Udupi, Jun 22: Despite pouring rain, hundreds of students from various colleges descended on the streets here on Saturday June 22, in strong protest of the alleged gang-rape of a medical student at Manipal on the night of Thursday June 20.

The protest was led by Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) and various other student organizations.

The students marched in unison towards Clock Tower where they held a protest demanding immediate arrest of the persons responsible for the brutal crime and thorough and transparent probe into the incident.

The expressed fears that if the culprits go scot free, more such incidents may occur in the future. They lamented that girl students were not safe anymore in college campuses also.

The protestors demanded strict action against the culprits and that justice be done to the victim. They also said that stringent laws should be enforced to deter rapes and crimes against women.

Organizations like Campus Front of India and Girls Islamic Organization (GIO) also protested. GIO in its memorandum demanded that alcohol, circulation of blue films and obscene literature should be banned by the government and that appropriate steps should be taken to provide conveyance to women travelling after dark. They also urged educational institutions to impose dress code on students.

A minor chaos prevailed between the different groups but the situation was quickly brought under control by the police.

Traffic was affected for about an hour due to the protest.

The protestors also marched towards tahsildar's office via Bannaje road and submitted a memorandum addressed to the home minister and the chief minister. They also submitted the same to SP Dr Boralingaiah.

Tight police security was deployed at the spot.

It is a sad and shameful act by taporis. The police will catch the rapists and give them horrible experience for their madness. The fearless guys will be given first aid by beating 100 lashes on their back, then followed by other treatment.

Although what you say abt rapists is almost accepted, in this recent change of Govt. from BJP to Congress has many BJPians (those goonda type) wild with anger - so the angle of someone trying to create this kind of situation can not be ruled out.
When culprits are apprehended, truth will come out and hope it will be disclosed to the public.

    Dear DW readers ,
The issue has been trivialized here
between BJP and congress comments from a few entities of each party and special groups and morally perfect human beings dictating dress code.
A girl has been raped , her hopes and dreams at this point in time devastated. Her family and near and dear ones going through trauma not anticipated or that can be described.
These are my views on the above subject of demonstrations taking place and i feel sure most people may not accept the same
1)There is no need for political blame games or politically driven strikes, why does ABVP,or NSUI or Some student front hold these strikes?
Can some one answer what can be a tangible result of these strikes
2)The police are not our ENEMIES , they are here to protect. No one can predict a crime like the one that took place and no amount of platitudes will change that. The police aren't going to benefit by siding an political party or individual interest when it comes to crime of this nature. Most officers, constables are either husbands, fathers, brothers or for the least SONS to a mother and will do their job to get the culprit..
3)The pressure of time lines from political parties, student unions is meaningless.
4)If the people care so much, the students from Manipal,KMC,MIT,go to the bottom of this issue , do what you need to,put your ear to the ground handle the autorickshaw drivers on your own terms and the truth will be out faster than any inquiry or strike can deliver .
I am saying this as being a student leader in Manipal once and in our time we wouldnt have waited for political outfits to take mileage of the situation ...
Last but not the least my dear fellow readers , lets all refrain from character accusations , dress code, moral policing obligations that we feel for our individual parties we represent and show support and solitude to this girl in her time of need.
These are my personal views only , so if students feel demonstarting without a banner helps - GO AHEAD ..

Dear readers a rapist doesn't require party, religion or need permission to do heinious act its selfdevloped so why are you blaming political party? The rapist doesn't seek permission to do such acts in general...... its people should change their mentality and respect each individual whether its man/woman then only these can be stopped..... not the govt. or political leaders can stop such acts unless there's a strict punishment for such act.

This is no minor issue, but would it be fine for letting the police do there job(maximum of one week)? Still if they cant do anything about the culprits, then they should be dissmised. One thing Indian police think is that after clearing through the tests and the fitness test while joining the force, its all done. There should be a system to have frequent test. Everyyear there should be a shuffling of the officers, and the only one decision to avoid the shuffling must be rested on the people living under that particular police station. Then they will start working for the people instead of working for the government.

