Udupi, Jun 23: “Even if education is a fundamental right, it is restricted only to primary and high school. For a country to progress in a greater way, people living in rural areas should come to the main stream. In this regard, higher education should be received by rural people as a fundamental right,” said Professor Dr H S Ballal, vice chancellor of Manipal University.

He addressed the gathering at the statue unveiling ceremony of late Muddu Shetty’s statue organized by Vidyavardaka Sangha. The programme was held during the inauguration of science block built at a cost of Rs 50 lac at Hindu PU College, on Friday June 21.

“India is a country with large number of youth and around 70% of them live in rural areas. Amongst them only few people move to urban areas and take up higher education. For the overall development of the nation, it is necessary that higher education is provided in rural areas. Overall, a person should consider values to be important rather than giving importance to money,” he added.

The science block was inaugurated by Nitte University vice chancellor Professor Shantaram Shetty. Chief guest S S Shinda, deputy director of PU education said Udupi district ranks first in PUC results but when it comes to individual ranking, there are lagging behind and urged students to achieve this in future days.

The programme was presided over by Nitte University chancellor, Shirva Vidyavardaka Sangha president N Vinay Hegde. In his address, he said “Only through god’s blessings, one can come up in life, but we should do our duty.”

Today, spiritual thinking is lacking among students. Students will excel only when their mother is happy at home, adding he asked parents to encourage their children in those areas in which they are interested.

Retired lecturer Bala Subramanya welcomed the gathering while principal K Rajagopal proposed vote of thanks.

V Subayya Hegde, association secretary, administrator Professor Y Bhaskar Shetty, principal K Rajgopal, Mattaru Ratnakar Hegde among others were present.
