Udupi, Jun 17: “Udupi district hospital is lagging behind. For only name’s sake, the taluk hospital has turned into a ZP hospital but it has been not been promoted to a higher status. When we see the staff, wards, and beds, it looks like the Taluk Hospital,” said surgeon Anand Nayak.

“When Udupi taluk was turned into a district in 1997, Ajjarakadu hospital was promoted to district hospital. But the hospital, till today, has not got the facilities of the district hospital. The district hospital requires a minimum of 250 beds, an operation theatre, and a male ward. There is the necessity for additional staff,” he added.   

“The present hospital consists of only 124 beds and 124 staff are working there. To be called a district hospital, it requires 40 medical officers but here there are only 21 doctors who are carrying out their duty. Even the district hospital requires 50 nurses, but in this hospital there are only 26 nurses. There is a need for paramedical staff, but cleaning is done on a contract basis,” added Nayak.
