Kundapur: 12-year-old killed, 9 injured as mini bus overturns

Kundapur, Jun 21: A young boy was killed and nine others injured when a mini bus overturned at Ottinene near Shiroor in Byndoor here on Friday June 21. 

The deceased has been identified as Chetan (12), son of Gopal and Gulabi, residents of Hallur.

The accident occured when the driver of the mini bus tried to avoid collision with a lorry that was speeding from the opposite direction. The driver veered off to the side and lost control of the vehicle, thus resulting in the tragedy.

The passengers in the mini bus were on their way back to their hometown Kumta, after visiting Sigandur and Kollur temples.

On Thursday June 20 afternoon, four closely related families from Kumta visited Subramanya Temple at Honnavar and halted the night at Sigandur. On Friday morning, they visited Sigandur temple and then Kollur, before starting back home.

Altogether, 17 persons were in the mini bus. Among them, 10 sustained injuries while Chetan died on the spot.

The injured identified as Krishna, Bangarappa, Savitri, Ranjita, Ganapati, Mohan and Gangadhar have been admitted to Kundapur hospital, while mini bus driver Prashanth Shetty and conductor who suffered serious injuries were shifted to Manipal hospital.

Byndoor police have registered a case.
