Mangalore: Police waiting for victim's statement on Manipal rape case - Rosakutty

Mangalore, Jun 29: Chairperson of Kerala Women's Commission K C Rosakutty on Saturday June 29 said that the accused arrested in the Manipal gang-rape case had given a clear picture of the incident to the police and that the police were waiting for the victim's statement.
Speaking to reporters after her meeting with IGP (western range) on Saturday evening, Rosakutty said that the IGP had brought her up to date with the case. "The IGP said that during interrogation the accused had given a clear picture of what took place on the night of the incident, but they are waiting for the victim's statement," he said.
"At present, the victim is not in a condition to answer the police or speak to us (Women's Commission team). Her parents are also reluctant to meet us as they are going through mental trauma and agony. They are not in a position to answer our questions but have collected our phone numbers and will speak to us over the phone," she said.
"We are an authorised body and we will look into this matter very seriously. Ever since the incident was first reported, we have been following up closely and are in constant touch with the superintendent of police (SP) and the doctors to know the latest developments.
"The chief minister of Kerala too has spoken directly with the vice-chancellor of Manipal University on the issue. The report of our findings will be submitted to the Kerala government on July 2," she informed.
On the police investigation she said, "The police have been successful in tracing the accused. The victim will surely get justice soon."
Asked whether security lapse was to be blamed for the incident, Rosakutty said, "Yes, there was a security lapse but the management of the University have told us that there is enough security for students in the campus and the appropriate measures have been taken to ensure their safety."
Advocate Rubina Rashid and Dr Tulasi were present. The team had visted Manipal Hospital earlier in the day, but could not meet the victim or her family as they were reluctant to do so.

Udupi, Jun 29: More than a week after a student of Manipal University from Kerala was allegedly gang-raped by three men, K C Rosakutty, chief of Women's Commission, Kerala, visited the victim at Manipal hospital on Saturday June 29.
She was accompanied by advocate Rubina Rashid and Dr Tulasi.
However, the victim and her family were reluctant to meet the team from Kerala.
Speaking to reporters, Kutty said that she could not meet the victim and her family as they were unwilling, but the doctors said that the girl would be discharged in three days. "The father of the girl has promised to call this evening at around 5 pm to discuss the matter," she added.
"As chairperson of the Kerala Women's Commission, I will do everything within my power to give justice to the victim. I can comment further on this only after a meeting with the IGP and after talking to the girl's father in the evening," she said.
"I will submit a report on my findings to the Kerala CM, who will then decide on further steps," she added.
Soon after visiting the hospital, she and her team left for Mangalore to meet IGP Pratap Reddy, sources said.
The girl was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped by three men in an auto rickshaw on the night of Thursday June 20. After almost a week of persistent hunting, the police arrested three accused, of whom two attempted suicide and are in hospital. Another accused, Hariprasad, has been sent to five-day police custody.
