Bangalore, Jun 19: It is learnt that Beary Academy president, Rahim Uchil, has sought clarification from the government on its instructions to resign. In a letter addressed to Basavaraj, secretary in the department of Kannada and culture, Uchil drew the attention of the official to the fact that he had been appointed for a term of three years, while seeking clear cut clarification as to whether tendering resignation at this juncture is mandatory.

Malati, who had been appointed as the president of Karnataka Nataka Academy 18 months back, tendered her resignation to Basavaraj on Monday June 17. Malati, an artiste backed by commendable achievements, said she is feeling insulted and hurt because of the demand for her resignation.

“I was told that my term would be three years. Various schemes for the welfare of artistes had been undertaken, and these will get suspended now. My family and I have been serving the professional theatre for the last 35 years, and that is why I was appointed to this post. I have nothing to do with politics, and I am not an activist of any of the political parties. As the government has said it does not require my services henceforth, I have honourably exited,” she explained.

Basavaraj said that the department has so far received resignations from the presidents of Konkani and Nataka academies. “It may require some time for others to follow suit,” he felt.
