Mangalore, Jun 17: There are requests from some people to convert forest land into agricultural land, and at the same time there is also opposition to this move. The government plans to take over agricultural land in the forest reserve areas, but a final decision will be taken only after considering both views and keeping in mind the conservation of forests, said forest, ecology and environment minister Ramanath Rai, addressing reporters at meet-the-press here on Monday June 17.

"The previous government had permitted the diversion of Netravati River from Sakleshpur. But if this is done, there will be fear of reduction in ground water level," he said.

He further informed that the union government has given green signal to the widening of stretch of highway between Hassan and Mangalore to four lanes, for which a Japanese company has come forward to complete the work. Within five years the road will be built, he said.

“Proposal has been submitted to the union government to make Mangalore City Corporation a Bruhath Mangalore City Corporation, so as to get more funds sanctioned for development. Hasire Usiru project has been proposed for the development of the district along with forest conservation. On June 25, a state level workshop will be organized for officers to discuss complete development of the district,” he said.

A task force will be formed to oversee all developmental projects related to the district, and the same will be discussed during a special meeting. "A new forest committee will be formed in every district. Already title deeds have been provided under the Forest Law for those residing in forests. The tribals living in the Western Ghats forests from three generations have also been given title deed and soon others will also get," he said.

“People in this district are well educated. During my political tenure, I have received full support from media and the public. I hope this support will continue in the future and equilibrium between government and people is maintained,” he added.

It is a very good foresighted thinking. They should start planning the infra-structure now itself like Outer and Inner Ring Roads around Mulki, Bajpe and Ullal. In line with Coimbatore, systematically industrialise the region, keeping the local raw materials in mind. Make a master plan for the twin district of Mangalore and Udupi to implement them by next 20-30 years. In future road conjunction will be big issues hence initiate preparing master plan on road widening, multi-storey car-parks and public-toilets as early as possible.
    Jai Hind!

In India Development graph of the city is like this.Initially clean and green village slowly develops into filthy and dusty towns where people do not have toilets.Waste is littered every where.Drainage flows on to the roads The panchayath will not have resources to set this right. This town grows into city adding more area of filthy roads and litter every where. Now there will be some cleaning by muncipality but still resources not enough. The result of this is lowering of standards of living but only land sharks and Mafia benifiting out of this.We need real substance and international standards in our Bruhath Corporations.Mere slogans only make us backward class.

    Mr.Rai,
We do not need additional Bruhat name for our City Corporation.Instead try to give a face lift to the MCC,by providing better seating arrangements to the staff, maintain the office clean, get rid of the old junk dusted files etc. Please get involved with Oscar Fernandes, to give us a 4 lane high way from Hassan to Mangalore. Please oversee that U give a permanent solution to get our Shiradi Ghat, potholes free. We do not want to see the potholes r re appearing year after year on Shiradi Ghat. Please see that U do not do sub standard work,by filling the potholes with dust.

Mangalore Hassan Road will be done Japanese Company....!!!??? Do we have less competent companies to do this work...!!!???? Although I am against this, sometimes I feel sorry for our overbridge construction works. The look itself makes us to avoid passing over it. All over the world construction companies employ Indian Engineers and Indian labourers and they can construct a neat and clean work. Why our Indian construction (Not all) companies do the same...!!!???

All our shouting from roof top to save our clean Mangalore / Stop breeding of huge apartments without proper infrastructure / Have concern for environment / Do not divert our dear Nethravathi will not be heard by politicians ( which ever party they belong ) they are quick to start working to recover their investment.

We are paying price for the faulty democracy where more and more required to be in politics. People judge politicians by what religion/caste they belong.

We need to hope against hope.

People if Mangalore becomes Brihat Managaluru Mahanagara Palike(BMMP),Mangalore will become hell, already we have reached half way there as from past 1 year i think almost 30 Huge flats came up in and around mangalore,I would like to tell our MLA's and MP's and even Ramanath Rai here that they know how worst Bangalore is,And do they really want to turn mangalore into a dense Garbage Concrete Forest were people there Breathe Fresh CO2 Carbon Dioxide every second and losing their life !!!! Fine MP's and MLA's have loads of money to get operated if they fall ill,Just look at Middle and Lower Class people ,They hardly can bare fees for an operation. One more thing is, when city becomes "Brihat" people from outside the city/state will flood into our Clean Mangalore and they spoil it and go,Do we need this?and there won't be any room for Mangaloreans in Mangalore,& the scene which we are currently seeing in bangalore.

Many problems arise like Water,Health,Fuel,Quality food,Traffic,Transportation,Education,Cleanliness etc

Its easy to turn mangalore into a (BMMP) but later our generation will suffer, because of deforestation,There is some limit in making money,Please think twice and consider different sources that might hinder mangalore's overall growth.

Looking ahead to see a Clean and Safe Mangalore,Where we can leave in peace,Not a Brihat tension place.

Make Mangalore Greater Mangalore, with Concrete Roads with out footpaths. IF at all road is there only for the few sq Mts of the actual city, COllect cess at the same rate from every where, There are bridges with out foot paths. Mangalore has no even terrain, Concrete has been laid everywhere with out proper gutters , seems like they wish to see how much inundation takes place, They will plan for two years work for two years then they will leave incomplete work for the next five years. Irrespective of parties all are useless ...

Each Apartment which comes up has to leave space for setback , road access etc... Why not City Corporation and Govts make a rule that all apartment have 2 or 3 midsized tree (like sita phala, ckikko etc) and 1 big size tree (like Jackfruit etc) plants planted on completing of the apartment. This must be compulsory and monitored for 3 or 4 years that they are take care. No.of plants or greenery around the apartment should depend on the size of the Apartment or the House. House planning should have a garden or plants area marked :)

    BROTHER PUTHRAN,
I SEE REAL PAIN AND RESONANCE IN YOUR COMMENT.
I HOPE THE MINISTER READS ALL THIS STUFF WE WRITE.
I AM OF THE OPINION THAT INSTEAD OF GOING BRIHAT TRY TO SUSTAIN THE CORPORATION AS IT STANDS.
    MANGALORE HAS TO REMAIN KUDLA.
WE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN TRYING TO MAKE IT BOMBAY OR BANGALORE.
INFRASTRUCTURE CAN EITHER BE CONSERVED OR DEVELOPED AT A COST.
BUT AT WHAT COST AND WHY...???

When URBAN area is getting over congested and over populated and civic authorities are unable cop-up with the pressure falling on existing infrastructure
Then there arises a need to expand SUB-URBAN area.
In such scenario, it is necessary for the development authority to obtain feasibility report from competent institutions to avoid unplanned developments at a later stage!
Therefore we see, Most of the Suburban areas are better planned.
