Mangalore: Cancer drives elderly couple to suicide

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, Jun 19: In a tragic incident, an elderly couple reportedly committed suicide at Marigudi, Urva here on the intervening night between Tuesday June 18 and Wednesday June 19.

The deceased have been identified as Padmanath (74) and his wife Yamuna (60). Padmanath was said to have been a physical training instructor at a school.

Police sources said that the incident took place between 10.30 pm and 6.30 am.

The couple left a death note stating that they were taking this extreme step as Yamuna was suffering from cancer for the past two years and they were not able to get it treated.

The incident came to light on Wednesday morning when their relative Dilip Kumar found them hanging at their house.

Another source said that the couple's house had collapsed in the rains a few days back, which led them to commit suicide.

Padmanath and Yamuna are survived by five daughters and a son.

Barke police have registered a case.

Many people may think how our elderly people are treated by their children's.But i dont know how above elderly couple where treated?
Parents always gives everything to their kids. Some parents are matured enough to do the proper planning in their life.
They give evrything to their kids as well as they save for their retirement & they do the education and children marriage plans.
As a parent & a youngster we should always do the saving's & investments. Most of the people invest in land & flats which can not be sold during the need hours immediately. The expected value doesnt come n people know the need of our's and they wanted to buy the property at less price & ven v sell n earn money which vil go to our medical treatement and rest money v need it after treatment expenses.
If v as individual dont plan properly or do the investment such as medical insurance, life policies ,education plans, marriage plan & retiremnet plan definitely we will face the problem where v cant beg to outside world nor our friends nor our family can come n help coz the reason is even they have2look after their family n their everyday needs.People may help not everytime.
If we hav good plan at the young age whatever the start of savings may be v can achieve our right goals throught out our lifetime & v will never face problems where v sud opt for long term plans or else fast money wont help us in our emergency such as land or flats.May help only for treatment n if u survive aft treatment u need for ur entirelife to treat urself till u get cured.
OSo dear people pls plan well n dont put ur eggs onlt in one basket just spread it n do the investment.

so no one will face problems as such i mean u dont need to ask money or funds from any well wishers.Nor u can commit suicide!!!!

As Dr. Devi Shetty recommended -RIGHT to Health is the Land mark.
great suggestion-this has to be followed up by the JANATHA-THE PUBLIC-WE TEH PEOPLE OF INDIA now:
That is the only way to go.
Rather than yeddys/reddys looting the natuion -let them come out with compulsory- Health insurance schemes.
Build series of hospitals in every village.
Let govt spend the money on basic purposes like this and not in bribes /scams/2g-coalgate/defence /ipletc.
spend more time for the & money for the welfare and benefit of the people.
In fact the state /Central govt should be given Agendas by the People of india and the Govt. should work and act on it immediately.

I agree with you 100%. When my father was suffering from cancer, I spent all my savings still could not afford expensive treatment that time and died. Now, I can afford but they are no more. What can a ordinary low income person get decease ? Either he has to suffer pain or commit suicide ?

    @Vinod John, Mangalore,
Well said Vinod John, really lucky your parents, to have a son like you, and it's a lesson for others to follow your steps n views. Yes of-Course, it's a unfortunate incident of the Elderly Couple, actually, it was not necessary to take so cruel step of ending their life because God has chosen them and given life, they would have waited for his call. But I think stubbornness, made them to take the extreme step and it would have avoided, if the help of their children's came on time. Anyway, I don't think much debate needed here for this incident to be discussed, it is to be understood. Will pray to our Almighty for their Soul to Rest in Peace, and ask Lord to forgive them what they did they do not know, even they do not read Daijiword Website, if they were know or reading, they would have been saved ? ? ?

Our Government should introduce a compulsory insurance for all Indian citizens - It should cover major illness such as cancer, kidney failures, accidental injury, death etc. Normal citizens who do not have regular source of income or their dependents cannot afford medical cost - definitely they will benefit.

Karan, Katapadi/Dubai if such insurance is there senior citizens will definitely benifit. Am so disturbed from morning after reading this news. The photo looks so good cannot believe they are no more. Its very unfortunate that they did not have anybody to share their problems. May be they did not want themselves to be burden to others..After having lived an independent life its not easy for anybody to be on others mercy.
Dignified elders are like that, they dont want to give problems to others.. We should take care of elders even and we should make sure they dont have to ask us... Like how parents give to their kids everything even before they ask.. Parents know what the child wants..
May god forgive them and give eternal rest.

Very sad. Felt terribly sorry reading the news. Either a case of case of unbearable physical pain or mental pain due of family reasons. We all pity the incidence and may be blame the victims, but may be! may be sometimes the circumstances are such that will leave no other option but to resort to it. In my view it may not be a hasty but well thoughout decision. May their soul rest in peace.

Sad to note the tragedy. Elderly are finding it difficult to manage the lonely years. Financial woes are another aspect. This does not look like a straight forward case. Thorough investigation required.

Eventhough we are not sure the circumstances led this extreme step, if in case the report is belived to be true & if in case their kins did not support them at this old age after raising 6 of them, what is the use of such children to any parents who do not take care of them during their ailing days!.

This might have been committed by an outsider It's not possible & hard to beleive that elderly couple taking the extreme step. Thorough investigation should be done to find out the truth A Matured Person never kills himself/herself as he/she knows that killing oneself is not the end to problem.

The way you are writing as if you know everything about the elederly couple. Do you know exactly the reason behind their suicide? You are assuming things and posting your comments senselessly! How you can say it is a case of property? Without knowing the true facts please do not assume anything and post your comments.

Atleast, please read Paul, Mangalore/Dubai's comments.

Here no question whatsoever arise of economically weaker section..!! While looking them one guess..they belonged to middle class family. May be surviving on 'pension' a decent life. Only due to health problem..they not able to bear expenses..which is of higher cost.

Never possible..even house collapsed due to rain..they won't take such extreme step. Somebody pressured them to write a death note. May be daugthers are visting oftenly to check well-being of there parents. At least these elder parents had much incline towards there grand children's..won't ever think of suicide..!! something is missing in between..
