Udupi, Jun 22: Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel on Saturday June 22 condemned the gang-rape of a medical student at Manipal on Thursday June 20 night and said that police failure in curbing evils like drug menace and other crimes was responsible for the incident.

Speaking to reporters during his visit with other BJP leaders to Udupi to take stock of the situation, Kateel warned that if the police fail to catch the culprits in the next two days, protest will be intensified.

"The gang-rape at Manipal has brought as much shame as the one in Delhi last December. It has made people bow their heads in shame," he said.

"Over the past one month or so, incidents like rape and other crimes have been repeating in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The police should catch the culprits in each case and punish them stringently without bowing to any political pressure," he said.

"Manipal is not only an education hub but also a business centre, but its image has been tarnished by the drug mafia and other illegal activities that are prevalent here. Strict action should be taken against hotels and businesses that remain open late into the night, and security must be tightened in educational institutionals and hostels," Kateel said.

He also met IGP Pratap Reddy and discussed the matter with him. He assured that the police will be given all support and assistance on his part and urged the IGP to ensure that the culprits are caught soon.

Kota Srinivas Poojary, Raghupati Bhat, Capt Ganesh Karnik, Nagaraj Shetty and others were present.

Udupi, Jun 22: IGP (western range) Pratap Reddy on Saturday June 22 said that eight police teams  led by SP Dr Boralingaiah have been formed to investigate the Manipal gang-rape case and trace the accused at the earliest.

Addressing a press meet here on Saturday even as students from various colleges marched into the streets demanding justice, the IGP said that the investigation will be taken on a war-footing and assured that the accused will be caught soon.

"Taking into consideration the physical and mental condition of the victim, we will elicit information about the accused from her. If she is not in a position to talk, we will try to get the required information through the doctors treating her," he said.

"We have already obtained certain leads and information about the accused. Questioning is going on and we are confident of arresting the accused very soon," he added.

He also said that the exact spot of the crime, where the girl was taken and reportedly gang-raped by three men, cannot be revealed at this point of time as it might hamper investigation.

Based on the manner in which the crime was carried out, the IGP said that it seemed to be the handiwork of an experienced auto rickshaw driver, who could easily drive the auto at a high speed late in the night. The other two men are yet unknown.

He also informed that home minister K J George will visit Udupi and Manipal on Sunday June 23 and discuss the case with the officials concerned.

SP Dr Boralingaiah was present.

CM condemns Manipal gang-rape, promises stern steps

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Jun 22: Taking serious note of the rape of a medical student in Manipal on the night of Thursday, Karnataka chief minister, Siddaramaiah condemned the incident and said that all out measures would be taken to punish the culprits involved with the crime.

In a statement made here today, he said that state home minister, K J George, would be visiting Manipal on Sunday June 23, to take stock of the situation, hold consultations with the concerned, and initiate necessary action.

The incident has evoked protests by students and others at Udupi and Manipal. The protestors have been demanding immediate arrest of the rapists. The policemen claim that they have been trying their best to find out the identities of the criminals.

Totally unacceptable - Jayaprakash Hegde

Speaking to daijiworld, Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Jayaprakash Hegde condemned the incident and said, "This is a tragic incident that has taken place at Manipal University. Just last year the police and the management had together worked to beef up security in the campus following a meeting with the students. There is a home guard security vehicle, CCTVs and so on, and yet such a gruesome incident has happened. This is totally unacceptable and shocking."

He added, "Manipal University should give even more security to its students, as this campus is of international standards where students from all over come to study. I am in touch with the police, and I can say that they are doing their best to catch the accused.

"Let us hope for the best. Right now what is most important is that the girl (victim) is given full moral support by her friends, family and the college so that she recovers quickly from the shock."

Every day gangs break in houses and they steal especially in interior parts of Karnataka, so far nothing is solved, no one is arrested, so there is no accountability for the police. No one will ask how many robbery cases reported and how many solved?
majority of those house are looted which are locked and owners are away. It is better to privatize the police academy and that can run independantly. The tax papyers is employer and Govt is collector and distributor of funds.

