Udupi Bishop creates History – Appoints a Nun as Financial Administrator

by Fr Chetan

Udupi, Jun 17 : The bishop of the newly erected Udupi diocese, Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo created history by appointing Sr. Lydia Mendonca, a religious nun of the Congregation of Sisters of Bethany as the Treasurer of the diocese.

This is the first instance in the Church of Karnataka where a woman religious has been appointed for the highly responsible service.

Like the other services in the Church, the service of Financial Administrator too was held by priests of the diocese till now.  By appointing a woman religious, Bishop Gerald has begun a welcome new tradition which would go long way in acknowledging the worth of women in the Church.   The oath – taking ceremony was held in the Bishop’s chapel on 17th June.

College of Consultors constituted

To help the diocesan administration and to advise the diocesan bishop on various matters, a College of Consultors was constituted in the diocese of Udupi.  The oath – taking ceremony of the same was held on  17th June, 2013 at the Bishop’s House, Udupi.  With this the process of constituting participatory structures in the diocese is completed

The College of Consultors:

Msgr. Baptist Menezes, Vicar General
Fr. Valerian Mendonca, Chancellor
Fr. Stany B. Lobo, Rector, Milagres Cathedral
Fr. Stany Tauro, Parish priest, Shirva
Fr. Joswey Fernandes, Parish priest, Belle
Fr. Roque D Souza, Parish priest, Udyavar
Fr. Denis D’Sa, Parish priest, Kuntalnagar
Fr. Charles Noronha, Parish priest, Palimar

Great decision by the Bishop to appoint a Nun as the Financial Administrator. It is indeed getting too late for the Christian Churches to make a U-turn in their age old traditions of keeping the women aloof from Church's business and spiritual roles.
