Udupi: John Martis (36) from Malpe killed in Afghanistan blast

Udupi: John Martis (36) from Malpe killed in Afghanistan blast

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jul 4: John Vikram Martis (36) from Malpe Bailakere near here became a victim of an incident in which a bomb went off on Tuesday July 2 at Afghanistan.

Martis, an employee of United Nations Organization, had been deputed to Afghanistan to work as an accountant for North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces deployed in Afghanistan. He had been working in that country since the last four years.

Martis was to leave to Dubai for employment on June 28. However, he had to cancel his trip after a bomb blast incident at the airport there on June 27. He revised his plan and planned to leave for Dubai on July 4, but lost his life on Tuesday July 2 in an unfortunate incident.

Martis always worked inside the office and therefore his family members thought the risk is minimum, unlike the forces which constantly is required to go out and face tough situations. On Tuesday, bomb blast occurred inside the NATO office. Martis, who was critically injured, breathed his last.

Martis was unmarried. He is survived by his mother and two brothers. He belonged to Thottam parish.

Two of Martis’ brothers have left for Afghanistan. They are expected to return with the body of Martis within four or five days.

I work inside Kabul airbase, not outside. By the grace of God, I am most fortunate. I did not know you personally John. But my heart aches for your parents, and your siblings. I hope God gives them the peace and courage to understand God's love and God's wish. Everything in the world, even a blade of grass moves only with his command. God has a reason for everything, even though as human beings, we cry and question why he let this happen.

Can people have decency and stop talking random things here please! What benefit is it to talk about the world's problems - Crab mentality, Mangaloreans not helping, wife/sister/mother problems etc! A person has died. Show some respect.

Also stop bitching about working in Afghanistan for better package. At least they tried. What are you doing? Sitting on daijiworld and bitching. Do not condemn or talk bad about others because of jealousy and thinking "serves him right for doing the dangerous thing".

We are no different from anyone else anywhere. Are there are no deaths of Mangaloreans in Kuwait, Saudi, Dubai, Sharjah, Bahrain etc from traffic accidents, falling from construction building etc? Death happens. Anywhere. It’s God's wish.

There are more than 5 lakh Europeans and Asians in Afghanistan. Everyone is working for better of this country. Not everyone is getting killed. This was a security problem which could not have been prevented. Do you think there is no murder, robbery, bike accident deaths etc happening in Mangalore? If you sit and always think of protecting yourself, you cannot even move out of our house. And even inside the house accidents can happen.

Please STOP judging people who are working hard for benefit of their family. Pray for our dear brother's soul and pray for our protection too. If he was a soldier and was sent to Kashmir, would you say the same thing? Work is work. Life is life. You have to go where it takes you. And this was our dear brother's destiny. I celebrate his life and character.

May his Soul Rest in Peace. Afghanistan is a still a dangerous place,I myself have worked for 3 years in afgahanistan.People who work there know the pain & hardship they face each day.Life here is not easy even in the military bases. You have to work 7 days a week 12 hours a day. Some places still get attacked. Many mangalorean youth are employed here. The pay is attractive.Only thing I can say for the people out there, once you have made decent money please try for someother job.Jobs in the gulf don't pay as much, but still you have peace of mind & remember money is not everything in life.

Sad demise bro.. very unfortunate one. May God almighty grant you eternal rest.
YES we too work in Afghan and share the same pain and uncertainity.some have commented that we are here for the"good package" and "dont care of our lives and family" ect. but, understand that no one wants to live in the shadow of death 24*7 just for money.we and our family members know the worth of our sacrifise. we cannot leave this job as you say, becoz behind us we have our parents, sisters, brothes, wives, childern and their future. YES.., we do have relatives and others in safer countries with better positions.but Mr. John D'silva and Mr.Praveen Alva clearly told the truth.we are taking this pain for our families so they would have something better. Its easy to comment from far away but being in the situation does matter..
Dear brother Jhon Vikram we respect your sacrifice towards your family and we respect you as a soldier who made his ultimate sacrifice in the war.Rest in Peace bro...

Our truthful condolences to the bereaved Maartis family members. We assure our Heavenly prayers. Let us not forget that we are from one Eternal God and we are to God a day.

Through death God our only beloved Savior takes us to eternal life. When we are in this world, God wants us to love each other and all the things which He created. We should work sincerely and lead a good life through which we can prepare ourselves for our own death and thus we follow in the path of Jesus Christ who died for our sins.

Have mercy on young John Martis's departed soul O Lord and grant him Eternal Peace, AMEN.

May his soul rest in peace. We mangallorean christians employed all over the world but we hardly try to help our own community for an employment. We knew people struggle in India because of very less savings. Many of us have ample opportunities to help others, but we remain reluctant. We enjoy all pleasures of better employment. It is known fact that employment in Afghanistan put lot of risk because it is a war torn nation.Stability, security may take quite long time.We have to learn a lesson from Keralites how they are united to lift their community up.I am ashamed to say we still inherit crab mentality. We celebrate Sunday mass as an obligation not as one family.Let our beloved priests emphasize this subject during homily. We have to reform our own community.I salute departed brother for the sacrifice he made for his family.

Yes, Crab Mentality is mostly to be blamed to all ladies in the family. They as Mom/Wifes/Sisters dont want their sons/husbands/brothers to help others in in any form may it be financially or in kind such as visa or accommodation. This is the fact of life which many Mangaloreans have to live with for their entire life as expats.

A very unfortunate incident happened to our fellow originated from Coastal region. May God rest his soul in peace and give strength to his family members to bear the losses too. Dear Friends, there are few Countries are extremely dangerous to visit or work in this part of World and Afghanistan is one of those Countries. You may get exorbitant package to work in this Country but pls think twice before you sign the employment agreement. Money can’t bring happiness always in our life though money is necessary but not must in our life
