Moodbidri: Theft at Basadi - Police release sketch of suspect

Daijiworld Media Network – Moodbidri (SP)

Moodbidri, Jul 8: City police commissioner, Manish Kharbikar, on Sunday July 7, released a sketch of the suspected thief who took away several idols worth crores of rupees from Siddhant Darshan Mandir of Gurugala Basadi here on Friday July 5 night.

The sketch has been prepared on the basis of the accounts provided by some people who had seen the suspect loitering around Jain Pete area of the town two days back under suspicious circumstances, and the footage of the closed circuit television cameras fitted inside the Basadi.

The sketch was released at the police station here. Five police teams have been formed for cracking the case. The police commissioner has requested the members of the general public to provide information if any they have about persons with features resembling this sketch.

The thief is about 30 years old, is fair-complexioned, and well-built. He conversed in Hindi. The police have learnt that he told some people in Hindi that he wanted to visit Dharmasthala, and was asking for directions to reach there. It is thought that he would have boarded an auto rickshaw in the town to reach Dharmasthala on Saturday morning.

It has now transpired that the siren failed to blare not because of the thief. The security staff of the Basadi forgot to switch the siren to ‘on’ position by marking their thumb impressions. This came in handy for the thief. During police questioning, the security staff claimed that they used to promptly keep the siren in ‘on’ position on other days, but had forgotten to do so only on Friday night.

The fact that gas cylinders, box etc have been left behind by the thief gives an indication that more than one person would have been involved with the theft, although CCTV footages showed only one person. The fact that he correctly cut off a part of the shutter to ensure that sensors are not touched, gives an indication that he knew everything about the Basadi. The thief had reached the window through which he gained entry into the Basadi by jumping the wall of Leppada Basadi. Most people here do not know that one can reach this building in this way. This also gives an indication that the thief was well-versed with the Basadi structure.

It is almost certain that security failure contributed to the success of the theft. Now there is a proposal to keep the idols in the building in bank lockers till fool proof security arrangements are made.

Dear Reshmi Salian, Mangalore, I fully agree with your comments and as mentioned by you all the parties are alike in their functioning as well as ruling. However, me as a member of a particular community and from minority section, I feel Congress has never been a communal party.

Basically there is no difference between both these parties. Both play communal cards, both are filled with corrupt and none of the political parties are interested in India's development. It's like this. Thum bada chor ho tho, mein theray se bada chor. If any party comes to power at Centre, nothing is going to change. We need strong leader and definitely with clean record and full team is interested in leading our nation towards development. But unfortunately, we don't have such visionaries. Even if we have, they are not encouraged to perform.

Dear Flavian, there are two reasons why Politicians or Party Leaders or MLAs’ or MPs’ from our region get involved in crime related cases. First, all our people those who voted for their favorite Leaders expect their support to bring them out from the Jail or on bail even for the petty reason. Secondly, few people those who worked for election canvass, force their Leaders to help them when they are in trouble. If they deny support then they will never get their votes even from their relatives or friends. But now there are third categories Leaders exist in our region too. They will rush with the packet of 50 Thousand or One Lakh Rupees bundle whenever there is a natural calamity or accident but to show sympathy on ed communities only. But only good thing is that there is no Political blood bath in our region except two or three cases in last few decades

Let us put slightly in other way around. I believe all Criminals and Petty Thieves are not related to any Political Parties since no Political Party would like to associate with them. But when BJP was in power, all Criminals and Thieves including few innocents were behind bar due to no intervention from BJP Politicians in Police Department. Whereas when Congress comes to power, along with innocents all Criminals and Thieves are set free as per their election manifesto and even if they caught by Police, local MLA or Corporator or Party Leader will order the Police to release them since they belongs to their community or area. If you don’t believe pls call up Panamboor Police Station and Station Master will justify my statement.

This is only for those who hate BJP and support Corrupt Congress in India

You believe it or not. Theft and crime rate has been increased in recent past ever since Congress came to power. May be it is coincident but it is true too. Rather this is the first time they touched Jain Basadis too. In Bihar they started troubling Buddhist Temples too. Buddha and Bahubali both were devoted their entire life for peace but thieves might have some other thoughts in their mind.

I am watching all bling congi supporters and BJP supporters. There was no point in commenting for each and every comment posted by blind supporters. Tragedy is people have started to link everything to politics. We ourselves are responsible for the mess in society as everytime we blame politicians and we are not bothered about to think about the root cause of all these evils. We take all things for granted. I can blame BJP for these thefts as sitting MLA for Moodbidri is from Congress. But I am not going to do that as this theft is serious situation and sad to see thieves are not even hesitant to try their hand in religious places.
