Beltangady: Police intervention stops minor’s marriage at last minute

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, Jul 2: The arranged marriage of a minor girl at Dharmasthala in the taluk was stopped at the last minute, with the intervention of the police.

The marriage of Ranga Shetty (26) from Doddamathighatta in Channarayanapatna taluk, Hassan district, was scheduled to be held with a 17-year-old girl from Nuggehalli in the same taluk at a private marriage hall in Dharmasthala on Monday July 1. The bride happened to be the daughter of Ranga Shetty’s elder sister.

Although Beltangady police, tahsildar of the taluk, and officials of child welfare department got information about the plan to conduct this illegal marriage on Sunday, they had no information about where the marriage party was put up. Hence, the policemen led by Beltangady sub-inspector, Yogeesh Kumar, visited the marriage hall early morning on Monday, and told the people concerned that the marriage will get annulled and criminal cases would be registered against the family members, if they went ahead with conducting marriage rituals.

Reportedly, the would-be bride was averse to her marriage at such a young age, but her family members had forced her to bow to their wishes and get married.

The families concerned agreed to cancel the marriage function. They were brought to the police station, where they were made to execute an affidavit.

@ vinod , mangalore. yes of course. but that does not mean she has to enter motherhood upright. it can delay untill her basic education. thus she will become immune to campus or unwanted relationships which can spoil families repute. starting family early in her life makes her better organised subtlle personality. its a hyppocracy that we does not mind our children night outs or weekend dates but denounce early marriage upright without the single thought.

The body might be ready, but is the mind ready for it?
I have simple questions, assuming you have a daughter, would you marry her off at 12?
Will you want your little daughter to be having a child at 13?

This Ranga Shetti family belongs to Kumbara ( Kulala )caste of Hassan District and in this Potters' Community in old Mysore area the marriage of minor girls is quite common. Only because they came to Dharmasthala this matter came to the notice of Police.

Marriage of minor Girl is not only illegal but also not good from the point of view of health of the Girl and also baby born to minor girls will inherit some mental handicaps too.
But comparing with what is happening to Minor girls in Pakistan, the marriage of Minors in India is not such a gory offence. Yesterday in Gilgit area of Pakistan just because two 16 year old girls danced in the first shower of rain in front of their house, both these poor girls were shot dead by fundamentalists.

A woman is not physically ready to begin bearing children until she is about 20 years of age. Babies born to women younger than 20 are more likely to give birth premature and they are under weight at birth. The birth itself is likely to be more difficult and the babies born to such mothers are likely to die in the first year of life.
It has been proved to cause genetic issues with children born of parents who are closely related.

roshan braganza, mumbai, girls get easy lured into relationships as they get matured early compared to guys..
But that does not mean they are ready to start a family.
Atleast with the education we have we should have better plans for the new generation.
We all know the consequences of early relationships.
Getting girls married early almost ends the possible career the girl could have. Isnt it?
She could study, get a job, start an industry, so many things a daughter could do..
She could be the care taker of the family.. She c
So its definitely not a wise decision to marry off much early once because she attains puberty early.
In todays age somebody supporting child marriage is like going back in time..

Marriage is all about a relationship between a man and a woman. Now it all depends where you are in your relationship and your readiness to accept some kind of extra responsibility other than your normal one in your life.Looking at the direction of our younger generation and their activities my point of view is that the marriage age at 16 not bad even.

@ lydia lobo ,kadri. norms and culture are there for a reason , long ago our grannies married early but still had healthy children also lived a hundred years. why should be things different now , so called medical complications can arise irrespective of age. its strange that despite stray relationships and teen prenancies in increasing , v just bark strange when child marriages happen. if girls wants have a early relationship its her right , period

    Mr. Braganza,

I avoid replying you because mine and your viewpoints on this issue remain polarized. Foremost, your assumption of me to be a feminist is incorrect because I never asked anytime to castigate men, I always maintained balance between both genders but naturally I opposed torture of women.

However, I always found a beast in your comments, a sex starved beast grabbing every chance to marry a teenager while he being at his sixties because the law permits it. This goes against my principles therefore, this is the last time I reply your post.

However, I must bring this to your knowledge that when our grannies were married at a young age, they were never let to sleep with their spouse for 4-5 years. My eldest sister, who was married off at 18 to a farmer-family, too was subjected to this treatment. To bear healthy babies in a large numbers in those years, their diet comprised of home grown grains, hunted meats, milk and such foods that were abundant at that time. Today half a liter milk is made to last for whole day - imagine the nutritional value of our generation. Period !

    I like this duet.

Both are at end of spectrum.

I think if age of marriage for girl is reduced to 16 then boy should be not be more than 5 years elder to her.

I am totally against 18 year old girls marrying 60 years old men even if its purely legal,,, which leads to other issues later on.

I think ages difference between husband and wife should never be more than 5-10 years.

    Jai Hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I want to put this point forward to those who think marriage at 16 is correct.

Human body does not get fully developed even at puberty, it takes upto 20-21 years to fully grow. If a girl is subjected to marriage related relationship before her body is fully grown, chances are more that the woman (as well as the baby) dies due to anemic related ailments or the child birth happens premature.

Someone pointed out about rape, the other about eloping (love marriage). These things can happen even after a girl is married but for this only girl cannot be blamed. She is not raped by animals nor does she run away with animals. Granted parents rear daughters and marry them off out of responsibility but do they rear sons to rape women and steal others' daughters ?

Please understand that a woman's existence is equally important as that of a man, otherwise, there is no marriage, no children no future generations.

People always point out what is happening in other community.
They never talk anything of the same things happening rampantly in their own community. There are so many under age marriages happening.
I always read here some one always saying : when you point a finger at someone, four other fingers of the same hand are pointed at you...!!!!

without hurting anyones emotions / ego i want to raise a question. i have been seeing so many marriages of minors happening regularly of a particular religion/ community where all these officials do not interfere. not even when the minor mother delivers year after year. WHY this differential treatment.

Sg..in INDIA if a religion permits to kill a person nobody will ask, even the Govt(our neighbouring countries already legalised thru laws!!)..we are very secular i say..we will not interfere in religious matters even if it over takes law of land, hence it is easy to get away with law in the pretext of religion..

agenda of increasing age of marriage is a feminist concept , quiet against it, govt kept age of consent at 15 for married girls ( criminal procedure code 2013)。 i think its wise decission. there are numerous cases of minor girls got permission from court upon consent. in my opinion if girl above 12 consents for marital relationship she should be allowed to do so.

once the child marriage happens its valid , laws are there only to prohibit. they should have had ceremony in exile and later had function. once marriage certificate issued nobody can annul marriage except girl herself. even if the offence is non bailable courts can issue bail on surity of bond.

I think underage marriage law should be bestowed with Bride rather than law enforcing authority. Bride should decide whether she is ready to marry someone before attaining legal marriage age. We can recall the issuance of controversial note in Kerala State to reduce the marriage age to 16 for Muslims girls but later it was withheld due to wide spread protest. The question is our Government is ready to reduce the marriage age to 16 to please one such community but at the same time they will rush to punish the others

THERE ARE SO MANY MARRIAGES ARE HAPPENING DAILY UNKNOWINGLY WITHOUT POLICE INFORMATION.

GOVT MUST PROVIDE NEW LAW FOR MARRIAGE. POLICE MUST GIVE CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE FOR MARRIAGE. THEN ONLY MARRIAGE SHOULD HAPPEN.

HOPE WE CAN SAVE SO MANY LIVES IN FUTURE. JAI HO.