Why he had not expressed his concerns when lot of misdeeds carried out by Sangh Parivar members in his own constituency?

When election comes, shameless politicians gets ready to go to any extent for their political gain.

Best Example is feku Modi, who is on visit to flood affected Uttarakand.
Why MOdi didn't visit Orissa & Andra Pradesh last year, when these states affected by flood? Simple, there is no BJP prominence.

    P. Shrish Kumar absolutely u r correct that the particular rickshaw will not report stand after this event. So my humble request to the Police commissioner to search the culprits ( they may be of any community ) and give them last degree punishment till they disclose the reality of their worst gang who caught victim. There will be more ladies students residing in the hostel from various countries and ladies students coming to college daily they might be delay to go home after their syllabus. So now it shows a fingers on security also might involved by taking money from the gang . Any how after searching the culprits ultimately request the judge to hang them.

These are the karmas of 5 years of BJP administration. Police department acted on behalf of right wing group and the then BJP administration for last 5 years. Last 5 years rightwing group have taken the law in their own hands and police department was puppet of these groups and BJP workers especially in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. Last 5 years how many incidents happened frequently chain snatching, thieves sometimes posing as a police man and looting the gold jewelers from the women in the daylight and another incident Rickshaw driver called the looters and looted the gold from the family from Bangalore who arrived to Mangalore in the morning 4 AM and morning mist incident so all these things shows that our Mangalore and Udupi district Police Department are so weak . Did Police department have taken any action against such incidents?. In the last 5 years Police was busy in catching the cows only. Couple of years ago our Mangalore and Udupi districts was the best districts in the India but now it is very difficult to survive here. We need to catch these rapists as soon as possible and punish them severely. If Mr. Nalin Kumar puts such deadlines from last 5 years we could not see such types of incidents now. Where he was from last 5 years just now he wake up after change of govt. ? Why Nalin Kumar did not put any deadline while Ujire rape and murder?.

One of my known contact in a social network site got really touchy with regard to the news item about the Church attack cases being reopened. He went on to blabber about the elected MLA and Home Minister showing interest in his own community affairs because our honorable Home Minister is Christian and elected MLA is a Christian. Same thing is happening here in this rape case also? Looks like, propaganda is being created by the vested interests to malign the clean image and popularity of local MLA so that they can try to malign his name. Where were Mr. Nalin Kumar and Mr. Bhat during the Soujanya Murder Case? Who is stopping them pres the home minister to reopen this case and press for COD probe on this? Who are these guys to give an ultimatum to the Police? Does Police needs to take orders from these communal Netas? Mr. Pratap Reddy, IGP, just don’t take any orders from these people and don’t even entertain these guys again to question what your department is doing to nab the culprits. These anti social elements in Manipal and Udupi are the creations of these people who were in power for the last 5 years. When someone is trying to give an honest administration, it hurts these guys and they create these kind of anti social elements like Rape, drugs, Murders and attacking the minority sentiments. To my eyes, this is sheer dirty politics. These are the people who created it and when someone trying to bring in a cleaner administration, these anti social elements give birth to these kinds of events like RAPE, DRUGS and some kind of communal issues.

This act is condemnable in strongest of words and the culprits should be brought to book as soon as possible. Even a common man like me would like to see those punished severely. But political ultimatums to police will not work, since it is not shortlisting any candidates from among those who applied for a job. Why Mr. Kateel did not give any deadline to catch the culprits of so many crimes committed during their rule? Therefore, if possible, try and help the police because i think they don't belong to any political party and work independently of any Govt in power please.

Few people started politics here like BJP or Congress is responsible for increase of crime rate in coastal region. But I object those people who blamed BJP Government for each and everything but now support Congress shamelessly for the same matter. It means rape or murder happens in BJP ruled State is more serious than Congress ruled State? Come on friends don’t allow our region to become hell like other Cities in India. Don’t justify the rape and murder cases based on Political Party you support. We don’t want to see another rape or murder case in our region, for that if we have to do something let us do it. The incident affects all and should be condemned by each and everyone, without political overtomne, as it is a menace to all living in and around there.
All assistance should be extended to the investigating authorities where the crime has taken place so that the culprit\s are apprehended in quick time, before they strike again.
If caught, the Govt. should not be lenient towards the culprit\s at all and "STRICTLY" should not allow any political leader of any party to influence the Police and or any other investigating authority.

