina Kannada district for its achievements in various sectors especially in banking as it has given four national banks," said SR Patil.

"SCDCC president Rajendra Kumar has made a vast contribution to the society by showing needy people how to grow," said Patil, expressing a wish to see many more good works by Rajendra Kumar in future.

"The city also has the potential to become an IT hub after Bangalore. In Bangalore, there are more than 3,000 IT companies which generate huge revenue. I wish more companies to come in this district," added Patil.

"One of the major projects on the anvil in DK is the 3D planetarium to be set up in Pilikula. The tender work is in progress. DK district should become a role model to other districts," he said.
