Udupi: Medical student gang-raped at Manipal, students go on protest

Update: 11.40 pm

Udupi, Jun 21: Following the alleged gang-rape of a medical student at Manipal here that shook the coastal region, hundreds of students gathered at the college campus late evening on Friday June 21 and demanded justice.

The students who staged a protest demanded immediate arrest of the culprits and strict action in the case.

A minor chaos prevailed when the students claimed that the college security officer had behaved rudely with them when they went on protest.

Sources said that the security officer resigned on moral grounds later.

Tight police security at the college ensured that the protest was peaceful.

On Saturday, students' unions like ABVP and others are expected to stage a protest.

The 22-year-old medical student hailing from Kerala was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped by three men late night on Thursday June 20. No arrest has been made so far, though police have been questioning a few people.

The girl, who suffered injuries, is recuperating in hospital.

Udupi, Jun 21: Speaking to daijiworld, SP Dr Boralingaiah said that the medical student at Manipal who was gang-raped was first kidnapped by the men and taken away forcibly for about two kilometres from the university campus, where they committed the brutal crime.

As of now, no one has been officially arrested, he added.

Also, contrary to initial reports that four men were involved in the rape, the SP said that three persons including the auto driver kidnapped the girl in the auto from outside the library and raped her.

"The victim said in the complaint that she was abducted by the accused, driven to an isolated spot and gang-raped after midnight. Though she managed to reach her flat later, she gave the complaint early Friday," Boralingaiah said.

The girl, aged 22 years, is said to be out of danger and recovering. She has suffered a fracture in the leg and injuries on her hands and neck, the SP said, adding that the girl was staying in a flat and not in the hostel.

"We have requested the government to install a police outpost near the University so as to curb such crimes. A suitable decision is expected to be taken in this regard soon," he said.

A case of kidnap and rape has been registered in the Manipal police station, as per the complaint filed by MAHE estate manager Jaivittal.

Speaking to media persons, MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, who visited the hospital, said that he held discussions with Udupi SP and urged him to catch hold of the culprits immeditely. "I will also speak to the home minister and urged him to order a probe," he said.

There are 20 auto stands in Udupi and 800 auto drivers, and police are doing their best to investigate and arrest the men responsible, he added. Also, the security guard at the university library is understood to have given some information about the incident to the management.

Udupi: Medical student gang-raped by three men at Manipal

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (UM)

Udupi, Jun 21: A young woman was allegedly gang-rape by four men late night on Thursday June 20 at Manipal here.

The girl is a fourth year MBBS student from Kerala, sources said.

It is said that at around 11.30 pm the girl had been waiting outside the Manipal University library, when an auto with four men came and stopped near her. The men, said to be auto drivers, allegedly took her away forcibly and raped her.

The identities of the men are not yet known, but the police is hopeful of catching them with the help of CCTV footage. However, sources later said that the CCTV was unable to capture the incident, as it took place outside its range of coverage.

It is said that the girl returned to her flat and was then admitted to hospital. There were injuries on her body.

Udupi SP Dr Boralingaiah and Mangalore SP Abhishek Goyal too visited the hospital.

Investigations are on. A search operation for the culprits has been launched across the district, sources said.

This incident brings an important issue to light. Having been a student in Manipal myself I can understand staying at the library till it closes down. Perhaps the university should consider offering security services for students especially at late hours. The attack suggests the culprits knew the victims routine.

Rape did not happen because of Congress government. It happens because of pervert minds and insensitivity and depravity of people towards other human beings.

No words to condemn this inhuman crime right inside the campus!! Perpetrators should be bought to justice soon!!

Manipal though a famous place of learning has lost its reputation due to utter degradation of moral values due to drugs, sex, and alcohol patronized by the vast number of uber rich students who gain admission through paying crores in capitation fees!!

I have heard from a couple of parents from outside states who were very wary of sending their wards to Manipal because of this big negative point!!

Even though all say that wearing modern clothes, going out late in the night, womens lib, etc. is legal and should be allowed, they should consider the ground reality and the environment and judge as to how safe is the place at late night. Hanging out, wherever, as late as 11:30 pm alone in itself fraught with risks of inviting unwanted trouble from rowdies, perverts, sex starved people mostly high under the influence of psychotropic substances!!

