Bangalore: School children to get free milk from July 1

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Jun 17: The state government has come up with an initiative to tackle malnutrition among the children through a novel scheme. Chief Minister (CM), Siddaramaiah, has announced that the government will be providing milk to all the school children studying from first to tenth standard in government schools, beginning July 1 this year.

The CM said that the government is committed to the task of tackling the issue of malnutrition among the children, apart from providing quality education to them. He announced that beginning from July 1, the students of government schools will be provided with 150 ml milk free of cost.

It may be recalled that the officials of Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) had expressed their inability to handle increased collection of milk from all over the state subsequent to the announcement of increased subsidy for milk supplied by dairy farmers to it. KMF is also faced with the problem of marketing stock of butter and milk powder held by it. The CM said the scheme to supply milk to the students has been introduced with the aim of helping KMF to handle this issue.

He also said that the government has undertaken the initiative of filling up vacant posts of teachers and lecturers in government schools and colleges, for improving the quality of education being imparted there. He asserted that there is no question of compromising with the quality of education.

The CM told his legislators that the mandate of the people was towards transparence in administration over corruption. “The people wanted clean governance over corruption-ridden BJP government. I have instructed by cabinet colleagues to provide clean administration as per the expectations of the people. It is the need of the hour to be honest, towards achieving the above goal. I expect my ministerial colleagues to fall in line with this advice,” he stated.

Minister for food and civil supplies department, Dinesh Gundu Rao, noted that the system of running fair price shops has lot of loopholes. He said one of the problems is that thousands of BPL cards are in the hands of ineligible persons. He said he has taken up a plan under which he is optimistic of ensuring that this problem is tackled in its entirety within three months.

Given the corruption levels in govt, I have the following issues:
1)Quality of milk reaching the innocent kids and the quality control responsibility till actual consumption. How is adulteration going to be checked?
    2) Being a highly perishable product what is the govt plan to keep milk fresh and not get spoilt? Do they have plans for fixing expiry labels on bottles or vessels?
    3) How and who is going to boil the milk?
    4) How are other logistics going to be taken care of?
It is all fine announcing big big plans just because there is excess milk just like there is excess grains, but we have seen failures in numerous logistical issues in actual implementation.

There is going to be a logistic problem in this scheme. Sounds good but not practical. No parent has ever demanded milk in school for their children that too without boiling it.

    Mr. Mathias,

Dairy milk is pasteurized, cooled, treated and then packed. Which means it is boiled, cooled, fat-balanced and then packed. If we are in habit of drinking cold water, there is no harm in drinking cold milk as well but children are not susceptible to it, they develop throat infection.

What is more risky is keeping milk under warm environment for a longer time than permitted because then the bacteria causes its curdling.

Do our children look under nourished ? Instead KMF should export milk / milk products like Ghee etc to other states. Too much of calcium is also bad for children. Transporting and distributing it in school too will be a problem. Its best otherwise to give them the sachet when they leave school in the evening for home.

Siddu being hailing Kuruba poor community knows the difficulty of what is mal nutrition. Instead of wasting this milk due to over production, better serve this mild to poor govt. run school children.

In India above 30% live below poverty line and surprised to note on TV channels, in some states the rice, wheat grains are rotting in the storehouse But govt. machinery is not willing to distribute to the poor Indians.

In Northern Karnataka, people are suffering in malnutrition. Coastal DK, Udupi districts, we are blessed with better facility. That is why some may comment are not in favour for this scheme.

I wholeheartedly support Siddu's scheme of giving School children to get free milk.

Milk is Susceptible for contamination and infectious more than anything unlike Rice. There were reports of children getting food poisoned and dying after eating Govt sponsored Mid day meal.In a hurry to score brownie points we hope the Govt takes care of the quality of Milk supplied and the hygiene in which it is served. Its good if the Govt has plans to increase the Milk production in the state thus bennifitting the dairy owners or the Milk producers & consumers but it may be a boomerang if this project proves burden to Middle/poor class at the end of the day as Milk by itself next to Petrol is in inflation trend in our country. Almost every month they increase the price of the same.

Milk is a product that needs to be handled by maintaining certain temperature, else, the bacteria causes curdling. Now, children can't be served chilled milk if we are to believe that dairy-packed pure milk will be served. If we are to believe that warm milk will be served by mid-day meal serving staff, surely purity of the milk will be a distant dream.

Secondly, only government school children will get this service. Imagine how many children go to government schools ? Does it mean that children who go to private schools have no malnutrition ?

Now that surplus supply is there and they find difficulty in handling the stock, why shouldn't the price be reduced instead ? Common man can afford milk, children will be less deprived of vital nutrients ?

Though it is welcome move by Siddu in poor students’ point of view but this is nothing but tackling the KMF problem for excess supply of milks by farmers due to recent increase in subsidy. How smart our CM is!!!! And the problem starts now, like how the supply chain will work? Who will be responsible for distribution for free milk in Government Schools? Do they provide with freezer to store the milk packets properly? Do we have uninterrupted power supply to keep the freezer running for 24x7x365 days? All these problem exists just because, we are known for creating problem rather than implementing Government policies especially in Kar-Nataka particularly in Coastal Region!! Because of BJP Government!!!! Oh Sorry…. They are no more ruling Kar-Nataka………….. And then the statement comes.... Pls correct us if we are making Mistakes!!!

Dear Bollu, your comments are tollu as usual. Please remember that Sardar Patel was a hardcore congi and not a saffron fundamentalist. He was a diehard follower of Gandhi and did not wear a khaki chaddi. It is strange that today your fundu leaders and all you saffron followers are praising Sardar Patel as your hero, when in reality you do not have any heroes. Your Veer Savarkar sold himself to the British and another one of your heroes Nathuram Godse murdered the father of the nation. Seems that you are slowly becoming experts in distorting history. If Sardar Patel had lived for another 10 years he would have wiped out the RSS for sure.

My immediate concern is, its too risky for the children in government schools given the present hygiene conditions. there has to be drastic changes in supervision.
