Manipal gang-rape accused remanded in judicial custody, to be shifted to Shimoga

Udupi, Jul 3: Hariprasad, one of the three accused in the Manipal gang-rape case, was on Wednesday July 3 produced in the chief judicial magistrate court, after his five-day police custody ended.
Principal civil judge Nagajyothi, who heard the case, remanded him in judicial custody till July 15.
However, he will be sent to Shimoga for security reasons. Yogish is yet to be discharged from hospital.
Police sources said that there is fear about public attacking Harisprasad, and hence his life was in danger. The court thus ordered that he be shifted outside Udupi and taken to Shimoga where he would be safe.
Balachandra and Harindra, brothers of Yogish and Hariprasad who were arrested on Tuesday July 2 for destroying evidence, were also produced in the court along with Hariprasad. They too were remanded in judicial custody till July 15, but unlike him, will be kept at Hiriadka itself.
Balachandra and Harindra have been booked under IPC section 201, and an advocate said that if proved guilty, they may be sentenced to minimum seven years and maximum 10 years in jail.
A student of Manipal University was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped by three men in an autorickshaw on June 20 night. After almost a week, the police arrested Yogish, Hariprasad and Anand on June 27, in a day that saw dramatic turn of events as Yogish and Anand attempted suicide. Anand was discharged from hospital and remanded in five-day police custody, while Yogish is yet to be out from hospital. The girl, who had initially refused to cooperate, has relented to give her statement, but on condition of confidentiality. The incident has stirred much public anger and police fear that the accused may be assaulted.