Though it is easy to blame the law enforcers, given the reality, one, especially the fairer sex should take absolute precaution to save themselves from situations like this by wearing moderately and not moving out late in the night without escorts!!

In Dubai, mostly Russian, Thai and Filipinas wear most seducing dress and yet men don’t try to rape them because of the strict law. A taxi driver told me that during the night they get drunken ladies as passenger and if they stop for 3-5 minutes a CID car will immediately stop and ask them why the car was stopped? So he said no driver will make an attempt even to touch her body. We men shouldn’t attribute rapes because women entice men, there were many instances a 3 year old child was raped and how that small child can entice anyone?
We need stringent law to punish the rapists and legalize the prostiution to avoid such rapes.

Well said. people who react with blaming the girls for the abominable acts inflicted on them such as these should put themselves into the shoes of the victim. This is a land which has fought and got freedom from the colonialists, but not from the enemies within: outdated cultural belief systems, perception of women as objects of lust, further victimization of the victim of rape, male chauvinistic law and (dis)order systems, and worst people sitting in judgement of women's character! If a girl is not safe at the temple of learning where else can she be?
the whole of dakshina kannada attracts the student population from all over india. if this continues, parents will think twice before sending their children here. until recently Mangalore and manipal exuded such respect both for its educational ideals and decency. But now it is in news for all the wrong reasons. High time the Manipal police stopped posing for pics and set out to catch the culprits.

Well said Ashwin. Very unfortunate incident to happen in Manipal. There is no safe place in the world anymore. I can only say this - one must take enough precautions (I agree with you Nanag Shetty). One cannot take chances anymore. I was a student of MIT in late 80's. It was not unusual for the library to open until early morning during exams. 11:30pm was never considered late. There were fewer girls than today, but they were moving freely and always in a group. The girls of MIT or KMC used to be fiercely protected by their respective male counterparts. Like you said if this incident ever happened during your time (forget your time, imagine our time) things would have been different. The students would have literally hunted down the culprits and shredded them (although I do not subscribe nowadays to this idea of beating somebody, taking law in to his own hands).
To echo your statement - If a man does not respect a woman, then he is not a MAN.
Authorities, please use all your force, bring the culprits to book and re-instill confidence among students.

This rape incident is negative publicity for Manipal group of Institutions esp. now during admissions time for most colleges. Many students might opt to study in different universities than in Manipal. manipal is also infamously known for drugs and other nefarious activities.

Seriously, bars in Manipal should be closed by the police by 11 PM. Why is the police not enforcing such rigid laws so that drunkenness and voilence can be controlled in a community that has so mnay students (26,000 students study in Manipal).

Most of these bar owners are BJP wallahs and had got their licences during the corrupt BJP establishment. Now the congress govt should revoke all their licenses, and also the licences given for rampant building construction of residential and commercial complexes happening everywhere in Manipal without proper setback rules and parking zones.

Law and Order situation in Coastal Area in particularly getting bad to worst ever since new Government came in to rule. During BJP rule, all so called culprits but including few innocents were jailed but during Congress rule all culprits including all dreaded criminals are set free. This is one of the differences between BJP vs. Congress Government. When BJP was in power at least these cowards had fear from so called Moral Police but not now since Moral Police themselves threaten by new Home Minister. So, this is bound to happen. Moral Police always attacked illegal business activities around our Coastal region which many people do not like it. During Congress rule, Karnataka Police is not free to take action against these cowards if they belong to their preferred communities. We may have to wait and see how many Womens' Associations will come down to Manipal to protest the incident and seeking justice for this girl

Very tragic incident at education hub, no one is to be blamed here. The blame goes to LAW , for eg DEC 16 gang rape accused got the permission to write the exams at jail. The question is why is the govt showing soft corner to these criminals. IF law convitcs the accused in public then no doubt these tyoe of crimes will automatically come down.LAW in india gives soft corner to criminals rather than public.

I agree with Divya, Bangalore’s comment. If we start victimizing the rape victim, we are not only putting salt on victims wound but indirectly encouraging rape. Questioning the character of rape victim, why she is out at 11.30, what clothes she is wearing etc etc. amounts to victimizing the victim. If we start victimizing the victim with such dominant questions and narrations, rape will slowly become a acceptable or digestible act in the society, the way corruption has become a acceptable act. Rape is not just sex or lust , it is like invasion, violence, heinous crime against her person and exhorting power on others. Yes, women should be more careful, but it doesn’t mean that anybody should brand them as weak, victimize them, and exhort the power on them

Let's all Udupian's not think first that the Student is a Keralite. It can happen to any one. Manipal Institutons' are known globally.

