Kasargod, Jun19: Heavy rain, which has been battering the district since the last two to three days, has inflicted huge losses on the people in the form of destroyed crops, crashed houses, and sea erosion.

Sea erosion at various places on the seashore of the district like Cherangai, Shiriya, Kasba, Bekal, Pallikere, and Kavugoly, has worsened. At Mogral, eight houses are surrounded by water. Low-lying areas are marooned. Water has entered historically famous Lord Madananteshwara temple in Madhur in the district.

At Kavugoly, sea has encroached upon a 600-metre stretch of the road. As a result, over 300 families living close to the sea are facing danger.  The connecting road between Kavugoly and Kadappura has been cut off.

Speeding wind and heavy rain have also caused loss of agricultural crops, besides inflicting damages to a number of houses. Betel nut, rubber, and banana plantations bore the brunt of the rain fury. While a house belonging to Rama Nayak in Nekraje was totally destroyed, over ten houses suffered partial losses.

The administration has decided to relocate families of K V Mohammed, Abdul Latif, K V Muhammed Kunhi, Dainabi, Abdul Khader, Ummer, and Jaleel living in Mogral Chala, to safer places because of threat of the area getting inundated, after water entered these houses. A fallen tree caused a loss of about Rs 60,000 to the ouse of Muttukoya in Kumble Shedikavu.
