Mangalore: Second edition of Mandd Sobhann 'Kalakulotsav' on Jun 22, 23

Mangalore, Jun 18: The second edition of 'Kalakulotsav', a two-day Konkani drama festival by Kalakul repertory, the theatre troupe of Mandd Sobhann, will be held at Don Bosco Hall on June 22 and June 23 with four popular plays.

The four plays which will be showcased on both the days by the Kalakul artistes include ‘Rayachi Novi Mustayki’ (children's play based on the famous story ‘Emperor's New Clothes’) at 6 pm on June 22, ‘Melya Upranth’, a comedy play at 7 pm, ‘Bomma’ play based on the story of Hardhyar Kuris by the late A T Lobo at 5 pm on June 23 and ‘Mr Jesus’, another popular play at 7 pm.

‘Rayachi Novi Mustayki’ will be performed by child artistes who were trained by the ‘Kalakul repertory’ during the summer drama camp and rest of the plays will be showcased by the Kalakul artistes. All the plays are written by Arun Raj Rodrigues and directed by Christopher D’Souza Neenasum.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Arun Raj said that the troupe received good response during the first edition of Kalakulotsav. "This year all the plays are unique. I urge people not to miss a chance to watch them," he said.

The surplus funds from this drama festival will be utilized for the expenses of Kalakul repertory, he said, adding "We spend about Rs 6 lac annually to meet expenditures like staff salary and production cost."

Artistes performing in the Kalakulotsav are Melwin Avinash Pais, Darrel D’Souza, Anil D’Souza, Sandeep Mascarenhas, Rivin Crasta, Nishith Lobo, Sunil Antony, Hanly Coelho, Mariya Joyce, Michel Crasta, Malcon Rego.


About Kalakul repertory

‘Kalakul repertory’, the only theater repertory in Konkoni language, has won the hearts of the people through its unique shows in and around the state.

It has eight major productions and four small plays to its credite and so far they the artistes have presented more than 77 shows in several places like Goa, Mysore, Udupi, Bombay, Bangalore and others. They have also participated in three national festivals.

The Kalakul artistes, mostly belonging to the working class, meet five days a week, that is Monday to Friday from 6 pm to 8.30 pm, for physical exercise and theatre practice. All the stage work required for the play including the backdrops, lights and music is arranged by the group itself.

    We wish you all the best and success in your planned drama event. Kalakulotsav through Mandd Shoban has been effective in Konkani drama shows and presentation. We appreciate all your efforts and support for Konkani langauge.