D.K district is known for having highest number of higher educational institutions in entire Karnataka. So the Law and order must not collapse by this kind of incidents.

She is a "Student First" and I will condemn the act of rape or any crime for that matter.

Manipal Institute Authorities must not allow students (Specially Girls) to be at the Library till 11:30 pm. If at all the students wants to wait so long, then the management must see to it that there is absolute security for students.

People have every right to protest in this genuine reason to get justice to the affected girl/family. We must not keep quiet and just be the mute spectators/observers. It can happen to our own sister/daughter or for a relative or a neighbor tomorrow. and God forbid,if it happens... then we will feel the reality!!!.

Yes Perinje Saab, I agree all your points. However, being citizens, we need to keep our government attentive at all times for our security by waking up them from their deep sleep. You were successfully doing it till May-2013. I request you to continue the same efforts & then only government comes under pressure and does all those punishments you were suggesting for. I feel 4 ministers of twin districts must keep their head down before people for not giving security to those who voted them with lots of trust.

It is a best Institute to to learn and excel if you or your child wishes to do so ( There will be other Institutes which I have not experienced ). If sex, drugs, alcohol if you are blaming..it is personal choice...!!??? But rape is not...!!!?? Generally Manipal college campus never sleeps until 12 night. Whole night during examination..!!!??? This is a isolated incident which should not have happened in our Manipal..!!!??? It may be a personal rivalry or any criminal act...for which do not blame administration of Manipal. They take money but it is worth it...and not expect anything free from anybody...Why they have to give free..!!!???

There is a misconception among Indian men that crimes against women have increased in the last decade because of westernization.

The bitter reality is that women in India have always been treated as a second class citizen since thousands of years.

With growing access to technology, media and Education, women today have somehow gathered the courage to report it.

I strongly recommend that all the 03 Culprits be Hanged @ Tiger Circle in full Public view.

There is no doubt that the MAHE Group would be able to put behind their weight and get arrest the men involved in this incident very soon. But the larger picture of worry is that though the victims are coming out to register the complaints and the media has been focusing on this issue by giving due publicity, it seems our country lawmakers are still to decide on how to tackle this menace. It can only be said that the negative publicity of the accused getting away from severe punishment has increased the crimes against women. Similarly, our country's taboo of doubting the weaker sex on every such incident also dilutes the case of sympathizing with the victim and the incident Equally there is no social problem for carrying on such crimes but completely lack of fear of the Society and the Law-makers.

Dr D'Silva & Others(Who commented on my post & Disagree with me)

    A Big Contradiction!!!!

Am not branding any place nor am not even questioning girls dress & Character,&nd am not even blaming religions and religious activity and even the self activity groups which are there.

Ya!!! Girl's you can go on a brisk walk late night,Girls can do whatever they want late night or on a sunny day or even when its raining.Gals go out and enjoy. But beware girls there are tigers outside.

One more thing i too have Testosterone and I didn't rape anyone.
There are infinite eyes watching around, when girl come out with some miniature kind of dress.

"I think nobody will send their girls half naked,If ever it happens its just because of their own interest and might be external effect"

And the rapist's are still more worse, don't they have daughter, sister at their house.

Just remember we can't expect Government or Police to change. When we change everything will change and i doesn't me to say that all are bad.

Good habits doesn't come all of a sudden from nowhere.

Did you learn A-Z in just 1 day when you were a kid,Its takes time ma to see the change. We are humans and we have the power to control the brain and its activities.

Of Course the culprits must be punished, but the person who punishes is again a Culprit,Confused :)

Even "moral policing" is very difficult to implement in India. As majority needs Discotheque, video parlour and dance bar,However its banned today by Mr,Fernandes,Thanks for that sir.Proud to be a mangalorian :),But these thing still goes on unnoticed,Which is again a truth. But simply it has been banned.

Hope am not hurting someone or some organisation or religions here.Sorry if am doing so.And which is not even my intention to hurt people out there.