Jaimini, I fully agree with your comment. Why Martis had to go to Kabul where very few Indians go. Moreover Karnataka is part of India. Indians are free to go to any part of India. Most of them who are lucky go to different parts of the world. So he has no right to tell why Keralites work and study in Karnataka. Now just concentrate that those rapists are nabbed as soon as possible.

I dont blame police or any political party for this incidence. It was not do e in day in main city where people movement is more. It was done in a interior road.. so at late night walking that should be prohibited. Not only rapists it might be snake or street dogs attack also or theft..

I condemn this unfortunate incidence. It has bought shame to Manipal. I would apologize to all the NRI and outsider students for this shameful thing from a local.. However it is not clear who has done it. An auto driver will not say I am auto driver I will rape you.. so it might be somebody else or someone from outskirts of manipal. No auto driver will dare to touch as he will not kick is stomach for his desperate desire.

Or else it might be under alcohol influence. . People often feel villainistic after consuming alcohol
.why people were against pub attack and home stay attack because thode culprits are from BD and RSS and VHP and BJP government support them.. the attacker openly said they were from sangh parivar and BJP openly support them. This is the reason we blame BJP on that incidence...
However congress dont support such violent groups. .

NAVEEN kumar MP had visited the police and threatened to stage a protest. He has no shame who watch videos while he is on his duty..

The protests by the students was highly appreciated. In spite the heavy downpour all the students joined in the protest. ABVP and other student organizations did a wonderful job. The rapists should be caught as soon as possible as there will be more protest in the offing. Hang the rapists without any trial. Our justice system is bad in this country and that is why this rapes and molestation is not ending. We hear more and more cases day by day. Nirbhaya's case is still hanging in the court instead of those rapists being hanged long back. At this time all should come together and fight for justice instead of pointing fingers at each other. Pray for the victims speedy recovery and a quick arrest of those rapists.

Time for eliminaion of all these characters:

Percentage of Malayalees students may be high compared to students from other states..reason they are not getting seats in their own states, cos their colleges are filled with students who have scored higher marks. On waht guaranty u r telling students from only one particular states are indulged in spoiling our cultures/society? If u travel all around India u can see same situation everywhere. Now at this piont stop starting something new problems..which will lead to unity of country ''India''

Morning mist attackers were BJP members. hence the blame went on BJP.

Well said JPB, issue with people like Martis is that they see India as a nation but as many nations within India - kerala / karnataka .etc... So if Martis son / daughter gets an excellent offer to work in other states / countries, its fine. But Indians from other states needs Martis permission to come to Mangalore / Udupi. No wonder a country so divide, was ruled easily by British for such long long time. Most important point to note is that its a disturbing news of a girl being raped, but this guy talks of Kerala and other communities. Have some sense dude before you write irrelevant comments sensitive news.

No Politics here.Criminal mind continues to expose themselves on getting opportunity. Women should avoid moving alone during night. Pl accompany yourself with your friends or relatives. looks like being in Kabul you must be developing the Taliban effect, very sheepishly you create an interstate color to this disastrous crime. This clearly shows you are not bothered of the situation at hand , come what may you want to see your kids do not have admission issues or employment issues in the long run. v good keep thinking like the Taliban and then you will also want to have a common wealth of independent states in india. As a resident of Udupi, I personally feel so upset for the situation. But I can't support ABVP or Campus Front for their these type of activities. The reason is was being a student of Vaikunta Baliga Law College, being a employee of a MNC, I personally observed so many things where and how the outside students are distroying our culture, our peace and our friendly aumosphere. Can anyone tell me that, how many Kannadigas are studying or working in Kerala? When compare to the number of Malayalees in Karnataka, The number is very very low. I saw personally in Manipal, M'lore, Hubli- Dharwad and in B'lore, in almost every institution is filled with Malayalees Why?, Is there any shotage of manpower in Karnataka?. ABVP, Campus Front pls join hands with our Govt. to solve these type of issues. I am not supporting the culprits, they deserve hanging. This is my humble request with all of my fellow kannadigas, pls monitor the situation, so that our kids may get the maximum benefits from our institutions, The situation which we faced and facing now should not be faced by our kids in near future.