Rape of a student happened in Manipal is very worst incident. We have to condemn it irrespective of caste & political party.
But, why you people connect each and every incident with Congress???
No rapes happened during BJP rule in Karnataka?
Last year in Gujrat 650 rape cases were registered & outcome was zero, even though your Great Sardar(?) Modi ruling the state.
Nalin kumar got time now from his Hindutwa & party work (mainly welcoming BJP national leaders in the district), because just 1 year to go for MP election. Now they will just wait, this type of thing to happen, so that they can come before media and show off.

Rape is heinous crime & Rapists should be brought in front of public & stoned by public, no matter they belong to Congress, BJP or any other party.

why BJP woke up all of sudden with a deadline to police officers to catch a culprit on 2 days. When happened to church attacks and attacks on nuns these same so called BJP stupid idiots were sleeping without any deadline to police officers to catch the attackers even though all know who attacked not even put them behind bars rather these same so called leaders supported them to attack more with their power and putting behind bars all innocent catholic youths. why now the deadlines,. without your warning to policemen they will complete their task guys congress will not leave a single stone live until they find the rapist. it is very important that put a stop on rapist, communal goondas, pub attackers, pink chuddies, all sene who creates all commnlism everything will stop in very short period of time. BJP we really fed up of your goondgiri. please allow us to live in a peaceful ways. for god sake let the police officers do their job without any warning and let the law order prevail for all citizen in DK. What is disturbing me is how come the various crimes taken place prior to the past one month were not brought to your notice. No doubt you would have taken immediate action and such instances would not have repeated.VERY SAD.

    People,

Best method to solve crime in India is to take finger print / DNA sample of every applicant when giving drivers license and keep it in database like in gulf countries.

When a crime is comitted and if finger print / DNA of accused is traced,,, run this with available database....and you will know identity of the accused within seconds.

Once you know identity of the accused its very easy to hunt them down....

Now civil liberty people, KS Vedike people might not like this ideal....

Current method of Police investigation is to catch a bad charectered auto driver who committed similar crime and beat him up....it wont take investigation in right path all the time...

As we have seen in the past rape cases, this hue and cry too will also die down in a few days until a new case is reported. Police will trace down the culprits, court case will go on and on until the victim is made weak by the lawyers and ultimately the culprits will either set free or may undergo punishment for a few years in jail and back to business as usual. This is the reality we have been witnessing. Our legal system is so weak and time consuming, criminals always find an upper hand and the victims are only victimized.

In fact she did not engage rickshaw, but she was just walking towards her flat which is nearby. It was those monsters who took rikshaw near her and pulled her inside rikshaw abruptly. That is why she could not shout nor run away. This shows, they had done the same crime before, but the victims did not complain to police.

I don't think it is a very tough task for police to catch rapists because police have got very important clue without any effort. That is rapists are auto drivers ! If they take special interest, they can catch within 48 hours. Bangalore CCB police have cracked so many mysterious cases. In one case, they went to remote place in Bihar and caught terrorist without Bihar Police notice (they had to do because it was very sensitive case).
Take example of our own Encounter specialist Mr.Dayanayak who shot D gang notorious member Khalia in the open mumbai bus stand.Intersting part is that Mumbai police dept never had Khalia's photo or address in their record book.Daya Nayak's wonderful investigation revealed that Khalia was responsible for more than 30 murders. How he traced Khalia ? That is through very professional police investigation. Manipal police need not do that much investigation what Daya Nayak did. They have to take interest. That is what important here.

But I think now I need to apologize them and take back my words. Last hope!! Police will catch the culprits and they will be punished harshly. Certainly it was not Congis. You require to rejuvenate your memory power which is damaged due to Karnataka poll results. Old habits die hard. Certainly Congress govt. will be able to catch the rapists belonging to uncultured group of protectors of culture. Now, their God Fathers can not come to save them.