Mangalore/ Udupi will always be an awesome place for me with great memories and friends and family but this brings back years of memories of eve-teasing that all of us women from the Mlore-Udupi area have experienced for most of our growing-up years. Honestly it doesn't matter where you are from, criminals like this are there everywhere. Its the male chauvinists who think they have to "CONTROL" women and "TEACH" women what to do and what not to do or the simple idea of how can a woman do better than a "MAN" that leads to situations like this. In this incident its not the time, you get eve-teased at 11 in the morning when you go out to get grocery! How long before we can stop "AVOIDING" situations like this because the men in our society do not know how to respect women? Should we have to compromise our freedom because a man can't "CONTROL" himself? Sick!
If only every child from his childhood is instilled with proper values, equal respect for men and women, these things wouldn't happen. Again i'm just hoping for Utopia in a society that thinks the girl child is a "CURSE"!
I thought the best possible way to escape this narrow-mindedness was to move out, but hearing incidents like this takes you back to those growing-up years where you avoided going out just because there was a shady guy lurking in the streets and you were too young and scared to stand-up to him.
God bless this young girl in her recovery and give her strength to bring her culprits to justice.

If we bring such systems i hope such types of crime will not happen frequently.

First of all, my respects and condolences towards the victim. Hope she will recover soon, physically and mentally.
Every place in this earth has good people and bad people. The animal instinct in men comes out when they have no fear for law of the land, very abusive upbringing and slaves for alchohol and other substantial drugs. I can't think sane people can do this kind of heinous crime against a woman. I must say that easy access to porn these days are directly related to the increasing in rape cases.
I live in a place which is ruled by a king and his kigdom, i can see women driving all alone or walking on the streets all alone at very late nights which we can't even imagine in a 'democratic' country like India. I'm not against the democracy here. But look at the people who are becoming so careless about law of the land these days, it's really worrying me a lot! At least once, please once, hang the rapists in a big ground in front of a huge crowd and see the difference. I'm sure it will have an impact on the viewers which will prevent them in making the same mistake again.
And those who are trying to relate politics and character of the girl to the above incident, GET A LIFE. Learn to respect woman first before you do anything. A woman is a mother, a daughter and a sister on whom we always depend on one or other way. Peace and respects.

Let us all pray God to heal the girl emotionally and physically.

Media is definitely to blame for objectifying women and portraying them in a poor light.
Movies have atleast one 'item song', women are portrayed as cheap, flirty, enjoying multiple adultrous. Audience is glued to serials with a hero abusing the heroine, the heroine loving him even after the abuse. Every channel contains 'crime' stories, express buses telecast movies where the hero has sickles, rods, and many other instruments as accessories. If this is not enough, dance competetions have little girls in skimpy clothes gyrating to 'munni badnaam hui/'sheela ki jawani' and parents proudly cheering in the audience when the girls says she wants to become an 'item girl' when she grows up.
Right from childhood, boys need to be educated to respect girls/women,a female wearing skirt/jeans/shorts doesn't mean she is characterless, respect her for what she is, media needs to project women in a good light.
Most importantly very harsh treatment for the accused of such crimes should be awarded in public to prevent such crimes in future.

They should find the cowardly and despicable culprits (who need three other friends with them to attack one young girl) and throw them into jail till they rot and die there.

And as for everyone who's commenting about the time she was out, do shut up!! She didn't ask to be raped, she was out studying, which is what she came to Manipal to do. Also, as a citizen of India, no one can tell her that she should not be out in a public place at ANY time. The rapists should be told that.

I do hope that the University authorities won't start locking up the girls after this, though, instead of securing the campus better. When an incident like this happens, it's the girls who always suffer, even after the hue and cry has died down.

let us forget politics in it for the moment. This attack is against very cultured heritage of Mangaloreans.Since Manipal is well known place in the planet for it's educational and financial institutions ,this incident tend to attract national & international attention. My contention is that this particular incident could have been thwarted if Manipal police had well managed police action in place. It is high time police higher ranking officials need to be changed in both districts and made them responsible any untoward incident of nature in their police station vicinity. What happened is indeend very very shameful act for which we Mangaloreans has to down our head.

