Mangalore: Death of pregnant wife - Husband gets 8 years in jail

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jun 29: The third additional district and sessions court here has sentenced a person to eight years of rigorous imprisonment, and imposed a fine of Rs 60,000. The court found Rajesh alias Rajkumar from Koltige village in the taluk, guilty of causing the death of his pregnant wife by inflicting mental harassment.

Reshma, wife of Rajesh, who was pregnant, had committed suicide on August 1, 2011, unable to stand the incessant harassment meted out to her by Rajesh, and his mother, Pushpavathi. She had many a time told her parents and siblings about the horrible time she was going through at her husband’s home in the hands of her husband and mother-in-law. It is said that the two brought immense pressure on Reshma to the extent that she had no other alternative but to end her life.

Upon her death, Reshma’s brother, Naveen Shetty Vittal, filed a complaint in Vittal police station, seeking stern action against the culprits. The police, after holding investigations, had filed charge sheet against Rajesh and Pushpavathi. The court, observing that Rajesh has been found guilty of mentally harassing his wife, sentenced him. Pushpavathi has been exonerated of the charges, after finding that charges against her were not conclusively proved.

Rajesh was given three years imprisonment and fine of Rs 10,000 for crimes falling under section 498 (a) of Indian Penal Code, and  five years sentence and fine of Rs 50,000 under section 306. The entire amount of Rs 60,000 has been ordered to be paid to the mother of the deceased lady. The judgment was pronounced by presiding officer of the court, P N Desai.

Public prosecutor, K Shivaprasad Alva, had appeared in the court on behalf of the prosecution.

First the Judgement comes after 2yrs!
Two, a person is dead along with her child, and 60000 to the family of the girl, for what? Meaning are those two lives worth just 60000?
Three what will anyone gain with hanging the culprit, put him in jail or whatever! The women wont return, the baby which didnt even get a chance to see this world, wont come back again!
I dont know how people term this Justice, when I dont know how it has served justice to anyone?

If the parents and brother of girl truly loved her they would not let her go back to her husband as she was facing problems. Here I feel this brother is a greedy. Now he got 60000 rupees blood money. Do u think he will be happy with this. He could have saved his sisters life. He gave complaint for what? His sister will not come back.

    hi,
Good morning to G.C . DOUZA // n all readers of D World..

Hw r u ? Hope fine n good in health too by GOD grace
    .
This is regarding ur comment .

No i am not a judge . But would like to say as life imprisonment is not worth for harresing .
I do understand that two lives r gone as that lady was pregrent .action should b taken n action has/also been taken by punishing that culprit but it was too late .

As wen that lady as mention in this news narreted her troubles to her sibling .during that time why brother or mother not went to police n complained ? Why her sibling kept quite ?
If taken action b4 atleast this lady s life would b saved n a new life baby girls/ boy would com on earth n may b later life would bring happiness .
But neither sibling bothered nor her husband .

as far as her brother would aleast involve in matter to find out wt exact reason for harresment that he did / or not GOD knws dear .but for person haressment can b complained to cops n nw a days der r women welfare associations also can tell them ,as they wil involve in matter n as per suitation wil giv counceling to husband n son both .may b they would understand .but if stil nt then involve cops in this matter .

So my dear friend for haressment life imprisonment is no remedy der .so its beter we wen com to knw our siblings /our relative should invole in this matter to solve problems rather giving life imprisonment n rather waiting too see as two lives r gone as mother n child .

My friend i hv not wrote this article to hurt any one but this wt i think action should b as b4 n nw her brother complain to cops .
Any way der newer a late its says old proverb .
    GOD bless u all .
May her SOUL n babys SOUL rest in rest n may GOD bless n tak care of these two precious lives that onces GOD created .

How shameless people still linger in our socities .... A baby ultimately brings joy and happiness to the family but in this case, both the son and the mother duo have killed the joy as well as happiness. How many cases as such are happening in villages and other places!! This case became known to the people because of the woman's suicide.. Harassment in not less than any murder or rape. People who are held in custody for harassment must be given lifetime imprisonment ! . This case must be taken seriously by the authorities.
