Beltangady, Jun 19: A native of Mundaje in the taluk, who reportedly raped a 16-year-old girl who was returning home from school on Monday June 17 evening, has gone missing.

The minor student was accosted by the youth, who was wearing black trousers and red half shirt with stripes, near Kere Lord Parashurama Temple. He is said to have forcibly dragged away the girl behind some bushes about 15 feet away, and raped her after stripping her naked.  Someone who heard her alarms had rushed to the spot and succeeded in releasing her from the rapist’s clutches.

Enquiries have revealed the identity of the accused as Ramesh (25), residing at Arasumajalu Kukkimar House in Mundaje. A case under Atrocities against SC and STs Act has been registered against him in Beltangady police station. However, Ramesh has become untraceable, and the policemen have begun a search operation to nab him.
