• There is no point in arriving at dishonourable agreements
• The proxy war is likely to go on

Manipal, Jan 17: Former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir K.V. Krishna Rao, who was also former Chief of Army Staff, said on Monday that it is necessary for India to be superior to its neighbours in the field of conventional warfare, nuclear capabilities and in economic sphere, to tackle the problem in Jammu and Kashmir.
 
Delivering a talk on "Jammu and Kashmir - Past, Present and Future", organised by the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) here, Mr. Rao said as regards the future of Kashmir, the long-term intentions of India's adversaries should be taken into consideration. Pakistan does not want a strong country such as India as its neighbour. It cannot trust India after it lost East Pakistan in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. Pakistan likes to see a fragmented India.
 
The present situation, where a proxy war is going on in Jammu and Kashmir, is likely to go on till Pakistan realises that it cannot match India even when it comes to nuclear warfare. Even China is threatened by the growth of India. It is using Pakistan to curb India. India has to assert itself.
 
"There is no point in arriving at dishonourable agreements with our neighbours. Pakistan and China will remain adversaries of India for a long time to come. India will emerge a major power, if not a superpower, in the next 10-15 years," he said.