For everyone here. I am a fifth year law student and was appalled to hear about the incident that took place.I sincerely believe that it is about time that we stopped blaming the victims of rape and started looking at the actual cause. It is only in our backward country that we take it for granted that a woman cannot walk out of her house after dark. In the developed world, women have equal rights, equal freedoms and can do whatever they want. Skimpy clothes do not cause rape, partying DOES NOT cause rape, staying out late DOES NOT CAUSE RAPE. RAPISTS CAUSE RAPE. Also, just FYI, the girl was out late because she was studying for her exam which was today. The library is open late for the same purpose. Women in this country have the right to study, the right to freedom and our right to choice. All of these are fundamental rights. It is not YOUR OPINION or YOUR FEELING that women who are out late "deserve to be late" that counts. If you want to give your children a better India, a better life and a world of self respect, try and change your backward, chauvinistic mindsets.

Well the most unfortunate incident to happen in Manipal of all places .
In response to what Mr Nanag Shetty talks with respect to education and time - please note I graduated from MIT in the year 2000 and the whole town is up and awake round the clock. Students come from the library at 3 am and walk back to the hostels ..this is campus ..the whole town is a campus .... Medical students study till 5 am and their library is open round the clock .. if we were students there today we would have hunted down the auto stand drivers . things have changed with autonomy , but the mind set of society hasn't...If she was wearing shorts a sleeveless tee or forthat matter " WHATEVER ", its her choice especially inside campus zone its the same as being inside your won house compound.. it is that sacred ...
For all the people that immediately point fingers to a woman's character ,be a man first and go hunt those perpetrators of the crime , if not at least be there as a pillar of strength for the woman ...
on a more serious and constructive note, hope law and order takes this very seriously and nips this in the BUD... there were no rapes in this side of town .. the twin districts per se are safe places for women..

Girls Walking in the night has been a target by many guys to come on bikes touch or hit them and escape.
Few times girls coming and retuning home after church services were also abused and molested by guys.
The management and the police are not able to make a single arrest till now, matter of shame,
Cameras only installed in the highways also not helping and depending on cameras should be the latter step but not last step.
Also there are hardly any polices in manipal even with more than ten thousand students studying. Me being a lecturer students have shared this incidents with me and are scared to inform to the police or security most of the times.

    hello juliet mascarenhas,
    Oh sure i respect women,
"What a creature you are" so these words are enough for some to do some illegal act.
Every individual has his or her own way looking some unknown person.

Am not blaming that girl,Even the drivers act is punishable,

But why such kind of behaviour is arising in people today ?This kind of events are not just happening in Mangalore and Manipal its happening around the globe, some come into picture and some won't.

India also has a mixed culture,so we need to reform ourselves and consider which is good and bad implement it in our life.

We teach kids not to smoke and drink but what parents do ? Even a small lie is enough to change a kids mind ,as these small kids are exposed to everything today. Am i right mam.

When we can adopt to fast changes why can't we adopt to a small change by turning ourselves to good citizens. Can't we?

Here in this world entire system is dependent on "Truth",More the "Lies" more problems. This is what is happening now-a-days.

Why can't we change? What drivers have done is mistake,I agree. But Why such mistakes happen is more important.right

Do good, Be good. Is this the goodness shown by the 4 Rick drivers to the innocent girl who was waiting near the gate late night for reasons whatever known to her. She has come all the way from Kerala to persuade her medical studies. Instead of helping her the wicked men pounced on her like the hungry tigers and u r blaming the innocent child. What a creature you are. We need a place where we can move freely at any hour of the day (24hrs).
Manipal can be made as a heaven or a hell it depends on we people.
Sex, drugs and illegal activities found every where.Metro, urban or rural areas.
What is wrong with the girls behaviors. They know their limits. A few of the opposites who always Wait with a greed to make use of their innocence.
Present Boys and girls mingle well maintaing an arms distance. It is the evil minded who try to destroy their life.
Chemical castration in the presence of this medical student is the right punishment to these beasts, to make this girl a leading doctor one day.Their pics should be displayed in all the medias and prominent places.

