Udupi, Jun 30: The splendour of rural sports came alive at Alevoor here on Sunday June 30 as hundreds gathered to test their athletic skills in 'Kesardu Onji Dina', organized by Alevoor Sri Ganeshotsava committee.

Inaugurating the event, urban development minister and district incharge Vinay Kumar Sorake said, "Today people go to spas for naturopathy treatments, but earlier, people worked in fields and were close to nature, and did not need any naturopathy treament."

"Kambala is a heritage sport and holds a place of pride among farmers. Those who run on Kambala track are as fast Olympic runners. As minister, I will give importance to the development of rural sports too," he added.

Sports like slush track race, sack race and tug-of-war saw enthusiastic participation from children and adults alike.

More than 600 people of the vicinity took part in these sports. College students from Mulky and Katpady also took part.

Alevoor Sri Ganeshotsava committee president Suresh, Lions Club former governor Jayakumar Shetty, Shankar Poojary Kalmady, Shankar Poojary, Umesh G Shetty, Ashok Bhandary, Raghava Poojary, Dinesh Bangera, Sudhakar Shetty and others were present.

People who attended the event also relished Tulu Nadu dishes like 'ganji chatni'.
