Puttur: Rat fever claims two young lives

Puttur, Jun 19: At a time when dengue fever epidemic has sent fear waves through Sullia and Puttur taluks, rat fever has been emerging as a major threat. Two youngsters, one from Sullia, and the other from Puttur taluk, lost their lives to rat fever.

Jayaram (27) from Adkar in Sullia, who had approached the government hospital in Sullia for treatment initially, was referred to Mangalore hospital as the tests pointed towards possibility of rat fever. He was being treated in Mangalore for about a week, before succumbing to rat fever.

Taluk health officer, Dr Subrahmanya, and some personnel of community health centre paid a visit to the house of Jayaram.

Madhu (19), a labourer from Ulaya in Nidpalli village, Bettampady in Puttur taluk, reportedly died due to rat fever. The health department is yet to confirm that his death was caused by rat fever.