    Dear Shiva,

I completely understand the concern you have for today's youth especially when the media has enough reasons to spoil us. But I am telling this from my personal experience in Manipal, and I am sure whoever has studied or is studying there will agree with me. Manipal is very very safe especially when it comes to drugs and booze and other illegal activities. The administration is efficient in keeping the students especially girls safe. Yes bad incidents happen in Manipal, but those are rare and when they happen, somewhere they tend to be done by people with their own choice, their own decisions which after a point even an institution cannot control. What happened was due to failure in law and administration, which could have happened anywhere. But they do take enough precautions and awareness attempts to help us students make right choice. Its sad what happened, but its definitely not cause it was Manipal. It could have happened anywhere because there is no fear, there is no fear in us today for any consequences. My parents too were very cautious in sending me to Manipal for my masters, they are conservative as well. But Manipal does have normal upbringing, actually, its healthy. Yes, there are bad groups who does bad things, who deal with bad things, but those groups are everywhere. We cannot generalise that this is manipal or its culture.

I just pray for the girl. No idea what punishments these culprits will get. Sadly, in India everything is prolonged unless its for someone VIP or a big businessman. I just hope she recovers and fulfills her dreams of her life. Its sad. really sad. May God give her enough strength.

Also conduct a research on primary students i.e 1-10,You don't believe,Even a third standard guy from one of the reputed school was talking nonsense in one of the local bus @ Mangalore,Today we can even blame Internet, for all these changes.Just ride all these kids bag's for e-media,hopefully u'll understand.

    Really a sad news,But

    1.How safe is Manipal?
2.Is manipal house to Sex,Drugs and all illegal activities?
3.Is Girls behaviour right these days?
4.Are Boys & Girls with questionable character are cause for illegal activities like this?

there might be some reason behind this case,Simply Nobody is going to rape someone.and people view/eyesight will differ from person to person. So we must have some dressing consciousness.

today we don't have any moral values,so its creating so much of trouble. The religion and elders in family should mould our younger generation, but disaster is today even parents don't have any culture or moral values.

Biologically sex hormones testosterone and oestrogen plays an important role here,ha ha ha.....So Biologically its difficult to avoid these events,But if we teach human values, morals & behaviour we can avoid such events happening in future.Agree?

We need change in every aspect of our life,Only then we can see some change or growth.

    Dear Shiva,

    1. Manipal is as safe, if not safer, than any place else in our country.

    2. Sex, Drugs, illegal activities- Please do not generalise the actions of a few bad individuals to the entire Manipal student community. You will be surprised to know that students here are more decent than in some of the so called reputed places.

    3. Girls have the right to behave however they want. The laws of the country should be made tougher to preserve the right to individual freedom and expression. Blind belief in customs should be avoided.

    4. Girls and boys of questionable character? What does that even mean?

If dressing was the only reason why these things happen, then why is an 80 year woman raped? Why is a child of 4 years raped? Why does a father in Kota rape his own child for 25 years?

Please understand, rape is an act of violence, just like an act of robbery or a murder. The problem lies with the mind of the rapist/molester rather than anything the victim does.

I was a student at Manipal. I just want to know what moral authority do you have to raise questions at peoples characters? To me that is immoral. And when you raise questions are the righteousness for girls, moral values instilled in boys should be questioned first. What kind of values have they been taught to not control themselves. No one questions boys the way the dress. So why question girls? Its plain stupid of you to even bring such thing up. Please come up with better reasons, like ill cultured men who have not learnt to respect women as reasons for the increasing rapes.

    Mr. Shiva,
    1. Safety of a place depends on people, u cannot brand a place safe or unsafe
    3. what do you mean by womens character, every individual has rights, going out late night is not a crime

you cannot blame it on hormones, if yes, you also have testosterone, have YOU raped anyone ??????

are men so weak that if a woman wears whatever she wants, the men cant control themselves?? stop blaming womens clothes!!! Unless rapists are punished , nothing will change, it has become a game for them

Punishment like Saudi govt. is the only way to curb these activities and that will never happen in India as money can change anything in India so we have to keep tolerating this throughout our lives.

These guys should be named and shamed and even their Auto and Driving License be cancelled. Immediate action should be taken before others fall prey.

I am shocked, and am currently a student of MIT.I do not feel like studying there anymore. This country needs to improve. We had seen such an instance in Delhi ,where no action was taken , entire issue was politicised. If stringent actions are not taken matters will become worse. And such an incident in an educational town renowned internationally . I seriously hope the university management and the government catches the culprits and gives them brutal punishment.
