Bangalore: JD(S), BJP oppose bus fare hike, Revanna for transport privatisation

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Jun 17: The Opposition JD(S) and BJP have strongly opposed the State Government’s decision to hike bus fares of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation.

The JD(S) leader H D Revanna was so scathing in his attack on the State Government’s decision on the bus fare hike that he demanded that the city and state-level transport undertakings must be privatized if the KSRTC and BMTC could not be run effectively on “no-profit-no loss terms.”

Revanna said hike in bus fares would increase burden on middle class and poor families and urged the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to withdraw the hike in the interest of the public.

The State run corporation were established on the motto of providing service and not for making profit. He urged the Government to privatise KSRTC and BMTC if it found difficult to operate them, Revanna said.

The BJP opposition leader in the Legislative Council D V Sadananda Gowda, who is also the former BJP chief minister, also vehemently opposed the bus fare hike and contended that it would impose a heavy burden on the poorer sections and middle classes.

Revanna also criticised the Government’s proposal to hike cattle feed by Rs 2,000 per tonne.

Even after a month, he said the Government had not implemented its decision on increasing the incentive for milk from Rs 2 to 4 per litre and criticized the chief minister for trying to take the people for a ride through empty promises.

The authorities have taken away additional income supposedly promised to the milk producers by increasing the cattle feed price.

Sadananda Gowda said the chief minister should have taken the decision to hike bus fares after wider consultations with parties and various organisations.

The BJP leader threatened that his party would launch a state-wide protest if the Congress Government drops programmes launched by the previous government.

Gowda urged the Government to restore supply of subsidised rice to above poverty line families.

To ensure adequate quantity of rice to BPL families at one rupee per kg from next month, the Government has decided to stop supply of rice to 34 lakh APL card holders, he alleged.

The Congress government has proposed to reverse the BJP government’s decisions on creation of new taluks and distribution of bi-cycles to high school students.

The BJP leader opposed the Government’s decision to turn down bifurcation of Bangalore University.

Internal differences in the Congress party had tied the hands of the chief minister and several leaders had already criticised his style of functioning, including former ministers D K Shivakumar, Motamma, former speaker Ramesh Kumar and Congress veteran and MLC M V Rajasekharan, he said.

“It seems that Congress leaders are preparing a ground for transfer of power from Siddaramaiah,” the former BJP chief minister said.

Every Labour and workingmen is demanding 400 to 500 rupees per day then why trouble to pay the fare hike? The bus drivers and conductors cannot get proper jobs once they retire so let them hike the fare and have pension facilities for them.
The BJP leaders find it difficult to sit on the floor, how they can sit in a KSRTC Bus? See pic-3.They just want a issue to take a break after attending the session where they cannot make any noise due to the BJP number is less than 40 who attend there. They want to show up at public because public is not going to see them.
There should be hike in bus fare so that others hikes are compensated. Why the tax payers money should be spent on state run buses. Let them implement correct fare to cover the cost and run the system with no profit and no loss.

Ashok - in your period you had promised atleast 8 to 10 times that KSRTC buses will be introduced in Coastal area in all routes within 6 months but you never kept your promise, Why ? Did Private Bus owners Mafia give fund to your party ?
Revanna is pitching for Privatization, not for the benefit of Public, but because he has his own plans to start Private Bus Company in Old Mysore area,.

Revanna is talking about privatization of Bus service !.
Mr. Revanna ask the people of Coastal Karnataka about their horrible experience in the hands of Private Bus operators.
We the people of D.K. & Udupi want all routes to be nationalized and taken over by KSRTC and kick out all private bus operators.

During BJP rule, transport minister Ashok used to come to Mangalore/Udupi every six months and give public statement that all coastal routes will be nationalized within 3 months and private buses will be stopped. This way he used to blackmail and collect 'Suit Case' full of currencies from the Bus-Owners' lobby and forget about privatization for next six months.

When fuel prices go up raising transport fares inevitable!
What the protestors think? Give subsidy to transportation as well?
Problem is with ever increasing crude oil price!
Problem is with imbalance in infrastructure development viz a viz ever growing commuting population!
Transport requirement has increased, be it for work, studies, market, celebrations, visit, prayers, outings and many more so there is enormous demand for fuel.
To curb the dependency on fuel, Either we have to develop alternative mode of transport like, railways, tramp etc. which runs with electricity and simultaneously straiten the Road network to earn fuel efficiency!

My friends from BJP are having difficulties in sitting on the floor/road.....

Bus fare increase is perhaps not a good decision but if Government subsidises it then people who dont travel in bus need to pay for it....tough choice to make.

India need to produce more crude oil and gas domestically and be less dependendent of imports...but this should be motivated by national interest not by intent of allowing Ambanis to make huge profits.....
