Bhatkal: Gang posing as handicapped beggars exposed

Bhatkal: Gang posing as handicapped beggars exposed

Yahya Hallare
Daijiworld Media Network – Bhatkal (SP)

Bhatkal, Jul 1: We have been coming across instances of fleecing gullible people in the name of securing employment abroad, doubling money, announcement about winning lottery etc. The latest in the line of these kinds of frauds is a gang of fit persons from Uttar Pradesh (UP) posing as handicapped destitutes, and seeking alms from the people.

One such gang with six members, four men and two women, came to the fore in the town recently.  The members of this gang would fan out to different localities, do their best to elicit sympathy from the gullible public with deliberately displaying cramped postures or limps.

The tricks of the gang’s trade came to light, after someone found the movement of one of the gang’s members doubtful. When the general public tried to catch hold of the youth, he began running away, giving up his foolhardy limp and fake handicap. The person, who had dressed up as and was behaving like a Muslim, when chased, caught, and questioned, gave his name as Mukesh (22).

Mukesh also revealed that all the six members of his gang were non-Muslims, but had taken on the role of Muslim beggars to attact the sympathies of Bhatkal Muslims. He said he and his friends are from Uttar Pradesh, presently living in Murdeshwar, from where they go out to different places every day.

The locals feel cheated and disturbed at the fact that their generosity has been taken for a ride by the cheaters. They recollect a similar incident in which a person posing as handicapped beggar was caught sometime back and handed over to the police. They say they have not heard anything about any action having been taken against that man thereafter.

The names of the gang members have been given as Roshni, Ajay, Sathish, Reshma, and Mothi. Mukesh was found to be in possession of Rs 2,000, which he seems to have received as alms from large-hearted people who apparently took pity on a handicapped beggar who looked like being from a far-off place, seeking their help. The people now guess that there may be more such gangs in operation elsewhere too, and that apart from begging, the members of these gangs, who might make note of the weak security spots during their begging trips, indulge in theft and such other acts at night.

Not only that, they kidnap and mime children too. My friend was kidnapped when we were playing as kids in Umerkhadi Bombay and they removed her eyes and she was made to beg. After 5 years we found her begging at Mahim station. she recognised her Mother's voice when we were going to Mahim Church and came running to her. But till date the gang who kidnapped her has not been caught though it is 38 years since that incident.

This beggers Story is not new.In India People are showing lot of sympathy to beggers.this willbe misused from many who think it is aeasy way of earning Money without hard work.In Europe Germany also nowadays this trend has started.People from Rumänien (A poor Country)come here in Groups,.they are brought from a Agent, roomed in a cheap room, given some Food (Notwhat they want) nextday they are brought in a car, spread over a street, and evening they collected.and next week in adifferent road.and the Money they get cant Keep self.Have to give to the Person who brings.there will be a Person who checks them all the time .when they are begging, their legs are bandaged, folding back.evening they can walk.they collect all handicaped persons promising them lot of Money.but realitaet is just opposit.children under 13years Train them to robbery .Here children under 13years cant be punished or kept in jail.taking Personalien left out.and the process Begins from beginn.now they found out their tricks .so People are very careful.

    Jeeven,
First read the newsreport and then comment. If you don't understand, read until you understand. Don't give unrelated childish comments. You are wasting not only your time but also the time of hundreds of DW readers. I think you misunderstand the meaning of "disagree" to agree and that's reason you always love to write nonsense. This is a public forum and not your FB page. So pleaaaase give sensible comments.

    ========

Although these “beggars” are fully fit to work, they have made begging as their profession. One can imagine if they have to migrate all the way from UP to Bhatkal, then the "income" they get must be really good. I remember an incident which appeared in newspaper, where a Bangladeshi citizen came to India and started to beg. Every now and then he used to go back to his country. Once when he was caught by Bangladeshi police, he revealed that he earned more than 75 lakh Rupees (or Takas) just from begging in India. He also added that Indians are very generous in giving alms. There are many cases where beggars have left a huge amount of money when they died. It's easy come, easy go.

And they give commission on daily basis to those who give babies to them..Sometimes,these gangs target poor women in hospitals and kidnap new born baby..Beggars should be severely punished..

Nowadays we have seen begging becomes a trend because it is a kind of lucrative business without any investment or any risk a easy money without any hard work too.People begging with their change of identity or religion should considered as criminals, their place should be inside the jail with a kind of hard job for a certain period .

For time being my concern is little bit different than many others in regards to this incident..
As they begging by pretending as muslims, what if they try to create communal tension between the religions by doing some wrong deeds???what if they pelt stones at either temples or churches as muslims are doing it? or molest a girl belongs to hindu's or christians?? who will be held responsible for aftermath developments?
Isn't it a serious matter to be considered?
So there should be serious enquiery on these boys n their hidden intensions..

    Dear RN,

I believe that these people have done wrong and by giving them alms we are encouraging ungodly things like robbery, laziness etc. But, keeping your well being in mind
Please don't misquote anything from the bible or don't add your own things into the bible even if its a well meaning advice. Bible the Living Word proceeding from Gods mouth. There is a strict judgement for those who add or remove to Gods word. Therefore repent and you shall receive forgiveness. You can give good advice to anyone and its welcome but don't dare to add or remove anything from the word of God. Its very dangerous.

Observation or follow of “Zakat” is one of the five fundamental duties of a devoted Muslim as per their religion. Zakat itself says being a Muslim they have to donate some portion of their income to eradicate inequality and poverty. So, if you have Donors means we have receivers too. But now misusing the system means we have to call the receivers as beggars. We can see the crowded beggars in front of almost all Restaurants in Mohd Ali Jinnah road in JJ Circle at Mumbai. Just for curiosity I had asked one such Restaurant why they distributing free food to those beggars and then I got to know that few Muslim Donors pay some fixed charges to distribute the food to beggars just to observe “Zakat” So, when beggars get free food then why should they work hard for living?

During my last repat, I was taking a walk in front of RTO around 7.00 pm, and I came across a guy, appears to in his early 30s and seeing me, he raised his voice and said - Allah ke naam se kuch dede, bhooka hoo....-. Hearing him, I asked him 'you look quite hale and healthy, why you want to beg. If you need work, come, I have some work in yard'. You know what was his reply. Saab, aap mujhe full day kaam karoonga tho kya doge, 400, 500 rupees, with my this begging tactics, I earn not less than Rs. 1000 from morning to afternoon. Why should I go for a hard labour. I was stunned to hear his reply and asked him to get lost.

So, if someone is habitual of begging, he would never venture to look for a job. So, we should be choosy and only genuine and needy people should be helped.
